That's how it appears in one of the photos posted on this website. I've never seen this unusual feature on a fountain.

Answer:
Hi BimboKay,
The motor in the submersible pump is insulated and the electrical cord is jacketed to safely provide power to it. All of our submersible pumps are powered this way.
It is safest to plug them into a Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) outlet.

This is a good Home Depot replacement pump that is close to the specs of the pump that comes with the fountain (Model # MD11130 140-GPH). You can use the next level up (Model # MD11300 300-GPH), I have this pump and it works great. Read Less

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Beware This is the second one I brought from Home Depot , it came crack and it leaks.... No good product. April 23, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not a good product I received this fountain for Christmas last year. I spent all last summer trying to figure out where it was leaking water from. I still don't know what is wrong with it. I have it on a cement base and it keeps leaking and the base is wet all the time. I have to fill the fountain twice a day. The material also chips very , very easy. March 25, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful 1st year ONLY Our fountain was so lovely but after one year it crumbles and is litterally falling apart. Do NOT buy this!!!!!! March 20, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by I've had my fountain for a few years now This is a really good fountain but you have to store it in the winter months. I take mine down in sept. and put it out the end of april. March 9, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Loved it at first... This fountain was beautiful until the winter when we put a birdbath heater. Cracked and crumbled to pieces and this is the mildest winter we've had in northern Ohio. I realize heat against cold causes expansion, but the material in this advertises durability, and the heater is only warm enough to keep water from freezing. Also, piece in bottom basin doesn't stay put, so filter clogs with debris quickly. We remedied this by tying a piece of flexible screening over the opening. So sad. January 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Second Fountain, Still as Nice This is the second fountain of this type I have purchased at Home Depot. During a period where I was unable to clean the fountain for about six weeks (due to hand surgery), it got badly stained and no amount of scrubbing got the stain off! I usually clean it every two weeks and I also add a clarifier to the water (bird safe) that I put in the fountain. So make a note about that, you want to keep on top of cleaning it. One word of caution. I don't think you can order these online, and you wouldn't want to; they had to open three boxes before I found a fountain that was not broken. I live in southern California and don't have to worry about freezing temperatures at night, or any sort of winter weather that can damage these, but you would want to take the other reviews into consideration on that point. Surveying the damage just in the box, I can see where they would crumble to bits in the wrong conditions. Fountain is extremely heavy, I get gold stars for getting it up one flight of stairs into my apartment, piece by piece, BY MYSELF which means, yeah, anyone can do it! Sets up fairly quickly, you do have to level the tiers to make sure the water falls evenly. Still love it. March 3, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by JUNK What ever it is made from withing 6 months it starts to crack then crumbles apart. March 23, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Fountain for the price, but you can't leave it out for the Winter. I have read so many negative reviews of this fountain crumbling and falling apart after a year or so. I noticed that most people with this issue left the fountain outside for the winter. The instructions clearly say that the fountain must be moved indoors during the winter. Draining it and covering it, but still leaving it outside, isn't going to stop the effects of freezing weather on something that was not built to withstand the freezing/unfreezing cycle of winter. This being said, and after reading so many people with issues with this fountain leaking and falling apart, I purchased a clear cement sealer and sealed the fountain. I will also be moving the fountain into the basement before the cold weather sets in. If this were an all cement fountain it would cost hundreds of dollars more. I will report back next year with the condition of my fountain. August 11, 2014
