Answer:
the cast iron chiminea is pretty heavy duty and tends to rust only at the attaching bolts, but a can of black high temperature grill spray paint will take care of those. Having had one for 3 years now, the only thing that rusted out was the ash tray; the rest of the unit is still in great shape.

Yea, ours starting rusting within a month. It has a Lil top on it that when taken off I can't even leave it on our deck as it leaves a rust ring. It is a piece of junk in my opinion.

I owned this exact model. The cast iron rusts slightly - looked cool and rustic. But the ash tray and ALL screens rusted and disintegrated over 4 years. The thin metal "faux bottom" that the fire sits upon when burning also rusted beyond use. That's outdoor kept 365 with no cover.

It is cast iron mostly. So yeah, there's gonna be some rust. Don't leave the ash tray in it. It is just sheet metal/thin steel. Take it out and put it where it can stay dry. But I don't think the rest of it will be anything other than a cosmetic problem.

Ours is unprotected outside year round on the bank of a brackish lagoon. It will probably rust but is very heavy cast iron and well painted so we expect oxidation to occur slowly. Very heavy, sturdy firebowl that was much thicker than we expected.

From the manual;
NOTE: The unit is manufactured with high temperature
paint. However, due to the nature of steel, some rusting can
occur. This is not a cause for concern and will not affect the
performance of your fireplace.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by LOVE THIS CHIMINEA This is our third such chiminea. We love having a fire almost every night (except hot summer). This chiminea allows for 360 degree viewing, with the top on, the heat radiates outward, creating a nice warmth, the mesh adds safety from shooting sparks, it elevates the fire to eye level when seated; just can't say enough good stuff about it. We've had three because all fire pit configurations, for the great amount of time we burn, will fatigue...with that said, we then re-use the top section as a pedestal to hold plants as with the bottom pan, it becomes a planter as well. It's a win-win all round. March 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Solid, functional, looks great! This thing is solid!! Very sturdy once assembled and looks great. Was a bit difficult to assemble, all of the nuts are metric and I didnt have a metric socket set handy, but once I got everything tightened up, it seems to be holding together very well!
