My home office is in the garage. Fortunately it's insulated. The one window I have is up high. I installed this portable unit (on a platform about 5 feet high) to cool down my office during the summer months and heat it during the winter months. This is a 14000 btu unit, but ti seems to me that is not enough btu to cool down a garage in a NC summer. It will certainly make a 90 degree day feel like a 77 degree day in the garage, but if your expecting 72 on a 90 degree day, I don't think that is going to happen. You may need a 28000 btu to do that. (full blown window unit) Either way, this unit works good for my needs and keeps the humidity at a comfortable level. Add in a few fans to circulate the air and it works good. Overall I am very happy with the unit. The unit does require it's own 15 amp circuit breaker. That might be kind of hard to do if you got anything else that takes up amps in a given room. Fortunately, I have mine on an isolated 20amp breaker and I run a heavy duty 10 gauge extension cord to it. (It says not to use an extension cord, but I think they are talking about the silly extension cords that are too small). It does have a timer to turn off. (like a tv sleep timer). It's supposed to have a timer to turn it back on, but for the life of me, I cannot figure that out. This unit would be awesome if it had a programmable timer and temp control feature. M-F after 7pm, increase temp to 78 etc. It's just an timer to turn on and off. No programmable temp feature. I do recommend if you order this and have it shipped, don't just plug it in the first day you get it. Let it sit "upright" for 24 hours to make sure all the coolant has settled from shipping. It might have been laying on it's side during shipping. It is quite heavy. (80 lbs+)

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by supaponzu Cools well, but noise could be a factor for some.
We have this in a playroom/TV room as a temporary measure since the room's dedicated HVAC died. It does cool the room nicely (haven't tried heat yet), but it is somewhat loud while watching television. For our family, this hasn't been much of an issue, as we just switch it off during those times. The noise isn't bad overall, and definitely not loud enough to be an issue throughout the rest of the day. But it is a consideration if you're thinking of putting this unit in a similar setup.

We needed A/C for the weekend house. I had always thought window units were the way to go. This beast cools the entire house in 100 degree heat for about $5/day. It's been a lifesaver. We funnel the hot air out the wall with a dryer vent so you don't have this big metal box sticking out of a window in your house.

Cools as expected and controls are well done, as is remote. Just noisier than I had hoped.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by tc We love our portable A/C!
Easy to set up, definitely effective. Water is easy to drain from the back.
It's a little louder than expected when it's in dehumidifying mode, but it's still worth it!
Heavy, but if you have the right window set up, the wheels make it easy to move around. We have to have it up on a bench, but we weren't really planning on moving it anyway.
Puts out a TON of cold air. Haven't tried it in heater mode yet (not sure we'll ever have to...). Dry air in the house makes all the difference, and you can feel the difference almost immediately.
The tubes coming out of it are big, but you don't notice them after a bit. Someone was over, and they hadn't even noticed till we pointed them out. And you can take them out and detract them pretty easily. We don't even bother - they're not a huge deal. They are also impressively rigid/flexible, so they don't droop or anything - they go the exact route that you want them to.
Definitely covers our whole living room, about the size that it says that it does!
Love it - expensive, but if you need it, and don't have air flow and it gets humid and hot where you are, get it. Get it now!

It just doesn't perform. I got it for our upstairs which consists of 3 bedrooms real close to each other for a total of less than 500 square feet. I thought, since it was rated at 500 sqft, it should offer some sort of relief. NOPE. It can't even cool off my bedroom (225 sqft), never mind the rest of the space. And I live in Seattle. It is about 85 degrees outside today and I cant get one small room below 77 degrees with all the doors closed.
Do not waste your money on this unit.

Love this unit. I have run through a bit over the last couple years in the LA heat. This one has stood the test of time, and also the quietest one I have come across. Even my landlord made a comment about the lack of noise and thought about buying it. The heat feature is definitely a plus.

I read these reviews before the decision to purchase. I guess there is a lemon produced every so often? However ours was not one of them! We put this in our dinning room; about a 1400 square foot space; with westerly facing windows along the wall; direct sun 50% of the day. In 90 degree outside temps this unit maintained a CONSTANT 68 degree inside temperature. It would have gone lower but that is where we had it set. It cycled about every 30 minutes for a five to ten minute run. The sound level is no different than any other A/C unit we have or had. If you can get one like this I say BUY! Shipping and service from Home Depot is classical top notch. I see no negatives on this one!
