They are very difficult to open, but if you use a knife to cut a small slice into the plastic at the opening, you can give yourself a spot where the two sheets separate.
And yes, the roll is unwieldy. It works best if you hang the roll on a rod so it can be unspooled as needed (similar to toilet paper).
The plastic is heavy duty. I don't need to seal them shut at the top so they work just fine for me.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by bpatr3363 Worst Bags I have ever seen
Bags are practically impossible to separate to open. I took me about 3-4 minutes to do my first one and not mush better on the second. I just finished filling the first one and when I took it out of the barrel the bottom opened up. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME ON THESE. I WON'T BUY THEM AGAIN. ULINE is a little more expensive but much batter and worth the difference in price.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Anniie Too Heavy to tie closed
I ordered these bags when my local Home Depot stopped carrying Clear 55-Gal Drum Liners. The picture online showed them to be in a box approximately the same size...uhh NO! They showed up in a huge box, very heavy and these liners are so thick they can't be tied closed. These bags are terrible for bagging items we use. It really ticks me off that they no longer carry the Husky Clear Drum Liners which were great.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Dave Not as good as the previous Husky model in a box
Thought I was getting the boxed 55 gal drum liner. Instead it came in a wide roll, unboxed, and unweidly. Please restock the old Husky model.
