They keep items dry in the rain and snow. I store fire making materials, logs, and camping tools and everything stays dry. I have not tried to submerge the tote underwater.

The top breaks down on the top. It eventually splits and leaks. Should make the top so it sheds water. And also sell replacement parts( the top). separately. How can I get three or four replacement tops ASAP?

I have for a quick minute to reach something, but of course you wouldn't want to for an extended time. They are only plastic. They are quite sturdy when used properly ;-)

Of course you can... just like you can stand on eggs, hot coals and your head... but I would not recommend it. Go down to your local home depot and buy a ladder. Or better yet, order it online and they will have it ready for you in a jiffy. Just remember that improper use of any item voids the warranty on them.

Apparently this is not possible. I went tonight to replace the lid that I DID receive when I purchased the bin, which both of the securing tabs had broken off and since the lid has cracked further to the point that it is useless. I was told the lids are not available for individual sale.

Irrelevant question. It is not intended to store food in direct contact with it and it doesn't matter if the food isn't in direct contact with it. You will find a lot of things in life are not suitable for doing things they aren't designed to do.
PS, I hope you never find one made of virgin plastic. That's a terrible waste of resources instead of recycling existing plastic.

It is from recycled polypropylene. This does mean it is not food safe. It is for storage use only and completely safe for that purpose. The reycle code does not indicate which source of the material was used. Generally white or bronze plastics are more likely to be virgin sourced since recycled resins are darker in color. Evenso, unless it says its food safe you can't be sure. Call the manufacturer. Just as an example of what I mean; When reusable recycled shopping bags from major retailers was tested recently, many were found to have lead content above what is considered safe for food. Yet many people have promoted using them as growbags on the internet. Read Less

Polypropylene in and of itself is food safe. That has the recycle stamp of 5 in the triangle I believe. It is used for microwave purpose built containers as well.

Instead of stacking them or putting them on shelves, I have built it so that each tote slides in on two 2x4s. See the attached picture. I've found these totes to be strong enough for my needs. I can easily fill them with 50 or 60 pounds of stuff, and they hold it no problem. I will note that this plastic is more rigid and thus more brittle than the really soft Rubbermaid Roughneck totes. So don't throw things into them or you might crack them. Also, I wouldn't store REALLY heavy stuff in them - such as rocks or steel. Good luck!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In Love w/27 gal. size! I totally love these storage containers, particularly the 27 Gal. size. I started a project over a year ago of getting rid of all cardboard storage in my home & out buildings, so I've tried & tested many different sizes and types of storage containers during this ongoing project. These have become my #1 favorite. I love that they are stackable, and also that I can add padlocks to them and feel comfortable about no one easily getting to files I'd prefer others not have access to. I've even used them to secure jewelry & cameras in when having the unfortunate "family stickyfingers" members over! I also use them to store clothing, tools, and crafting supplies. You can use them for nearly anything!!

In my opinion this is the best size and most versatile bin I've found so far. I love the durability compared to other bins. We use these in a warehouse and that means they are handled fairly roughly by forklifts, delivery team and palletized . Very tough and a nice size that works for most items. Overall i think getting these items through Home Depot and being able to ship free to store was a huge cost savings. I've looked at others places and Home Depot so far is the best price, deal and customer service. Three major pieces to who I choose to buy from.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well for what I need I managed to snag the last one of these bins from the shelves of my local HD and I've used it several times since. It works well in the back of my truck, allowing me to haul water-sensitive items through several rainstorms without any water penetrating inside. The only concern I had initially at purchase of the product was some stress marks in one bottom corner of the plastic - almost like it had been pushed in or stretched excessively and the pigment turned from dark black to shades of grey. However, no cracks or dents have been seen in it yet, and I've loaded it to the top with heavy materials to give it a good stress test. Would definitely purchase again.

I love these storage totes as they are some of the strongest totes I have purchased. The lids are very strong allowing stacking 4 or 5 high with no issues to date. I use black Sharpie if I write on the side of the lid and silver Sharpie if I opt to mark the tote rather than the lid. I have purchased in excess of 30 of these totes in the past 3 years. The only issue I have encountered is, at some point they changed the yellow lid design which does allow them to stack easily if your stacking the old vs new design ( old design the lid grids are square and the newer design the lid grids are diagonal as shown in the picture).
