I removed and rinsed the filter today and replaced it after I dried it with paper towel. There is now a faint whistling noise emitting from the unit. It's almost the frequency of crickets but it is continuous. Help!

I don't like a noisy fan but wonder if this unit is considerably quieter than the average one?

Answer:
The sound level varies depending on fan speed up to approximately 59 dB at the maximum fan speed setting. By way of comparison, 60 dB is the sound level of normal conversation, measured 3 feet away, the average ambient noise level in a home is 50 dB. A vacuum cleaner produces 70 dB measured 3 feet away.

Answer:
No. The noise put out by this is similar to a window air unit. If you don't like the sound of a window unit, you probably won't like the sound of this. I do not find it offensive, but that is a matter of sensitivity to sound.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good portable AC This AC effectively cools a 200 square foot bedroom with 9 1/2 foot ceilings even with imperfect sealing to the outside--the imperfect sealing was my choice. I have used it for the past 6 weeks. It gets down to 77 within minutes. I've gotten it cooler but don't like it really cold so haven't tried it much below 75. Reasonably quiet as portable AC's go, viz., I can sleep through the night without waking. Window AC's are definitely better if you can do it. (See picture-I faced an issue with a window on a fire escape that also has a gate so I elected to install this through a small hole so I could simply raise the window and get out in case of fire. The external hose connection supplied was wider than the size of my previously created hole so we used the one from my prior AC with the old sliding part but new hose (hose diameter is standard). If you are doing a normal double-hung installation this is not a problem. I used my prior portable--8,000 BTU--infrequently because it always woke me up and it labored for an hour to get the temperature down to 79 degrees. So this is a miracle by comparison. I find the storage of the remote (which I thought, initially, was genius) a minor nuisance because of the need to fit it back in precisely. This is REALLY minor. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great so far! My condo only has A/C from June to September, so needed something during the late spring and early fall. I bought a 10,000 BTU unit for my 216 sf bedroom and a 12,000 BTU unit for my 576 sf living/dining room/kitchen. Both are vented out sliding glass doors, so I had to rig them a bit to make it work. But they both easily cool off the spaces they are in to 68 degrees, and quickly. Wish they were a bit quieter, but in reality they are quieter and cool much more efficiently than my buildings A/C. You have to vent them for these to work as the motor creates a fair amount of heat/exhaust. I've only had them for a few weeks, so hoping they hold up for the long term. They are a bit heavy and even with wheels are a bit difficult to move around on carpet. October 8, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A great way to deal with a hot day We don't get many really hot days, but when it gets hot our master bedroom can be unbearable. This unit was easy to set up and did a good job cooling down the room ... and was quiet enough that we could leave it on overnight. Fan mode is quiet, cooling mode is louder ... but it didn't scare the cats and my wife could sleep through it ... so it wasn't too bad. One thing to consider is where you will be placing the unit. It's a substantial unit (but looks nice) and needs power and a window. Ours is partially blocking a closet, but it's well worth the cooling and it won't be there continuously September 2, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Mediocre at best The air that comes out is cool - but the compressor makes so much hot air that it creates its own heat source. The panels are not big enough for my sliding glass door - so I had to put the vent in my tiny bathroom window. The panel was too big. The ducting connections are hard to work with - the ducting is too short for my setup. I ended up breaking a few bathroom decorations as I tried to get this working. I faced the unit toward my room. After 4 hours the temperature showed 5 degrees lower. I left it on for more hours trying to get the temperature below 70. Never happened. Very unhappy - but I think they're all pretty much the same. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Takes the edge off The good Points: It was really easy to install and fits perfectly in the place I had picked out for it. It blows a good strong stream of cold air and keeps the room I have it in about 5 degrees cooler than outside if the Temp is in the 90's, and it does better if it's only around 85 outside. I live in a very dry climate (New Mexico) and it has made things a little better this summer. The less Good Points: It's pretty noisy, but not outlandish. It added a noticeable chunk to our electric bill. Nights are cool here, so we turn it off around 11 pm...and it added about $30 to the electric bill. August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very good product for the price and size Easy to assemble, stylish and has a good performance for it's size. On high humid days it's best to use the dehumidifier first for a few minutes before changing over to cooling. I found it not only makes the room feel more comfortable, but it also drops the temperature faster. September 20, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Know the difference. Please know that a 10,000 BTU portable air conditioner does not produce the same cooling that a window version with the same BTUs. I had to return this because it only cooled my room to 80 degrees when it was 90 or more outside. I need to purchase a 12,000 BTU. It did install easily and controlled the humidity very well. I did mention that I was replacing a 10,000 BTU window air conditioner to the person I placed the order with. They also did not know that I would need a larger BTU unit. September 6, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Keeps me cool! Nice looking piece of equipment. No, it wont get as cold as a window unit. Hose connection/vent is through the window and is awkward but when it is hot and you need to sleep, you can deal with it. I haven't had to drain the system yet, it somehow is not required. I am not in a high humidity place so that might be an issue if you live in such an area. It has three modes, fan, dehumidifier and a/c plus 3 fan speeds and a remote control, wish the buttons were back lit though. This model does not have a heater function. Of all the units I looked at, this one is on the 'quiet' side...well, not really, not like a window unit but its not unbearable. I work nights and sleep days. I set it to come on at 10 or 11 am so I am already sleeping and it does not wake me up. August 30, 2016
