It works with the same concept as an external pipe wrench where the grip increases with the more pressure that is applied. Once the initial "bite" of the wrench is obtained, the "grab" of the bite increases as more pressure is applied to the wrench so that it won't slip.

The internal pipe wrench uses an offset pivot point (the spindle on which the movable teeth portion of the tool rotates is slightly off center) so once an initial bite is taken, it applies pressure against this spindle, applying outward pressure against the inside of the pipe. Read Less

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Didn't work My shower pipe coming out from the wall broke odd and a piece of that pipe was in the pipe. I have 1/2" pipe and bought this tool to remove the broken piece inside the pipe. The tool marked 1/2" was too small and the next size was too big to fit inside the pipe. So I tried the 1/2" size again and it would not grab the broken piece pipe since it was too small. I made sure the tool was at its maximum diameter be rotating it to the widest point since its on a eccentric but it still wouldn't grab the broken piece of pipe. I eventually had to buy another tool which did remove the broken piece. I replaced the pipe in with a 1/2 inch pipe so I'm positive that my pipe is 1/2 inch. Poor design. September 23, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Fits iron pipe. Does not fit PVC pipe. Fits into iron pipe (which never breaks.) Does not fit into PVC pipe, for which a tool like this is actually needed. This should be clearly indicated on the packaging. October 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Handy For The Price I've only used it once but it did what I needed it to do. My access was limited by tile. Extracted a nipple that had probably been installed in the 1940's and installed the replacement. August 16, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor quality tool will be returning Low quality tool, purchase a better one if you want it to work soft metal is what this tool is made from August 9, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Garbage The 1//2" wrench broke on its second use. I was installing a black iron close nipple on an air line. Tool was not abused, it was turned slowly with an appropriately sized combination wrench. On the fourth turn the wrench twisted in two. May 4, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Better Than Expected When a valve cartridge for my bathtub disassembled during removal, leaving the outer casing lodged in the valve, I was stuck. After a visit from the plumber (who could not remove the casing) I now had an estimate of $1,000 to replace the valve so I went in search of alternatives and ran across this product. I read some of the product reviews for this tool (one in particular that said that it broke the second time that it was used) I thought "I only need to use it once", and made the purchase. I also hedged my bet by purchasing some easy-outs as well. Skeptical at first, I went to work. Less than a minute later, the casing was removed from the valve. This is the casing that the plumber said could not be removed and would have to be cut out (which he was unwilling to do), possibly damaging the valve itself, or the entire valve replaced, and I didn't even have to open up the easy-outs. Needless to say, I am ecstatic about this tool! I have only used it the once and can't comment on its longevity, but it was worth every penny I spent on it (avoiding the $1,000 plumbers bill) even if I never use it again. May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very helpful tool I had a shower head broken and stucked in the pipe, this tool helped me to removed it. The nipple came out in Pieces. Look at the Pictures I'm posting May 18, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by too small for plumbing fittings The range of gripping offered by these internal tools is not adequate for thin walled fixtures like shower arms. Probably ok for nominal sized metal pipes though. April 12, 2016
