Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Need to drain it condensate. I've had this portable A/C unit for 13 months. After 1 month of use last season, it would fill up with water every night and need to be drained manually. The system is supposed to eject the water through the air exhaust (like other portable A/C units I own). I contacted the manufacturer (Haier) last summer and they sent a service tech that determined it was a poor design and there was nothing he could do to fix it. Haier then sent me a replacement unit which has the exact same problem. I've given up on Haeir and for now am just draining the condensate into a separate bucket which I need to empty daily. Certainly not "as advertised"! Also, as others have mentioned, the unit struggles to cool a ~150 sqft bed room and is louder and less efficient that the window A/C unit it replaced. June 30, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Misleading This unit claims to be an 8000 BTU unit, which should cool a room between 300-350 sq ft according to the Energy Star website. My room is 320 sq ft and it's not sufficient enough. The auto evaporate feature ... doesn't work. The manual says you only have to drain it when it's on the Dehumidfy cycle. Apparently not so. It's only ever been on Cool and I had to drain it today in order to get it working again. Even if this DOES rectify the problem above of it not cooling my room, it's not worth having to drain it all the time. The tank is small and will have to be drained a few times a week likely. I should have known that the pricetag was too good to be true. This unit is going back. June 27, 2011
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good for my shop but not sure about sleeping I bought this for my new 12x24' sewing shop since our window selection was restricted and price was cheap for a new biz. The hose vents out a 24x24" window about 5 feet off the ground and doesn't leak any condensation. Had this about a month and am now in the middle of a 40 degree Hdex heat wave. It does a good job but struggles to keep up in the afternoon when the heat wave is highest (but so does our central air in our house). As I use an iron and people are in and out, I don't expect it to be 100% cool, but comfortable enough to work in. I like the timer as I just put in on stanby and the end of the day and set the timer to start 1 hr before opening the shop the next day so it's cool when I open and doesn't run all night when I'm not there. It is noisy I find but enough to work through, but don't think I'd buy it for my bedroom if I needed one. Don't use the remote but do feel a litle bit of hot air coming from the hose where it attached to the unit in this heat wave. July 19, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Happy With This Unit My mother and myself were able to install this unit ourselves VERY easily. We are definitely happy with this unit, it works very well and keeps our second level kitchen/livingroom (open concept) area cool and comfortable on the hottest days so far. Ofcourse it helps to have all curtains drawn on the windows (which are large bay style windows). We have not had to "drain" anything as it instructed, only when using it as a dehumidifier should we require to do this. We've had it for a month and the ONLY time we thought it WASN'T working was a day we had a birthday party held here and the kids were running in and out of the main door (which is in the livingroom) for the full 3 hours the party was on. But common sense should tell you that when air conditioner is on just like Central Air you try not to expose the home to the outside hot air as much as possible! :) I would suggest this unit to anyone especially with the price...my brother was impressed with how well it keeps the rooms cool and he has a $450 portable unit in his home which does not work as well as this! Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by its quiet and powerful. definitely worth the money June 5, 2011
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Simple assembly, sleeping in the heat just got easier! The unit assembled in minutes, and with modified window adapters cut out of cardboard (we have weird windows, hinged at the bottom, pulling out from the top), the included window adapter made it a more-than-decent fit. The instructions are clear and straight-forward, as to the various modes, speeds and timers, and to be as small as the unit is, it delivers a powerful volume of air. It couldn't have been nicer, unless the remote had been RF instead of IR, and the 8K BTU had been able to blow as powerfully around corners into our den (we found using a couple of small fans and cracking a window open in the den helped pull it through better). Still in "testing" phase (we're running it "full bore" for the first few days, to ensure no warranty worries), it is doing what we were led to believe it would, for the investment made. A very good value for those in rental situations where a window unit is either impossible (like as with us), or undesirable and/or difficult. April 10, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works great with old swamp cooler Our house is long and narrow, and has a roof-mounted swamp cooler at one end. So of course that part of the house is nice and cool, but the other half is roasting. We just got the Haier 8000 BTU unit and placed it at the far end of the "hot zone" and the combination of both coolers running on low is keeping the whole house at about 75 degrees, and it's over 100 outside. It’s a simple and economical solution to a poorly designed setup when the house was built. One installation tip: the window I used to vent the hose is very skinny (about 15”) so I had to trim the mounting panel with a jigsaw. If you use a fine blade and go very slowly you’ll get a nice clean cut. Aside from that, installation took about 10 minutes and operation with the remote is a snap. July 1, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly what I was looking for... Once I finally got it installed - the piece for the window is a bit cumbersome - it worked great. My sons' room (according to the new unit) started out at 84 degrees and within 1/2 hour was down to 75. He had been using multiple fans in the room to try to cool it but it was no use. The unit makes less noise than the fans he was using before. I love the fact that there is no need to empty a water pan - we clean the filter every week and have had no problems. July 30, 2013
