Does the lamp plug into a regular outlet or does it need to be wired into power?

Does this mount with a 3 or 4 bolt pattern?

I am replacing a current lamp post that uses a 4 bolt pattern that is already tied into a cement pad - and I would like to reuse those bolts.
Asked by: philiplee
It has a 3 bolt anchor pattern.

can I replace the lighting assembly or do I have to buy an entire new lamp with post?

Asked by: Anonymous
I did not research part replacement because I destroyed the total pole when I backed into it with my car. For the reasinable cost of the whole unit, buy the whole pole and save yourself some possible grief.

Why wouldn't it work as a plug in?

Seems like i could easily hard-wire it into my house then cut a few feet from the end of an extension cord and attach it to the power cable, then plug it into a timer. Or, do you have a kit for this sold separately?
Asked by: John
I cut the female end off an outside extension cord and wired the cut end to the wiring on the light so I could plug it into an outside outlet. It works fine. I put light socket sensors in mine but I'm sure a timer would work the same as anything else you plugged into it. I bought a second one that I intend on plugging into a timer.

For some odd reason, Hampton Bay made the light socket housing on these outdoor lamp posts out of thin metal instead of cast aluminum like everything else on the post. Hence, if any moisture, heavy morning dew, or simple condensation gets trapped in between the thin metal sleeve and the light socket, the metal sleeve will rust out at the bottom leaving the light socket hanging in mid air and exposed to the elements which eventually shorts out. This is an obvious design flaw or lack of foresight by the designers, and an unnecessary Achilles heal that will severely shorten the lifespan of your 3-head outdoor post light. Unfortunately, there seems to be no replacements available for that thin metal housing once it rusts out. If anyone has found a solution for this design flaw, please let me know because it is shameful to loose the entire Hampton Bay 3-head lamp post just because of a poorly designed metal sleeve that cost less than 50 cents... what a waste!

We are getting 5-10 years out of it before replacing fixture but has proved to be more cost effective than going heavy duty commercial grade in our application.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleasantly surprised we were a bit concerned when we saw how small the box was. however the construction was excellent and well-thought-out. the cast aluminum is very thick and it was designed to make for a very easy installation. I would highly recommend that you install it on a concrete pad at least 12 inches in diameter or larger. when installed properly the lamp post is extremely sturdy. I like the fact that it uses a standard bulb base so you can either buy really fancy bulbs or regular style bulbs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice light This light is beautiful when installed. Easy to assemble and it all fits together easily. Everything is powder coated aluminum and should hold up to weather. I found it's really easy if you are doing this project from scratch to install 3 3/8 x 5" bolts into the concrete with the supplied template when you pour the concrete. Just leave 2" above the pad. I also installed conduit in my concrete for the electrical wiring. Another thing that goes really nice in the light are the 40 watt Edison bulbs Home Depot sells. They add a nice touch.

The only con is that it does not have a sensor for auto on/off, requiring the purchase and installation of another switch with timer or a sensor, then drilling a hole in the pole to install and connect the sensor. Although I am pleased with the way it looks, I would not have bought it if I had I known it did not have a sensor.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Should have been good enough Arrived quick and went together fine. Last price to cover light was stripped. This prevented me in securing the top shield on. Luckily I replaced the exact light with one that was damaged in a hail storm so I was able to use those parts. For the money it's worth it. Just wish the quality control caught this problem. Was not worth trying to take apart and fight the internet return process.
