Answer:
I compared the 3-blade HDX fan without the shroud to this one side-by-side in my garage. The three blade fan without the shroud was noticeably quieter and it put out more airflow. There must be some additional turbulence in the airflow caused by the shroud and/or the blade design. the shroud seems to give it more strength than a wire cage.
the extra blades may help to move more air but also seem to create more noise also.

While I don't recall in the manual it saying so I will be usingj it outdoors. Just use common sense and don't use it in the rain or spray water on it while it is running. It has heavy duty wiring.

Once I assembled the fan and tightened the Tighten Knobs I could not get it to lock in any position. It only stays in the hassock fan mode. Should I have to use pliers or a wrench to tighten the knobs? It does not seem to tighten by hand.

I had the same problem. Yes, you need to get someone with a stronger grip than yours or pliers to tighten which is what I did and it stayed in place after that

There is a slight chance it may be in the store, however more than likley you will have to go to radio shack. I havent opened it but it seems similar to the ones on the Christmas lights.

Rated 3.2 out of 5 by 29 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Can take apart for easy cleaning I purchased this more expensive version of this fan because I could see it would be quick to remove the "shroud" (metal grates) for cleaning. I would have given it 5 stars but this fan at full speed sounds like a 747 airplane and thus is not perfect. I like to use it when I need to circulate a lot of air quickly like when I come home and have had the place at 80 degrees all day (summer) and need to cool it off in a hurry. But I would not use it if I was trying to have a conversation with someone in the same room with it or you couldn't hear them! I also use it in Spring and Fall when I open my windows to bring in the fresh air and circulate it quickly. July 8, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Summer Cool Down Fan ! Compares to old Patton fans and I have one of those too ! A Great Air Circulator for those Hot summer days , Drys Your Sweat ! Cools your house , Garage , Man Cave Test one out at yuor local Home Depot ! July 15, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Just OK I'm just OK on the fan. I needed something FAST (I was sweltering in the garage this past weekend) so I grabbed this one without doing much research ahead of time. It moves a fair amount of air, but not as much as I had hoped it would move. It's pretty badly overpriced for what it is: a dime-a-dozen motor, blades, and a shroud. The bolts that determine the floor angle are impossible to get tight, so it slowly rotates up towards the ceiling over a few hours of runtime. It's not awful, it does move some air... I guess I just expected higher build quality and more air movement for this price. August 26, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by seems to be a good buy. bought this fan because it looked and seemed to be better than the models below it. it is not perfect as the nuts that are supposed to keep the fan at a certain place don't but that was solved with a zip tie from the stand to the grill not a problem. it is a noisy fan even when running on low speed however it does move a lot of air. if one wanted to I guess one could find all kinds of things that are not perfect on this model but for me it does what I want it to do. my only real complaint is the cost of the fan itself never heard of HDX and can not seem to find anything out about them. all in all I am satisfied with this fan as it is doing its job and hopefully will continue for many years due to the cost of it. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Junk I purchased this fan less than two months ago and it died three weeks ago during a thunder storm. All of the other fans are fine and are 4-5 years old. I use the other 20" metal fans, and think that they're far superior to this fan. The output of air is the same or less than a normal 20" metal fan. It's beyond loud even when being used in my barn, drowned out by the big 3, 4' fans and 4, 20" metal fans. Don't waste your money. Buy the normal 20", $45 fans and save yourself the headache from returning it. (and it's deafening noise) May 8, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Amazing Fan Purchase!! I love this fan works perfect for me. It keeps me nice an cool an drowns out noises during the night. January 6, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A great fan for a good price. I was able to put legs on it without any tools or having to read the instruction manual (was the only thing I had to assemble. It works great, what else can say and it came in only 5 days to my house, really fast. October 29, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not Worth the Cost I bought two of these fans for my business. And I use them only in the summer. I got one summer out of one fan and then the brushes went. I got a summer and a half out of the second fan before it quit as well. Cannot recommend these fans for more than one season. September 25, 2014
