I have had it's bigger brother to help the central when the temperature goes to 100 degrees and it does the job. I also got a smaller one for the bedroom at night. However if the central goes out your stuck in one room. I went to Home Depot and they were out of the one I wanted and settled for this. It's ok and it keeps the living room tolerable around 85 to 90. I'd suggest that if you're afraid of having to use one and you're an area where the temperature soars when your central might fail that you at least get one that will cool an area twice the size. I agree with the review about it being a chore to install but it's a lot easier than installing a window unit. What I didn't appreciate is that I had to cut off 4 ft. of my garden hose for a drain tube.

While I have only had this product less than two months, it has performed well. When I read reviews for these types of products, I'm more interested in longevity, so this review is based more on a nearly identical unit I have been running for almost 5 years. It is the same manufacturer, identical in appearance and BTUs but does not have the heat function that this one does. It still performs flawlessly and is the reason I bought this second unit for my garage. The original unit helps cool an upstairs room during the hot Texas summers.
I really like that you do not have to hook up a drain when in A/C mode.

I don't find this to be too loud. I listen to the radio while I work in the shop. This helps a LOT! You really need to vent the hot air elsewhere. The cool air is great, but there is a lot more hot air coming out the back.
Criticism: The vent out of the unit is 5" which is really insulting since the industry standards are either 4" or 6". The idea of a 5" vent out of the back likely is the brain child of an accountant who should be fired.
The delivered solution is barely adequate if you have a venting solution within 2 to 3 feet. If you need to vent the hot air further than that, then you will have to kluge something together, and I recommend an insulated kluge since there is a LOT of HOT AIR. I'm sending mine into the attic.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by techvette Underpowered unit with unimpressive build quality.
While I was excited to see a12k BTU unit for such a reasonable price, it ultimately did not meet my needs or expectations. I returned it after a few days and replaced it with an LG wall unit.
- Despite being rated at 12,000 BTUs, this unit failed to significantly alter the temperature in my 192 sq. ft. office.
- When operating, the compressor and fan would turn on for about ten seconds, then off for awhile, then repeat the cycle indefinitely. Normally, I would think that it was power issue, but in this case the AC unit was the only thing on the circuit.
- Housing feels like cheap plastic, creaked a bit whenever I moved it.
Some good points:
- Unit was relatively quiet.
- Remote control snaps into the front of the unit, making it harder to lose. (However, who really needs a remote control for their air conditioner designed to cool a relatively small room?)

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by DoItMyselfList I like it but it's noisy, and you have to drain it hourly if you dehumidify
The product's description says it removes 100 pints of water daily in dehumidification mode. That's incorrect - it removes water automatically only in AC mode. If you dehumidify, unscrew and unplug the lower drain hole hourly, or the water overflows on the floor. It is noisy, so I have to increase the TV volume every time the compressor kicks on. It cools very well in less humid conditions than here in Georgia. Installation is tricky, but I got a sense of accomplishment when I figured it out.

I bought this for our enclosed Lanai. I was concerned about needing to drain the pan. There is no clear instructions on setting up a drain line if needed. There is no instruction for dehumidification only mode. It is just a setting on the remote.
I have used it in A/C mode only, setting at 81-82 degrees. Just to keep Lanai bearable. It does a good job so far. Lanai is 11 X 24 western exposure with sliding windows all around and roller curtains.
I have not had to drain anything yet.
I drilled a 5 inch hole through the plastic window in line with the exhaust and am venting directly from the unit, no hose attached. I ran a foam weather-stripping around the pipe to help seal it against the window.
There was cosmetic shipping damage, not visible on the box. cracked plastic on rear of unit and hose fitting.

Pros: Overall great product. I have been zone heating my living room with an oil radiator for many years for comfort and savings. In order to keep my bedroom cooler than the rest of the house I decided to try zone cooling. Has been working great so far, the rest of the house is getting into the upper 70s with windows open, but my bedroom stays a cool 62. Not sure on the savings, but the comfort is great.
Cons: The window vent assembly is pretty flexible, but to get it to fit my modern 2004 windows it took a bit of creativity and engineering using the enclosed kit. Also, while the unit vents most of the moisture through the vent, with spring rains and the accompanying humidity I am emptying a few table spoons of water per day.
