Customer Questions & Answers

Will a respirator seal over it

Asked by: Shawn
A good quality respirator will seal adequately if it is tightened properly. The cheaper paper mask type respirators will not seal as good, but should be sufficient for most jobs such as painting.

What is the cotton treated with? When breathing through the fabric for an hour or so and then entering a room where there is a gas range you notice a very strange chemical taste and smell. It last for a few hours. Just like when you use certain paints or varnishes in a house that has a gas water heater or range. It must be the smell agent that is added to natural gas that is also interacting with whatever chemical treatment is applied to these spray socks.
Asked by: SJK
I have not noticed this during use. It may be that you are breathing through the hood and it is filtering out many of the particles that you normally overlook. Once you take it off, you then are more prone to noticing smells that usually go unnoticed. Think of it like being in the city, and then going to the country where you can smell the fresh air. When you return to the city, you can tell the difference and smell the city pollution for a short time. Of course, this is just my opinion of things, but I have not noticed any issues with the hoods.

Spray Sock Hood is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light and Comfortable The HDX pullover spray sock is lightweight stretchable sheer cotton for comfort and breathability. The eye opening can be positioned under or over the nose or stretched beneath the chin for use with a respirator. Feels almost weightless in use—good in a hot environment. Recommended for users seeking comfortable protection. Elaborate protection is of little value if it is too cumbersome to use. No such problem here.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works good for $2.50 This is a disposable "ski mask" to wear while painting. It smelled like formaldehyde. Of course, if you are a professional painter you probably will not notice. If you are a DIYer then get used to it ( for $2.50 ) or get a more expensive buff. It was comfortable to wear and did not get hot. Check out the pics to see it in more detail. MADE IN THE USA!

Keeping spray chemicals off your skin is very important even for the homeowner who only sprays the yard, garden, and vegetation once or twice a year. This protective hoodie is made of fabric and stretches over the head, face, and neck and is washable after use. I liked the feature that it covers your hair as well as the skin so that any mist might not cling to your hair. Of course it is hot to use in the summer, but then the little masks that cover the nose and mouth are hot also. This product is not for professionals who spray regularly for a living.

This spray sock hood fits very well and is long enough to tuck inside your shirt for complete coverage, except for the eyes, but safety glasses takes care of that nicely. I don't spray paint as much as I use to , but it's nice having when I do. It has other uses besides spray painting as well. I do some tree trimming also, and this helps keep the pruning seal off of my head also. The wind up in a tree can blow more than when on the ground. The soft material is very comfortable and not very hot here in Texas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Provides great protection The Home Depot sock hood provides protection from paint blowback while using a paint sprayer. Fits snugly as it stretches to fit most, if not, all head sizes. A hat can also be worn to provide more coverage protection. Cheap enough to buy/use multiples, depending upon project size. Helped with cold weather and wind, however, might be a bit warm during summer months.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Low cost basic protection This review is on the HDX Protective Spray Sock headcover. The item provides basic protection to the head and neck while spraying paint. It also provides some protection from the sun and wind.. It is a very low tech and low quality solution. It works but there are some drawbacks. First off the image on the package is deceiving. It shows a top that form fits the head. This is not the case. The product is a tube with a flat seam on the top. When wearing it there two points, like ears, that stick up above the head. Not a problem with function but could catch on something if the area one is working in has a low ceiling. Next is the stitching, very low quality. There was a section on the face cut-out where the thread was unraveling out of the package. Also the bottom seam has no stitching to prevent the fabric from unraveling. What I found to be most troubling was the smell of the fabric. It has a very unpleasant chemical aroma. The instructions state the fabric can be pulled up to cover the nose but the smell of the fabric was so bad I couldn't do that. It is hand washable so maybe the smell can be washed out but with no overcast stitch on the bottom edge I think it might fall apart with one wash. This is a low cost, throw away solution to getting basic protection where it covers. The cloth was cool and comfortable to wear, except for the smell.
