Questions & Answers

Is this housing IC rated or insulated rated

Asked by: Jim
The Halo H995RICAT remodel housing is IC (insulation contact) rated for direct contact with insulation and it is AT (Air-Tite) rated to meet restricted airflow building code requirements.

What thickness ceiling do these work with?

We have an older house with wood slats above the drywall, adding additional thickness. Will these cans work with a thicker ceiling?
Asked by: OldCeiling
I have a 3/4" wood T&G with 3/4" drywall above that. While the manufacturer may frown at this, I cut about 3/4" off the ends of the retaining clips with an angle grinder -- then they fit perfectly and locked into place.

are these dimmable with appropriate led dimmer switches?

are these dimmable with appropriate led dimmer switches?
Asked by: Lori
This is just a housing, which doesn't include a bulb or baffle. You need to purchase a Halo compatible LED light. The light you purchase for the housing will determine if the fixture will dim. So the fixture will allow dimming if the bulb you install is dimmable.

They do not engage always, but you don't have a choice when it comes to remodel cans. A pair of button head sheet metal screws (on both sides of each clip) will lock them in. Screw the screws directly to he inside of the can from below. The can itself is good and the wiring access is good. Just wish someone would come up with a better system for mechanically anchoring these to sheetrock.

I've installed about 18 of these around the house over the last year. Installation was relatively easy, all are working without problems. I created my own adapter/connection/pigtail so I can but any type of lamp base in the fixture. I can use gu10, a19, etc. but I use exclusively LED bulbs. Incandescents or halogens would probably compromise the IC rating.

Note--this is about the only remodel can available for purchase that will work in insulated ceilings. City code inspectors will accept no less, so get these. They carry the IC designation and Air Tight, both required by city codes. And they work very well. Installation is not difficult, though removal is a chore (if you make a mistake). They seem wuite solid. They only work with air tight LED bulb assemblies.

Works with a number of 4" trims, but I recommend getting one of each to test before committing to a bunch. I like the built-in NM cable retainers and the easy to use connectors. Primary issues were 1) sealing tape was not applied very accurately (but was relatively easy to reposition) and 2) they were jammed in the box carelessly, so there were a couple dents. However, it's aluminum, so it's easy to coax back into shape, and they were easy to modify for thick ceilings (shorten the retaining clips) with tight clearances (remove the strap). Seen other people whine about them being 'flimsy' -- if you have to beat on them you're doing it wrong.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Proprietary LED connector First of all, the picture was wrong for this model (as of this writing).. Anyway, I was looking for a 4" IC remodel housing and this is the only IC-rated I could find. Unfortunately, it comes with the Halo's proprietary LED connector, which locks you into very few light trim and bulb choices. There are only two type of light bulb/integrated trim kits that could fit into this type of housing: one from Halo and one from Commercial Electric. Both of these trim kits are at 3000K and so I was out-of-luck looking for 2700K soft light trim kit :(. The worse part is none of these two fits well with this housing. The lips of the the trims from both kits would not completely cover and hide the housing lip and so you would see a gap between the ceiling and the trim. The Commercial Electric kit is the worse offender. After much time debating of what to do (aside from yanking these housing out and replace them with 5" IC housing, which uses standard Edison base that I previously had good experience with), I found a workable solution: using the EcoSmart 2700K 4" LED downlight (Model # ECO4-575L). The EcoSmart downlight is well built, gives out beautiful 2700K soft light, and its lip fit well with the housing and flushes against the ceiling. Since its uses the standard Edison base, I had to cut off and throw away the LED connector at the housing and replace it with a Edison lamp socket (which you can get for a few bucks from both HD and Lowe's). I am now a happy camper.. but do NOT get this housing, or any other LED housing from Halo that uses proprietary LED connector unless you are absolutely sure you can find a light trim kit that works.
