Customer Questions & Answers

how can internal pipe wrench work?

Asked by: anc915
it's really meant to be used for applications where you want to avoid using a regular pipe wrench or adjustable pliers to tighten or loosen a pipe (normally a straight one, otherwise a bent one could be tightened much easier). The shaft that the moving teeth spin on is not symmetric, rather it's sort of oblong and allows the teeth to expand, which grabs the inside of the pipe and allows you to spin it on or off.

I purchased this after I broke the 1/2" pipe coming out of the shower wall so I could remove the rest of the pipe nipple. The 1/2" wrench was probably a couple of mm too small to grab the copper pipe, no matter how many times I tried. The ONLY way these tools helped out was when I got lucky and pounded the tip of the 3/4" wrench onto the broken nipple and backed it out (as seen in picture). Not the tool to use for extracting a broken pipe, that's for sure!

The pipe I needed to remove had a plastic liner on the interior diameter, negating the gripping action of the wrench set. Had there not been a plastic liner, there's a good possibility the wrench would have worked, but I don't know for sure. This is why I gave a 3 star rating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked almost perfectly Great tools to have in my service bag, saves a lot of time extracting a short piece of pipe that might otherwise get damaged in the removal process!
