Customer Questions & Answers

how do i know what wires are black, white and ground

Asked by: Robert
Called the Richfield HD and got the answer, the middle is connected to the white, the others are interchangeable to put on the red and black connectors.

CAN I USE THIS CORD ON A STOVE

NEED TO KNOW IF THAT WILL WORK
Asked by: bubba
No. A range oven will usually need a beefier cord - I just used a 6/3 cord [6guage /3 wire] to hook up a new induction range. The smaller 10guage is fine for dryers.

Connection instructions confusing

I bought one of these replacement cords and my son literally tore up the instructions to pieces trying to open it, not knowing the instructions were on the back, he connected it and when we turn on dryer it works but smells like smoke, could it be placed wrong? I disconnected the dryer and trying to figure out if its the outlet or the dryer itself, wire isn't burned or anything. Could it because we hadn't used it in like a week?

Ground wire

I am moving into an old house and have a new dryer. The wall outlet is 3 prong but my dryer was a 4. I purchased a 3 prong cord and followed all the steps in replacing the wire. When I plugged it in and turned on the dryer, it immediately heated up and smelled like it was burning. When I asked a professional I was told I need a cord with a ground wire. However, I can only find 4 prong cords with the ground wire. I need a 3 prong. Where may I find one?
Asked by: cw
Thank you for your recent inquiry with The Home Depot. We politely ask that you partner with your local store on where to find a 3 prong dryer cord with ground wire. Even if you have placed the order on our website for the washer and dryer, the appliance department in store is still familiar with such requests pertaining to needed cords. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future. Thank you for shopping Home Depot.

A mechanically-inclined friend changed this cord for me and apparently did a great job; it works just fine. We had to change the cord because the outlet was a three-pronger. We read extensively about it first, and based on the information, thought it would be - while not ideal - the least expensive solution, and at least safe. No complaints, good product, Had this done about a month ago.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from pretty straight forward repair this was pretty much a piece of cake to change, i had a newer 4 pin dryer and needed to change the cord over to a 3 wire to fit the receptacle.. took about 15 minutes and i've had no problems since.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worked Just Fine Worked just fine with our dryer. Based on the amount of laundry we go thru, if the cord was going to fale it would have failed on us! 3-Prong, 3-wire. Already had ring terminals attached to the wire for easy installation. These terminals may have to be removed based on how your dryer accepts the wire hook up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from works as it should Removed old burnt up cord from dryer and easily replaced with this cord. Swapped old recepticle also because that was also arcing to the original plug making it unsafe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most economical way to convert dryer from 4-wire to 3-wire Well made cable, ample length, ring terminals already attached, strain relief included which actually works.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy to install. I thought I would have to hire an electrician to install the 3-Wire Dryer Cord. The salesperson said that you could just unscrew the 4-Wire Dryer Cord and screw in the new 3-Wire Cord. He was correct - it took a screwdriver to complete this job and it worked without hiring an electrician.
