It is open on bottom. You'll access the mounting nuts by reaching into the bottom of the fixture, as well as changing the light bulb.

Answer:
It is open at the bottom. Bugs like inside of housing. I bought 4 units. 2 have broken plastic lens, and 1 photocell has failed, so that light stays on 24/7. The pin-type bulbs really suck - hard to re-insert. I rewired 2 of 4 to have a screw-in bulb, but these are the 2 fixtures with broken lens. I'm starting to look for replacement units.

operated via the photocell - on at dusk, off at dawn. However, the quality of the product (in my opinion) is low. Difficult to change or install bulbs, cheap plastic lens

You could remove the plastic lens and tape over the photocell, then spray paint it black. However, I was not satisfied with the performance of these fixtures and just replaced mine.

Answer:
Yes, the manual says it has a photocell. Ours is hooked to a wall switch and we HAVE to use it because the light rarely shuts itself off unless it is in direct sunlight.

Answer:
There is a photocell on top. You can turn it off with your switch, but can't turn it on until it gets dark (unless you cover the photocell). I replaced all of my lanterns with a different style. The plastic lens get brittle and break. The 2-pin bulbs are a pain to replace. Look for something with a screw-in bulb or permanent LED.

Rated 3.4 out of 5 by 96 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by don't recommend Installed light - but does not work. We will be selecting an alternative light. October 18, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Do Not Install in Direct Sunlight Purchased two about 3 years ago. One installed on porch out of direct sunlight. This light has worked fine for the three years and the plastic lens is intact and as new. The second light was installed next to the porch where the sun hits. The sun embrittled the plastic lens. I touched the plastic to wipe away a cobweb and the plastic shattered into many pieces. Other reviewers have noted the same problem. October 14, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good lamp, disappointing light bulb Read the info carefully. This lamp needs a very specific light bulb. It works in the space I have, gives off great light as well as the dusk-to-dawn feature is perfect. Just wish it used a "normal" bulb. October 18, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Low Profile and Light Fine. The Photocell STINKS. Crazy two prong bulb vibrates out. We have two. I think most people would purchase this light for the same reasons we did. They need a low profile light that looks good and turns off automatically at dawn until dusk. This light looks great. The light is enough. But the photocell sensor does not work unless in direct sunlight and the two prong light bulb can vibrate out even from the opening and closing of our door. I am rating the Quality and Value poor because the light does not perform in all ways as advertised. September 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just what we wanted The light was just perfect for the place we needed it to be in and was easy to install. Works great. September 20, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't waste your time Cheap and plan to replace it right away. Does not function as described September 18, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by These are Terrible Sure these lights look nice and come on when I want them to, that is where my satisfaction ends. Whoever decided to design these lights with a GU24 bulb may not be a complete idiot but they were having a very bad day. We hung 4 of these lights on our garage, after the 1st day they were up I had already replaced 2 bulbs. The lights have been up for about a month now and I am almost through a ten pack of bulbs. The reason being if you walk by these lights at a brisk pace the bulb loosens, it is ridiculous. If you are an avid light bulb replacer or own stock in a lightbulb manufacturer these are the lights for you. If not keep looking these lights suck. June 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Gorgeous Light! I bought two...see pics...and they are very easy and fast to install. They are beautiful and having the auto light sensor to turn them on is great. March 26, 2016
