This is an attractive light fixture. I was a bit dissapointed that the diffuser is plastic instead of glass. Although the price would have been higher and the fixture much heavier. It took me about an hour total to install it myself. I replaced an older fluorescent shop type light that came with the house. This fixture puts out good clean light and replacement bulbs are readily available as well as affordable. I saw this first at a hair salon, they look great in both commercial and residential applications.

This fixture was installed in a condo I purchased. When the ballast died, I tried in vain to replace it. Apparently the company which makes the ballast (White Horse) decided not to make them the same way. Now the leads are not long enough and there are no fittings on the end to clamp onto the circular flourescent bulb, rendering my unit useless (I included a picture of the original ballast lead fittings, but the company no longer makes them that way).
I tried three different lighting specialty companies in town (the ones the contractors use) and two online lighting companies. Home Depot and Lowes didn't stock the ballast, which I don't understand. That's as bad as not selling the right sized light bulbs for the fixture. Hampton Bay needs to have a conversation with White Horse or there will be a lot of these fixtures on the shelves. I would not recommend this fixture to a friend because of the inability to purchase a replacement ballast.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by handy205 Nice light but weak ballast
As noted in many other reviews, this light is attractive and provides very good light, but the electronic ballast is less reliable than expected. My first ballast failed after 9 months. Since it was not available at Home Depot locally, I ordered a replacement directly from the manufacturer - Sunpark Electronics - for $14. The second ballast failed after 5 years. Since it is inconvenient to be without the primary kitchen ceiling light for the time required to order another replacement, we decided to change the entire fixture. We selected a different design that does not depend on a key part that is easy to replace but not readily available.

I bought 2 of these for my family room about 8 years ago. They were pretty easy to install; I just put some plastic screw anchors into the sheet rock. The frame around the light is held up by 4 small round nuts and it took me several bulb changes to get the knack of putting it back together. The ballast on one died after about 6 years and the ballast on the other just started going bad. As others have pointed out, Home Depot does not stock replacements, but Amazon does and they don't cost must. The fixture takes 2 Circline bulbs, which are widely available.

No, look for something better. These were in a home we purchased, with a newly remodeled kitchen. The bulbs only last for about 9 months, and now the ballasts are going out - works/doesn't work. They are between 2 and three years old.
Also - not enough light. There are three fixtures in a 7x12 space with a total of 6 round fluorescent bulbs, and it never seems brightly lit. Also the bulbs are around $8, so that is $64 a year just to buy the bulbs.

Really a good light. Easy to install. Got plenty of predrilled holes for hanging it to the ceiling joists or ceiling box, I used the holes for the ceiling box and that's all I needed. Plenty of bright light.

This is a pretty fixture on the outside and and piece of junk on the inside. Ballast went out on us in less than a year and now we have to pay for a new one. Our mistake is that we bought it with a gift card and didn't keep the receipt ... how dare we trust that such an expensive light fixture is going to go out in less than a year !!! what were we thinking??? be carefull if you buy this Hampton Bay item.
