Customer Questions & Answers

Can this remote turn a none-remote fan into a remote fan.

I found a 44" in Hampton Bay ceiling fan that I like but it doesn't come with a remote. Can this remote convert the fan for remote use
Asked by: katie
That is exactly what this is for,to turn a manual controlled ceiling fan into a remotely controlled one.Installation could get complicated if you don't have room inside your ceiling cover plate for the receiver unit which is roughly 1 inch thick by 5 inches long and 2 1/8 inches wide.

I'm looking to get this remote for my Hampton Bay Lyndhurst fan (item: 202435778) which uses these dimmable LED lights (item: 207175219). I'd assume that I can set the dip switch to dim/incandescent and then it should work fine, correct? Thanks!

Will this work with led light bulbs

Asked by: Eeyore
Yes ... and NO! You may use incandescent, flourescent or LED light bulbs per the manufacturer. According to the manufacturer the remote should only be used in the dimmer mode with incandescent bulbs. It is NOT recommended to use the dimmer function with Fluorescent or LED light bulbs. There is a setting (dip switch) to be made/changed depending upon the type of bulb you use. But highly frustrating: the $2 plastic clip that holds it on the wall... that place where fan remotes get returned so they don't get lost... is NOT replaceable. I've had kids break the flimsy 'arms'. I've had tenants break the plastic piece. And unbelievable but true: I've finally talked to HD, called Hampton Bay (which is made by HD), gone through fan replacement parts and eBay to find: THERE IS NO wall bracket replacement. It just kinda makes the whole project a waste of time for me cuz the remote needs a home. Come on HD, do you really want us buying a NEW remote, extracting the holder, then returning it? frustrating. I'll find something higher grade next time which has replacement brackets.

After the sensor on the original Hampton Bay ceiling fan went out I could not turn my fan off since it had been hard wired! Therefore this universal remote saved the day. Same design but in white & grey instead of the original black. Once the sensors on the remote and fan were synchronized it has been working like a charm. Of note the light feature on the universal remote does not have a dimmer as before. Fan light turns on or off only. Otherwise works like a charm!

I installed it into a Hampton Bay 24" fan without any problems...wiring hook up is very straight forward, and locating it into the fan mounting bracket was a snap. Instructions were pretty clear, you have to match up some dip switches on both the handset (transmitter) and the module that installs in the fan (receiver)....that's it! It comes with a wall mounted holder so the handset won't get lost. Perfect is a strong term to use on a product, but this things was as close to perfect as you can get for me.

I had to re-apply when my order was declined because of the "wrong address". The remote came with a device which I could not understand. I had to hire an electrician to use it. He did not need the part which had to be installed on the fan. He was able to get the remote to run by simply making an adjustment on the remote. For these two reasons I would not use your services if I could possibly avoid it.

All of the in-store controls (everywhere) required me to get out a ladder and replace the electric box in the fan (not my cup of tea). I had found the remote previously at another store and they no longer carried it. I finally decided to Google the remote and up popped The Home Depot with the best delivery time (most important to me). The price was good too. I have had the remote for a couple of weeks and it's working great.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Ceiling fan remote needs downsizing Appeared to be be just what I was looking for in a remote. HD associate said this would work with the fan being purchased at the same time. Got home and mounted the fan, connected the remote (noticed the packaging had been previously opened) only to find out the wired unit doesn't fit inside the ceiling housing. must have been the same reason previous purchaser returned the opened product. Wired control box could and should be a smaller size to fit in ANY housing. Save your self a lot of time (and money) and make sure the unit will fit in your fan's ceiling housing before you leave the store.

I installed this with the HB ceiling fan Glendale (AM212) and I had a problem with installing the receiver in the mount. I was doing it with the standard mount and the receiver seemed just a touch too big to fit into the mounting bracket. I had to call the help line, was told that it Would fit, and have some pictures emailed to me. The keys seemed to be to ignore the remote's installation instructions and put the receiver in facing down (rather than up) and to turn the hanger ball until the fan slips just a touch lower to give you the fraction of an inch needed to get the receiver in. Once installed though, I am pleased with it. The control is simple, the buttons are easy to feel at night when I want to adjust the fan in the dark. The buttons make a definite loud click when pressed and you can hear a definite click in the fan.

I looked specifically for a Hampton Bay remote that was compatible with the Hampton Bay fans that are installed in my house. Was very disappointed to find that this remote will only control my fans if I first disassemble and install a new receiver in the one fan that this will then control. If I had known that I would have bought a less expensive generic "universal remote" where it's clear that you have to install their receiver. I'm 70 and can't climb to the top of a ladder and work for a long time disassembling the fan, removing the existing receiver, installing the new receiver, and then reassembling the fan so I'm going to have to hire someone to do it for me. I'll bet that will cost me more than the remote. Why won't Hampton Bay sell remotes that are working replacements for their own remotes? Bottom line, buy a cheaper generic remote and don't bother with Hampton Bay.
