Customer Questions & Answers

do i need to use the vent hose

Asked by: Anonymous
Part of the air conditioning process is removing heat and humidity from a room. Operating the unit without an exhaust vent will not allow heat and humidity to be removed from the room. The unit will not function properly without an exhaust vent.

Is the Haier Commercial Cool 12,000 BTU Portable Air-Conditioner a window Air-Conditioner.

Asked by: Anonymous
You'll have to check that with HAIER -AMERICA. The COMMERCIAL COOL units are of the rolling portable type. I have had window units prior to buying 2 of these and one major advantage is NO BUGS or outside air can come inside with tise closed unit and nothing but a vent hose. I also just replaced all the windows inmy house and did NOT want to put any screw holes in the window..... this allows installation with doing any of that. Also with this unit the compressor and fan motors are not exposed to the outside elements. LAMF

Can the unit be vented through a wall like a dryer vent?

The unit will not function properly without an exhaust vent. As long as you can provide a hole the same size as the exhaust connection this should work without incident.

That being said I believe this unit would work well if you plan on using it periodically. The blower fan (that removes hot air through the exhaust vent / hose) is a serious design flaw. It is made with cheap plastic that will eventually shatter into pieces rendering the unit inoperable (see image). We have gone through at least three of these units in the past couple years and each one failed due to the same reasons aforementioned. Warranty does cover this but only once... I will be shopping for a better unit. Other than that the unit is great and works flawlessly. Shocked at how well the dehumidifier works since we've had to empty a 5 gallon bucket several times during the summer. If it wasn't for the blower fan I would have given this 5/5 stars.

I bought this unit July 2016, just under a year old and the blower wheel inside the unit has broken. This is the second unit I have had that this has happened on. First unit made it two years before breaking (outside of warranty) while this unit has broken inside of the 1 year warranty, it is going on two weeks and the Haier authorized repairmen "hasn't been able to get the part yet". I am sharing this experience in the hopes that I can help someone else avoid the same experience. Will not be buying any Haier unit again that is for certain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice and cool! No issues with my unit over the past year and a half that I've used this. Yes it's... Nice and cool! No issues with my unit over the past year and a half that I've used this. Yes it's bulky, but when your only A/C option is a portable one, beggar's can't be choosers. Its on wheels, so pushing it over my hardwood floors isn't an issue. It will be if you have plush carpet. Even though it says it cools a 450-500 sq/ft room, I've found it works just fine in my open 750 sq/ft place. If you have it in a sunny window, it tends to "over" cool since the gauge feels that heat. On cooler nights I switch it to fan mode via the remote control from my bedside. Otherwise, I just leave it on with my ideal temp set and let it regulate itself.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Air Conditioner review This air conditioner does a great job cooling down our medium sized room. I use a box fan to distribute the air out into other rooms. While I think the unit does a great job cooling, I wish it were quieter. I, personally, cannot sleep with this unit on because of the noise it makes when the thermostat kicks it into a higher or lower gear to regulate the temperature. That noise jolts me awake. But, i understand that it'll never be as quiet as central air. I do enjoy the timer that can be set to turn on after a few hours, or run for a few hours. In the future, I would purchase a unit that could be programmed to run at a particular time of day for a set number of hours.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great purchase Unit works as described- was placed in a 20x20 un- insulated garage- to cool the area for our dogs and also doubles as a photography studio- weather had been in the high 90's, easily brought the area down to 75-78- when allowed to run overnight to precondition the area, easily held the temp at 72-75 when outside was 99. No issues yet- I permanently installed an exhaust port on the wall. the air from this hose is very hot- its important that you seal the exhaust area so no hot air gets pulled back in the room.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't last 4 months I read the reviews just like you are. Everything sounded good. People seemed to be enjoying them. I don't know if I got a lemon, or what but mine was nothing like what the positive reviews said. Mine repeats many of the same issues others have had that have rated this unit poorly. First off, it is loud. Like something's wrong sort of loud. It rattled and vibrated loudly upon start up of the condenser and stayed that way until it shut off with a sudden thud that always startled me. It cooled wonderfully. That was the one good thing about this unit. Unfortunately the unit broke not 4 months after my getting it. It happened a 12:30 am, a clatter that sounded as if someone had threw rocks into a blender and hit frappe! Scared the living daylights out of me. I turned the unit off, unplugged it and took the hose off the back to find plastic shards in the hose and bits stuck in the vent itself. Upon using a flashlight to peer inside, I saw more bits of broken plastic. I called the warranty number who gave me the number of a repair place here in my area. Speaking with the repair people over the phone, they informed me that the fan blower wheel thingy, (they used technical terms I can't remember 100%) was broken and that they see it quite a bit in these units. That a bad lot of units were sent out and buy one of these is a bit like playing Russian Roulette. I asked what would be a quality portable AC and the said, "get an LG" So, if you are looking for a portable AC, please follow their advice and go with LG.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great unit except for flimsy hose The unit works as advertised. Cools very nicely. But like others have said, the hose end that is used with the vertical window adaptor is VERY FLIMSY AND FALLS off if you just breathe on it. It's supposed to clip into place on the plastic window slider. It does but in Mickey Mouse fashion. I used duct tape to keep it in place. I would give this unit 5 stars but for the reason mentioned above it only gets 4.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good unit for a year...Then the Fan Blades melt from the heat :( This unit was pretty good for the first 12 months, then it started making some noises -- since it was beyond the 12 month warranty period, I'd take a look at what was up. It turns out that the blower motor has this plastic connection around the wheel which comes apart -- so it was wedged between the outer wall and the blades -- thus the HORRIBLE noise. Anyway, I had a Haier prior to this one which last 6 years without any issues -- but given this one lasted a little over 14 months -- I'm done with Haier. It looks like the heat from the blower probably contributed to the breakdown of the plastic. Cheap parts leaves the consumer holder the short end of the stick. Bummer.
