Customer Questions & Answers

cutter jaws not opening when latch is released and handles are pulled apart.

I have released the safety catch and pulled the handles apart as instructed.

Check to see if you have grit or dirt in the mechanism. I frequently spray mine with WD40 and work it to get crud out of it. It can get crudded up if you drop it or dirt gets into it.

Can this tool be used to successfully cut plastic tailpieces and P-trap arms?

I am concerned the plastic may be too brittle and may shatter.
Asked by: SinkFixer
I am the original poster, and found I was able to use the Ratcheting PVC Cutter to make clean cuts with the tailpieces and P-trap arms if I applied the tool as a conventional tubing cutter rather than a force driven cutter. I first wrapped a piece of thin cardboard around the tailpiece as a guide to scribe a line around the entire circumference. I then aligned the tube in the cutter, applied mild pressure, and rotated the tailpiece while closely monitoring the cut to keep the blade on the scribed line. I then advanced the blade again and repeated the procedure until the cut was complete. The larger diameter pipe is difficult to keep seated in the tool's cradle, but it helps to rotate the pipe into the cradle rather than away. Unfortunately, this puts the leading edge of the blade on the side closer to the tool's pivot point, which makes it harder to see its path relative to the scribed line. In the end, I achieved a clean and square cut, although an experienced craftsman probably could do the same task using just a utility knive and achieve results that were "good enough".

Are there replacement blades available?

Asked by: Mike
Not that I can find. Wish I'd just bought a good one instead of the 3-4 of these I've bought so far.

I cut 1 inch PVC pipe straight every time. For the price, I think this is an excellent product. Consider the fact that the $50 ones cost $15-$20 for a blade change, and it's an easy decision. Is this a tool for a pro, that is cutting pipe all day long? Probably not. But, for homeowner scale projects, you can't go wrong. I have made over 200 cuts (I kept track due to the reviews here) and it cuts as quick and square as the day I bought it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your money I needed a pair of pvc cutters fir a small project. It was less than 50 cuts through 1" and 3/4" PVC. After only a few cuts, the blade started to chip and bend in small areas. After 10-15 cut, they were useless so I took out my saw and used that instead. I couldn't even find a replacement blade fit them. I used to work on lawn sprinklers for a living and used PVC cutters almost every day for over 10 years. I have never seen a pair this cheap and this useless.

I bought these about a year ago for 1/2" and 3/4" Sch. 40 PVC sprinkler pipe. I made no more than two dozen cuts. Yesterday I was working on another sprinkler project and found the cuts were really rough. I noticed a big 1/4" chip out of the blade. I went to HD online searching for a replacement and found these reviews. I wish I had read the reviews first. DO NOT BUY. CHIPPING BLADES!!!!

Initial cuts went well however after that the blade began to chip making further cuts difficult to impossible. Home Depot should revisit this product and make appropriate quality revisions to the blade if they want to reduce the amount of returns and build a better reputation for their tools.

This product is made well but it will not cut PVC straight, every time it cuts pipe it is at an extreme angle. The last pair I had was about 10 years old before I broke them and they cut pipe very well. I guess you get what you pay for so spend a little more for better quality, something that does not say made in china!
