Lights turn on and off every few minutes

This question is from 12-Volt Low-Voltage 300-Watt Transformer
Asked by

I have owned this transformer for 5 years. It has worked excellent for me in that time without any problems. I keep it on the timer setting for 6 hours when the daylight ends and the photocell will turn the landscape lights on. In the past week, the transformer will not stay on for more than 2 minutes at a time. Once it turns off, it resets back on after about 30 seconds off. I tried to cover the photocell with electrical tape to make it seem like it is consistently dark, but the "on" and "off" continued to occur. When I leave the transformer on "O" or "on", the transformer keeps the lights on. However, this will be a challenge if I have to manually turn the light and off everyday.

Can you help explain to me what is going on with my transformer.

Thank you

Answer:
If the transformer works when on all you need to do is add an outdoor timer to the transformer and it will act as the timer does in the system, no need to replace the transformer.

Answer:
Hi Vern, as another user said, it is not recommended to use an extension cord with the product. You can do it and it will work, but it may cause damages to your transformer after a while.

Would this unit work for LED's?

This question is from 12-Volt Low-Voltage 300-Watt Transformer

My unit runs approx. 200w of landscape halogen lights (10 - 20w lights). if I convert to LED, the total would be about 40w-60w. Would this unit operate the 12v LED's as good as the halogens? I know it's a bit of overkill with the 300w capacity.

Answer:
Hey kew824,
As long as the LED's are low voltage as well, then this transformer will work just fine.
It never hurts to go over the wattage capacity for your transformer, since that means you can always add more lights in the future without worrying about overloading the system!

Answer:
Not sure of the terminology "leg," but if you mean two separate connections for two separate sets of wires/strands, the answer is no: can accept only one, two-stranded low voltage cable, so all lights connected to the unit are either all on, or all off. No separate "station" settings like you can do with a sprinkler controller, for example.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by best purchase ever love this product. absolutely makes my yard light up amazing. have received so many wonderful compliments. thanks home depot! July 3, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works great!! I got this one to replace an older one that ants had moved into and caused it ti short out. I decided on this one after reading unfavorable reviews on the similar model made by Malibu. I like that this one has the photocell eye built in and not on the end of a long cord. Installation couldn't have been easier. Have had it for a few weeks now. Runs great! Really like the simple controls and the auto dusk to dawn setting. June 4, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by More Features than Expected I am impressed, not only with the solid construction, but with all the features that allow me to control when the lights turn on and off. January 26, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by 300 Watt Hapton Transformer Had auto feature that only allowed to be programmer to come on at dusk rather than specific hours. If weather got cloudy it thought it was dusk. November 3, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Product! Very easy to install. Instructions were easy to understand. Unit is rather heavy and appears to be well made. Photo cell with timer is a nice feature. September 8, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Less Than One-Year and the Photo Eye Settings No Longer Work Bought this due to the reviews and the built-in photo sensor feature instead of the corded sensors on the Malibu transformers. Installed it this past spring and it will no longer work except when it's set to the "ON" setting (where it runs 24/7). So tired of having to deal with equipment than just won't last and stand the test of time - especially when that test of time is less than 6 months!! September 16, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Transformer. We had tried 2 other transformers from Lowes and had to return them. When we got this one from Home Depot, we immediately noticed is was sturdier than the others. No problem hooking it up and it works great. It even had a lower price than the other ones. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent 12V Transformer This is the second Hampton Bay transformer that I purchased to replace old ones(not Hampton Bay) that had worn out. They are so easy to install and maintain. I've had the first one about 2 years and never touch it, except to change the number of hours the lights are on and I only do that a couple of times a year. I can't wait for my last one to wear out, so that I have all of them Hampton Bay transformers. Easy to order online and no shipping costs. You can only get these online and with free shipping is a great purchase. Home Depot should carry them in their stores as these are FAR superior than the in store transformers. September 23, 2014
