Answer:
That is exactly what this is for,to turn a manual controlled ceiling fan into a remotely controlled one.Installation could get complicated if you don't have room inside your ceiling cover plate for the receiver unit which is roughly 1 inch thick by 5 inches long and 2 1/8 inches wide.

Answer:
As an addendum to my last answer. Some fans do not have the physical space inside the shroud to hold a remote receiver/controller. You may want to check the space available inside your fan's shell to make sure the is sufficient space for the receiver. The receiver is 2.1" wide x 4.8" long x 1.0" thick (approximately).

Answer:
This remote [kit] does contain a receiver to add remote functionality to your fan. If the fan was remote controllable but you do not have the actual remote, this will work. If the fan never had remote capability the included receiver will then add that functionality.

No, this remote does not have the reverse option. If your fan doesn't have a reverse button, you will need the original remote controller.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice simple remote If you are a DYI'er then this is straight forward simple to install. If you can follow directions, you can install this as well. I had CFL lights on my fan and can't dim the lights, but the remote has a dip switch that gives you the option of using it for non-dimmable bulbs or for dimmable bulbs. I can't give it a reliability grade just yet because I just installed it last week (5-5-16), but so far so good. See the pictures for final installation - FYI: I painted the blades to match my 6 yr. old son's room decor/color (original fan blades are white). May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy Replacement I have had the fan for about 12 years. The receiving unit finally wore out. Unfortunately, the Home Depot in my city no longer carried the Hampton Bay remote kit. Some genius has decided to carry a generic model instead. I don't have a problem with a generic, but I would lose some of the original functions of the fan. I found I could order the Hampton Bay remote online which I did. The original estimate for store delivery was six days. However, the remote was not delivered for ten days. I then found out it was delivered from another store about 15 miles away. I would've drove to the store and picked it up had I known it. The product is great, Home Depot's logistics could use some major improvements... July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to install This is a great product for anyone wanting to get remote control of their ceiling fan. Took a few minutes to hook up, fit the little box on the fan unit, and close back up. Nice this, you dont have to take the whole fan down to install this. Just turn off breaker, then rewire to add the controller, and it's done. Good product. I would purchase this again. July 20, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Didn't work, wouldn't take back at the store This remote would not work and it was hooked up by an electrician. Since we bought it on line they would not take it back at the store and give us a store credit. Very agitated. They said if we took the whole fan down and brought it in too they would exchange it. Why would we take down a $300 outside fan that we just paid an electrician to put up to get a refund on a $30 remote control? This will be the last product we buy on line from Home Depo. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Important Add on for us While the fan has chains to control lights and speed, it's much nicer having a remote. If you have other Hampton Bay fans in the house be sure to change the dip switches Before installing. Otherwise you effect every other fan when you go to test it. July 21, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Does not fit Won't fit many HB fans even though documentation shows that it will July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Happy:) Easy install, simple to use and works great! Recommend July 12, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Don't like that there is not a dimming feature and also don't like that fan speeds up before it turns off Yes the remote does what is is supposed to do. It turns on and off the light and turns on and off the fan and it switches through the 3 fan speed. But in all honesty, I am just not in love with the remote at all. My biggest issue is that it has no dimming feature. So the light is on all the way or not at all. In the mornings or evenings too really I'd like to be able to put the light on medium. Plus i don't like the arrangement of the buttons. This could be just my personal taste and perhaps I'll get used to it but without reading the labels it isn't obvious to me what the button are.For another fan I had I had purchased another remote (different brand) and its buttons were stacked one above the other. And this just made more sense to me when I was trying to select an option. (As a side note - this remote is crazy appealing to my 18 month old. She would hit those buttons all day long if I let her.)
