you can easily choose to not assemble them together letting you make two three foot high shelving units
**you might find that the second unit lacks a plastic cap to insert into the top of the pole (a minor aesthetic result) Read Less

Answer:
No, the corner poles are each one solid pole piece- they are not two halves that screw together, so the height is always the same

Answer:
Yes, it probably could. The 4 support poles screw together to make the taller height. The base of the feet and top might not be "finished," but you could create two shorter units if you wanted two. They would not be symmetrical or identical.

according to the assembly manual, there are 8 separate pole sections ... my educated guess is that the box would be no more than 38 x 18 x 5

I don't know exactly, but here's what I have on mine:
Luggage, tupperware (full of housewares, decorations), cat food bags (large), laundry detergent, toolboxes, appliances.
I consider these things heavy and have not seen any issues at all. Maybe avoid anvils.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good purchase Looks just like the picture. Prompt delivery. Satisifed with the purchase. July 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Utility Shelf This is a sturdy shelf. No frills, but very useful. I have small children, and this is strong enough that it doesn't tip or move when they bump into it or even when my littlest tries to pull himself up using the shelf. It was easy to set up. It looks nice, but not anything I would consider a decoration. We use it to store some of our reptile equipment as you will see in the picture. December 11, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Metal Shelving When we moved into an older home, they lacked cupboard space. my wife coming from Italian background suggested shelving like they use in Europe. She started her search and found the 4 shelf unit. hoping they were of good quality and heavy (said 300 lb shelf ) we couldn't wait to get. The shelves were good quality and fit the bill. We are very European in our kitchen with these quality shelves. December 18, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Price has doubled... I have purchased these shelves a few months ago. They are neat looking and seem durable. Easy to assemble--no tools needed. However, I came back to purchase more and I noticed the price has doubled, so I will look somewhere else to buy. November 9, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent and strong shelving unit A very sturdy shelving unit. It was fast and easy to assemble. The unit is very strong. I purchased four of them as you could not beat the price they were on sale for. I would recommend this and probably get another one, even if not on sale. November 10, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Awful Disappointment I was so excited to receive my unit one because I loved the last one I purchased, but this one I am assuming because of the price was awful. The buckles used to secure the shelves wouldn't close completely; not one (set) of them. I called customer service to see if they would assist me because I thought I was doing something wrong, nope. I turned the unit right-side up (again) and the shelf dropped to the floor and the poles went in four different directions. Praise God my daughter and I knew where to stand and was missed. I asked customer service to send new parts and they had none. And I made the purchase because of such high reviews-wow! I really wished this worked out and I didn't have to return such a heavy item back to the store. August 26, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Second Best Purchase; Unable to find First I have a 5 shelf one just like this that I bought last year for $35. I like it better. It's the same product except not as tall with 5 shelves, that way I have shelves putting the bottom shelf near the floor and the top shelf at the top and everything is off the ground and it is easier to place into my storage shed. So, I recommend this product if you can't find the other for the same price. The adjustable legs are always a needed item. The plastic sleeves that hold the legs in place are somewhat of a pain. If they slip while your sliding shelf into place, you have to start all over again. July 1, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great great bang for the buck! Easy to assemble, sturdy and functional. Admittedly I was a bit concerned about the sturdiness of these shelves given the price, but I was pleasantly surprised when they arrived. I got 2 units for roughly the same price as 1 plastic unit I had seen in a local store. So glad I waited and bought the metal shelves instead of the plastic! These are great for organizing my garage -paint cans, cleaning supplies, tool bags, etc. One very nice factor of these shelves versus others is the shelf height is adjustable to accommodate different items or you can simply omit shelves to store very large items. I set one unit with all the shelves roughly 22" apart and the other unit I set the second shelf a bit higher to allow storage of some larger items on the bottom. One note - get some help setting the first shelf in place -you can do it by yourself but extra hands make it a breeze. All in all an excellent choice for my needs. I would not hesitate to recommend and may well order more in the future. All in all great bang for the buck! October 20, 2015
