The reviews said that you cannot use the fan separate from the lights. Is this true?
Why can't a previous wall switch be used with this fan?

If what you said is true in your response as an HD employee and Pro, I'm very excited because I want to by-pass the ridiculous "on or off" only design of that remote because we simply will not use ugly un-dimmable CFLs on a fan that nice.

Hello,
You can and will be able to separate the lights from the fan due to it being separately wired, as all ceiling fans operate this way.
The motor needs a separate wire since it runs in various speeds and the lights need to be on and off. Where it meets the ceiling is the canopy is where it will or won't be connected to each other.

The motor needs a separate wire since it runs in various speeds and the lights need to be on and off. Where it meets the ceiling is the canopy is where it will or won't be connected to each other.
Since this particular fan comes with a remote, and if you wire it properly, it will give you separate capabilities for fan and lights.
However, even with that setup, the wall switch can still be used. But if it is one switch there, it would override both lights and fan since it gives power to it.
If you break the wires and have two switches, then you can have one switch for the lights and one for the fan. However, your remote will override this.

Sadly the fan should not be used outdoors. The bamboo fan blade trim, the finish coats are not moisture resistant- you'd see decomposition of the finish or warping of the fan blades. Also, the design and metal work are so intricate and elegant, you'll be spending more time dusting, removing cobwebs, bugs and so forth that would love all the nooks and crannies of the fan. Your best bet for outdoor fans are plastic/composite blades, very clean and simple design to provide less hiding spaces for bugs and dust and make sure you get open light fixtures. One with a 'bowl' type light fixture will turn into a bug salad bowl full of dead bugs. Read Less

No, motor isn't sealed, the housing isn't protected, the hardware isn't stainless steel, the blades are MDF and will warp and start to droop from the moisture.

I noted it comes with a 4 and 6 inch down rod but I have sloped ceiling that are 18 feet at the point where the fan is wired in. Usually the wires to attach to the electric box are quite short would the wires on this fan be long enough to use a longer down rod and if so, is a longer down rod available separatly?

The pre-drilled holes aren't exact but worked. We did have to spend more time balancing the fan, though. The longer the rod, the more 'pendulum' effect if it's not balanced. Make sure you do the fan blade install spot on and also get an additional package of weights- we bought three of these fans and they all needed a lot more TLC on balancing but we nailed all three- just note that the weight kit provided was about 2-3 weights short of what was needed. BE PATIENT- do not be surprised if it takes almost three hours #to include breaks from the ladder# to balance one of these. One took 10 minutes- but one honestly took 3 hours due to the longer rod. Thank you for your interest in the Colonial Bamboo Ceiling Fan. You are able to use an extension rod, available at Home Depot. You are able to add more wire if needed by using wire clips or small wire nuts.

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 68 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful, but heavy. This fan is extremely heavy, so it takes at least two able bodied people to install. The only thing I don't like about it, is that there is no way to turn the fan/light on/off without the remote. I don't know what I would do if I lost the remote. Even though the price is pretty steep, the fan is beautiful, and I've received many compliments on it. It gives off a good amount of light, and the breeze from the fan is more than adequate. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Unique Fan This fan is unique in that it has its own distinct look which fits our decor. The fan was easy for me to put together and install. The only negative was it was missing some screws which I had to call the manufacturer and they immediately sent me replacements within a week. The fan has a remote that you can set the therrmostadt to automatically control the fan speed depending on the room's temperature which is a great feature! July 21, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Uniquely beauftiful ceiling fan Loved the look of the ceiling fan, and it was pretty easy to install, however cannot work ceiling fan with dimmer switch otherwise I would have scored 100% June 18, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fashionable addition Love everything about this fan/light combination with one exception. I would like it even better if I was able to dim the lights. Installation was really not difficult but I would advise you to read the directions all the way through before beginning. There are more trim pieces than usual and it is easy to forget something and then have to undo/redo to get it right. It is well worth the time though and functions perfectly. It did not even need balancing since there is no wobble even at high speed right out of the box. February 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great ceiling fan home depot has the best selection of ceiling fans online. it was really easy to search and fine what I wanted. This fan is awesome and is a show stopper. This fan was on sale and was price perfect for me. Also, I read the reviews for other buyers for this fan and realize that everyone was happy with this fan. We have a tropical/beach theme going on all over my home and this fan works perfectly. It was easy to install. The remote control is nice to have with this fan, its the cherry on top. The lights on the fan is bright. March 25, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Pricey fan and no dimming feature I searched a few sites for ceiling fans and Home Depot by far has the best selections available. When I came across this fan, it caught my eye because it is so unique. The bamboo blades and the pineapple shaped shades really make this fan. For the price, it should have a dimming feature. Also, the fan wobbles at medium and high speeds. Unfortunately, I'm a little disappointed with this purchase. January 4, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Pretty Good Looks Great! Electrician said it was really heavy when he installed it. It wobbles on medium & high so we can only run it on low. All the controls are on the remote, light & fan speed. There is no On/Off switch on the remote so the batteries will wear out and have to be replaced frequently because the display is always on. Overall, looks great, quiet on low, no real deal breakers. December 28, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A work of art with function The quality of this fan is outstanding. The cherry colored fan blade looks very rich and the yellow color that the pineapple glass gives off is very pretty with a wow factor. The only draw back with this fan is it does not balance perfectly. The shimmer begins at medium speed and more at high speed. Because each individual fan blade is custom fabricated with bamboo, there is an issue with unequal weight distribution and it needs fine tuning to balance it. Maybe you will not even have this problem if your fan blades are all equal in weight. I totally love the looks of this fan, I can live with this slight imperfection. The ambiance of this uniquely designed fan far surpasses any flaws. The attached photo may give the impression that the glass gives off a white hue but the whole glass is lighted up with a stunning yellow hue. There will be no regrets with the purchase of this fan.
