The previous customers have done a nice job of describing how to use the cleat on the adjustable cord. I wanted to add a word of caution based on my recent misuse of the cord. Based on the photos, it appears that my recently purchased set is a bit different and it led me to make a bad assumption about how to use it. Mine has a small red plastic tip bonded to the loose end of the cord that I thought was supposed to hook into the slot on the large end (with the cleats). Turns out this tip is just cosmetic and not bonded strongly at all. When I inserted it into the slot and let go, expecting it to hold under tension, it popped right off and the loose end whipped around with considerable force.
Bottom line: don't rely on the small plastic tip. Cinch the cord into the cleat as explained by the previous answers. You have to pull and stretch the cord to get it to catch into the cleats. Read Less

The little teeth then grip the bungee and keep it from slipping. The key is to pull hard enough to get the bungee into the slot on the end of the red plastic piece. I couldn't get it at first but I just wasn't pulling hard enough. The design is similar to a jam cleat on a sailboat. Read Less

I had the same question, but I think I figured it out. You can tie the "loose end" of the adjustable cord to a piece of rope using a sheet bend knot (or some other knot). With the adjustable cord tied to a piece of rope you can now use the red plastic end with a conventional bungie.

Answer:
Hi phil,
This particular bungee set has a variety of different length cords, but none of them adjust their length.
Adjustable bungee cords will have a buckle that allows the hook to move along the cord to make different lengths. Some versions will have multiple anchoring points for the hooks so that you can customize the cord's length by selecting particular mounting holes.

Rated 3.5 out of 5 by 17 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Cord for the Price! What I like about these are the assortment of cords and types. This is a nice feature for the price we are paying. My favorite feature is the square before the hook, I use carabiners to hold the cords to items, if slack occures, the cord will still stay on if used with a carabiner and it's very hard to find a good cord with a decent carabiner attached. I use these for everything and probably have more than five sets - never had one break on me - but mostly use it for light use. I tie down my engine cover, use them for tarps, secure containers, tie tubes together when floating down the river, tie things to the boat, etc. I bought a couple extra containers just in case they stop making this style. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great kit To use the adjustable bungee: slide the bare end of the cord through the hole in the red plastic piece (from the smooth side to the open side) until you reach the desired length. hold the cord in position within the hole and then pull the cord tight. As the cord stretches, it shrinks in diameter. As you continue to pull the cord taught, lay it across the red plastic piece into its channel. One in the channel, let go and the cord will hold there, even under tension. As for the kit, I purchased it knowing full well the contents.I don't understand those that complain about what's inside...cant read description? They are holding up well and seem to be good for the money. See picture below: July 27, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by HD should have kept the Joubert bungees I bought two of the Joubert 24 piece assorted bungees over the past few years and have used all the bungees many times. The HDX assortment is worthless to me. For example: The HDX adjustable bungees are very difficult to lock into place where the Joubert version was very easy and a larger size line as well. The plastic loops on the HDX hook bungees do not fit on a 1 inch diameter tube where the Joubert does. For use on a boat where all the tubing is 1 inch diameter this is essential. So I am looking for my receipt so I can return this product November 12, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Many negative issues with each piece It is impossible to identify the individual lengths of the bungees because they are all the same color, proud HD orange :-((........... I marked them with a marker) The eye hook specialty tie down does not work; the strap is too big for the friction hold. THe bungees do not stretch very much. The loop aand ball strap should be of 2 different lengths. F.M. Property Manager, Smyrna GA October 7, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst bungee cord purchase. When I picked up this 24-pack assorted bungee cords, I foolishly assumed that every bungee cord would have a hook on each end. Had I paid more attention, I would have realized that 8 of the 24 cords are "adjustable" or "canopy tarp ties". There was no instruction on how to use them nor was there any available information on-line anywhere. As far as I'm concerned, they are completely useless and a waste of bungee cord material and my money. In hindsight, I should have just figured out what length bungee cords I needed and bought them individually. Variety packs seldom provide the bungee cords you really need. Don't buy this product. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Sizes The container has assorted sizes that are great for any job that you may need a bungee cord for!. I used them to reinforce the chains for my rider mower . (snow plowing) March 13, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Adjustable Cords... The small cords seem frail. But since I haven't used the smaller cords yet, I can't say I have had a problem with them. It took some time to figure out the adjustable cords. You feed the loose end through the hole and across the clamp; stretching it tight through the plastic clamp till the loop you create is the size you want. When the cord stretches thin, you should be able to easily get it to seat itself in the little clampy sections of the plastic piece. So far, they are holding. I can't say I expect the plastic clamps to last long. If they do, I will be pleasantly surprised. I shouldn't have been so lazy and just thought about the actual sizes I needed and bought those. Variety pack doesn't always mean the one you need is in there! November 22, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great value there are plenty of assorted cords and they were perfect for my needs December 11, 2014
