I live in Sacramento, California where the summer temperatures routinely reach over 100 degrees. My house is 1,098 sq ft and the area I’m trying to cool is approximately 525 sq ft. My 20 year old Amana, 15,000 btu, wall unit that worked great for 19 years was not working properly so the air conditioning repair person recommended I replace the unit. After many hours of research (Consumer Reports, general contractors, appliance stores, vendor websites, neighbors and other applicable sources of information), I determined it would be difficult to obtain a 15,000 – 18,000 wall mounted unit because I would have to order one from New Jersey. Note: my newly installed dual pane windows were not large enough to install a window mounted unit and I would have had to remove one window and replace it with custom window to accommodate a window amounted unit. Therefore I selected a Haier, 14,000 btu, portable unit because I’m familiar with the Haier name and 14,000 btu was the largest unit I could find. I purchased the unit on-line on 04/21/15 and received it about a week later. I didn’t install it until mid May and only used it a few times until the 2nd week in June. Since 06/08/15 though today, 07/02/15, I’ve monitored how well this unit cools the area. After taking over 300 temperature reading at various points in the house and at various times during the day I conclude this unit cools an area of approximately 25 sq ft and not the 600 sq ft as advertised. For every 5 feet you move away from the cool air coming out of the unit the temperature increases by 4 degrees. For instance, on 06/30/15 the temperature in Sacramento reached 106. Directly in front of the unit it was 88 and down the hallway it was 97 (I rotate 4 different thermometers in order to ensure accurate readings). During the period of 8 pm until 10 pm I have the unit running on high with the doors open because it's 90 degrees outside and over 90 inside. I did read the rating on homedepot.com and noticed a few with the same problem before I purchased but the majority were positive. I would rate this unit lower than poor but that's the lowest rating that's available. I have to use this unit because my 94 year old Mom needs what little cooling this unit provides. Due to the other positive ratings this unit must perform well for some but I'm truly dissatisfied and disappointed with this purchase.

The box was delivered to my door. This was great as I have back problems. It was a little difficult to get out of the box, (due to back problems). The a/c unit was packed very securely. The set up was extremely easy. The only thing I had a problem with was the extension pieces for the window. One was 5 inches to short and the other 5 inches too long. Used a hack saw and fixed it. As soon as it was installed, I was getting cool air. The remote feature was a bonus. You can adjust the temp without getting up and going to the unit to do that. I loved the fact that I did not have to empty a pan water also. I am very happy with my purchase.

Somewhat noisy. Bought 2, one works great, one needs to be replaced. It leaks. Company is replacing.
Installation is easy. Very heavy, though. Good thing it has wheels.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by KelliP A bit louder than I thought it would be
The unit was easy to install in the vertical sliding windows. I bought 3 units for my office building to use in conjunction with heat coating on the west facing windows. The ceilings are high which makes the units work harder than I anticipated. I don't pay for the electricity so I can't comment on the expense. The units are louder than I anticipated. The previous reviews noted that the unit was very quiet but I am finding they are a bit louder than I would have liked. The timer is easy to set when I leave in the afternoon to come on in the morning. Overall, I think these would be better suited for a home with 8-10 foot ceilings.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by magwink This product is easy to install
I read all the reviews decided to take a chance and I am so glad I did. House is 1400 sq ft. a great room and 3 bedrooms. It keeps the house cool, 2 of the bedrooms have their own air conditioners, although I leave the master bedroom open at night and do not need to run the one in that room. I couldn't be happier coming home to a cool house and my dogs aren't dying from heat when we are gone. We can even cook dinner something we couldn't do before the air conditioner arrived. It really is nice, works great has been running all the time with no problems very worthwhile purchase, especially since we now have hot summers.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by mammadukes ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS A/C
I was tired of asking someone to install and uninstall my a/c every year. I was able to install by myself. There is no need to empty bucket. This is the best a/c I have ever owned.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by JimC1 Happy with purchase regarding usage.
This unit does provide a cooling of the room temperature and extends for a good area beyond both as an AC and in the dehumidifier settings. I am very please with the purchase. The only negative factor it the distance it needs to sit from the window to accommodate the hoses.
The designers should provide for a more traditional decor buy using a wood finish or look or at least provide options. In my 200 year old home where the windows are too narrow to place a window unit, this solves that problem. However, in a 200 year old home, this unit sticks out and does not provide any visual accompaniment.
