Some of the reviews here made me cautious. But I was only cutting 1/2" PVC for a project build and tool wise, wanted something that could make a clean cut. I could use a hacksaw (Plan B) but I'd have to clean the burrs off. This cutter functioned without fail. On inspection, the blade was undamaged and very sharp, the tool felt pretty solid and no adjustment needed. I found the instructions easy to follow, and from that the handles were easy to pull apart. Cranking the handles to cut the tube took the usual effort that I had no problem with. The ratcheting made the cutting easy and with the PVC pipe I had, almost too easy. I've made a dozen PVC cuts and they were pretty square. With all the lengths cut, I was able to connect these with the tee and elbow connects for my project build. I would recommend this tool.

I purchased this cutter because I have a fair amount of in ground 3/4" PVC that I occasionally need to cut to irrigate my fruit trees here in southern, California. For obvious reason, using the type of pipe cutter that swings around the pipe isn't as convenient in tight places, but those cutters do a better job of giving you a square cut. You can get a square cut with these by turning the pipe, but I've had only marginal success with using the ratchet action to get a nice cut that isn't slanted. This is my third purchase of this item, because I'm obviously trying the same thing and expecting a different outcome. The set in the picture, I've only had for a little over a year and was cutting a piece of 3/4" PVC when a piece popped out of the center of the cutting blade (see picture) - so I would rate the quality here fairly low. My other complaint with these is that I often have to hold the blade into the cut with my other hand in order to get them to ratchet - the ol' squeeze and ratchet with one hand doesn't work all that great.

It sounds like from previous reviews that there are higher quality tools for larger jobs/many cuts. But if you need something that will do the job for the occasional homeowner repair (like when I puncture an underground sprinkler hose), this is a great value.

This is definitely not the best PVC cutter out there, but for the price, it does the job. Used it during a bathroom remodel and it saved a lot of time verses my small tube cutter. I don't foresee the blade staying sharp through many more projects, but given the price, it was a solid purchase for short term use.

Very poor quality. Ratching system is terrible and doesn't work most of the time. Blade dulls after only a few cuts. Just another cheap import under HD's private label.

The only hard part was figuring out that you need to pull it out hard for the blade to open. But it was very fun for my son to cut the pvc with it

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by DatGuyDere Useless for slip joint fittings
This may work okay for rigid PVC pipe, but it is useless for slip-joint tubing, and before someone tells me that it's not intended for tubing, it says that is, right on the package.

For some reason, the cutter is very tight. I sprayed WD40, but it didn't help. It's really difficult and tiresome to close the blade. Perhaps the handle is not long enough and therefore, there's less leverage. The blade seems sharp enough. I'm going back to MMC (which is not available at Home Depot) My MMC has served me well for over 30 yrs. I regret purchasing the current cutter.
