Considering the wide variation in prices for electric fireplaces, the Hampton Bay is the best value for the money that I have found. The flame effect is very realistic, has a total of 7 flame settings and being able to have the "fire" without the heater on is an excellent feature, especially in warmer climates. In my area with higher electric rates the flame-only setting can run for about 6 hours per penny of electric usage. Of course, with the heater on it's much higher. The heater easily heats the living room area and it's great to have on those nights when it's not so cold to turn on the main heat, but cold enough that you want some heat to take the chill off. The heater's blower fan is quieter than my main heat, too.
I'm very skilled at assembling furniture and cabinets and this one went together very well and quite easily. One tip: use wood glue on all wood-to-wood edges for a stronger end product. Also, since I got the white finish, I was able to use latex window & door caulk to fill in the few gaps where surfaces meet to give it a very finished, factory-assembled look. The base of the cabinet is the same height and style of my baseboard, so I cut the baseboard such that the fireplace fits flush against the wall. Then I used the caulk to fill in the small gap between the fireplace and the wall. The end result is that the fireplace looks built-in and as if it had been there ever since my house was built.
I've seen larger mantels and fireboxes with even more realistic flames, but they generally sell for 2 to 3 times as much, or even more. Overall this was the best value. Also, some electric fireplaces use regular bulbs that need to be replaced and use more electricity even without the heater on. This one has a circuit board with LED's on it so there is nothing to replace and it uses far less power.
Other reviews mention that the finish isn't all that great. On the white one I have it almost looked as though it was merely primer paint. But, it's able to be refinishsed. I used the Bulldog product to prepare the surface, then painted it another coat in white using the same paint as on my baseboards. You can see in the photo that the fireplace matches the surrounding trim.

I love, love, love my fireplace!!!!! I am so very pleased. It's beautiful. This is a must have. The flames are gorgeous. I read the other reviews, but my husband and I had it put together in no time. I promise if you buy this you will be very happy. Thanks so much Home Depot for making me a very happy customer.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by NoFace52 excellent and reasonably priced
I read alot of the reviews on this site before deciding to purchase this unit, most people said that the heating aspect was good which is true, it keeps my room very comfortable, the one thing that made me hesitant we're the reviews saying that the mantles come warped and leave a noticable gap between the mantle and unit, i looked at the store unit and seen that there was a gap but decidede that for the price i could probably think of something to fix it, once i started to assemble i realized that the problem was that 2 of the factory drilled holes for brackets that connect the top and bottom were to close together creating the gap, i removed 2screws pushed down on the top of the mantle and rescrewed them into to particle board, problem soled, the entire assembly including unboxing took me about 30 mins. ,as for the people complaining about the fact thats it particle board, YOU PAID $300, you don't get oak or mahogany for that, and the people that complain that the flame doesn't look real, IT'S NOT A REAL FIRE

Rated 4 out of 5Â by Strawman Great look, inexpensive unit
Both the good and bad reviews are right, depending on your taste. There are definitely some quality issues - some gapping between the seams, and the paint isn't uniform on some of the pieces we were sent (although they do include a paint pen for minor touch ups).
That being said, it has a wonderful look for the price. It's functional and, once assembled, the defects aren't noticeable. If you're a perfectionist with your accessories it's probably not for you - if you're looking for a serviceable and charming if inexpensive unit, then you could do much worse.

Purchased this throught Home Depot's website. Item was backordered but it arrived in one piece. A breeze to put together, and it functioned beautifully in our basement. Love the white finish as it matches our seaside decor.
