Hi Mimi,
Since this particular ceiling fan is a ceiling hugger, or low profile fan, it will not work with a down rod.
You'd need to use a fan that has a downrod already on it so you can extend it to the proper length.
All diameter downrods on the market today are 3/4", so just find the proper length you'd need.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 32 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great fan for small room Pros: Purchased this item on clearance. The price was excellent. I placed it in the sun room (13' x 9'). It moves air well and kept the heat off of the ceiling during recent cold snap. It is virtually noiseless even on high. The style is appropriate for this room and the size is perfect. Arrived on time. Cons: Installation instructions are not great. Went out and bought brace bolts only to find they were included, but not listed. WORST CON: Light is a candelabra base. Would much prefer regular base. January 15, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just what I needed I needed a hugger fan for a small basement bedroom with a low ceiling. This is just perfect, it's quiet, great looking & great price. I love it! November 19, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Fan is really loud. My son chose this fan for his room and was excited to get it put up. After waiting a a week for the electrician to come install it, he goes to check it out later that evening and says the fans is loud. Not only is it loud I can hear it from my bedroom down the hall! It doesn't matter the speed the fan makes a loud humming noise. We now have to take it down and return it because my son who can sleep through smoke alarms, can't sleep with the racket of this fan. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by You get what you pay for I bought two of these fans based on the user reviews. Out of the box, they look cheap. They are thin metal, clearly sprayed to get the finish. The glass is much thinner than the ones we were replacing. The paint job on the fan blades is poor. You can see areas where the dark paint ran over the edges onto the light side paint. The first one went up fairly easily. We turned it on expecting it to be nice and quiet based on the other reviews. Um, no. There is a high pitched whine. Seeing this is in a rarely used room and it wasn't as loud as the one we replaced with a bad bearing, we decided to leave it and hope you can tune it out. We installed the second one, which went much quicker. Turned it on and as it spun, it clicked very loudly with every rotation. The whole thing had to come down and get returned. After pulling the first one out of the box and seeing how cheap it was, it did not surprise me we had one out of two that failed. March 1, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor design, trouble installing, made horible noise First portion of installation was fairly simple, but last three screws were VERY awkward to install due to poor design. After MANY attempts to finally get screws in, the fan made a horroble noise when turned on. Returned item. March 31, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great fan for small space! Put this fan in our bathroom and it looks great and is perfect size for the space. March 10, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ceiling Fans The fans are easily installed most home owners can do do this just remember to turn off the power or have a qualified electrician perform this for you. February 25, 2015
