Answer:
HDX Melt-Blown Household Filter (HDX2BF4) reduces sediment and is 5 micron. If you have high amounts of sand and/or sediment, a lower micron level will plug faster and need to be changed more often. HDX offers several filters with different micron ratings:
Carbon Household Filter (HDX2CF4 - 5 micron)
String Wound Household Filter (HDX2SF4 - 10 micron)
Pleated Household Filter (HDX2PF4 - 30 micron)

I would select a micron rating based on how often you want to change your filters.
Another alternative is to use the Glacier Bay Automatic Household Filtration System. This system is designed to reduce sediment and sand, and includes a 60 micron screen. It also does not require any filter changes. Answer:
The filter life for the Melt-Blown Household Filter varies with local water conditions and household usage. It is recommended to replace your filter every 3 months. If you experience a drop in water flow before this time frame, that is an indication that the filter should be replaced.

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 18 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Does the job well, for my purpose I used one cartridge all of the heating season for the water supply to my "auto-fill" humidifier. The humidifier, which had been a manual fill unit, usually had to have the wicks changed twice a season. After converting the humidifier to "auto-fill" and adding this filter to the supply line, the wicks were still fairly clean after the entire heating season, without changing them mid season. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by it is what I needed So far it seems to be doing the job I intended it to be doing, keeping calcium deposits out of my water, out of my washing machine, out of my pipes....the water company should be held liable and is not! May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Water filters Good product. Our well water requires replacing the filter once a month. I've tried the rope type and found this style filter traps more particals. April 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great! Does a Great Job of filtering out the small particles from my silt ridden water. March 8, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Too tall The core is about 1/8" longer than the GE or Culligan brand. Because of the extra 1/8" the filters will not work properly in most Culligan Filter systems. The filter leaks about a drop every 30 seconds. I gave it a one star because it would not let be give it zero stars January 6, 2016

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great product I use these instead of the spun yarn looking ones because they catch more sediment. They work great and are easy to change. October 25, 2015
