Hello Chris1952, different rocks, or pebbles, react differently to heat and you'll want to be sure that you get the right type for your unit. Pumice stones have the pebble-look and create less soot than the lava rock. They will also provide more heat output and reduce the flame size by 10-20%. Fire glass is also a beautiful alternate to use for this unit! If there is anything else we may help with, Read More

Answer:
Yes, you can use this on a composite deck! (I am actually using mine on a cedar deck with absolutely no issues.) The base stays as cool as the air temp outside. The heat that is given off, goes straight up. The only issue you may have is dependant on how close you set it near the deck hand railing. Then you may want to be sure you are at least 36" away!

Hi Mark, Yes this is safe. We recommend that you have an overhead clearance of at least 6 feet between the unit and the ceiling and to keep it at least 4 away feet from any wall. I beleive it is a fiberglass/plastic combination. It is NOT real brick. But it looks and feels like real brick. You won't be unhappy with the look it provides.

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 41 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by excellent fire pit There was no assembling required just add a battery to the igniter and a propane cylinder and you are in business. It's nice for cool nights out on the patio. May 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good product for the price Easy to assemble, works good. Easy to level with Adjustable legs April 26, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Very disappointed in packing I searched for the perfect fire pit for our gazebo--something not too low so the kids won't knock it over, something that had enough capacity to hide a 20lb propane tank, the right BTU, and affordable. Then I found this fire pit. I rated it low because of the shipping, packing, and materials it comprised of because I was very disappointed when it arrived. There were 2 huge chunks missing. 1 was clearly from poor packaging and it right on the top of the pit and very noticable. The second is on the door panel that hides the propane tank--because the manufacturer puts the panel inside the column where the propane tank goes without much bubble wrap and it just smacks around in there during shipping. Last, there is some kind of disfiguration on the bottom where I cannot tell if it is damaged or a manufacturer defect. If the fire pit had arrived in perfect condition, I would have given it a 5--but after the time and effort to find this, then spending $200 to get a damaged product I am very disappointed. To top it off, this is not sold in stores so I cannot exchange it and even then the thing weighs over 70 lbs without the propane tank (this is a selling factor so it doesn't get knocked over easily by children, not so much if I had an option to haul it back to home depot to exchange.) It also scares me that this thing may chip away more once it gets hot from being lit for a while. As far as performance, I have not hooked up a propane tank to it yet. I am still deciding on what I'm going to do with the chunks missing before I fire it up. May 28, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by CORINTHIN 30000 BTU FIRE COLUMN VERY NICE FIRE COLUMN--HOWEVER WAS DELIVERED DEFECTIVE--DOOR TO COVER PROPANE TANK WAS BROKEN---CALLED HOME DEPOT-- SAID THEY WOULD SEND A REPLACEMANT--AFTER A COUPLE OF WEEKS--CALLED THEM AGAIN--SAID THEY WERE WORKING ON IT --A COUPLE OF WEEKS WENT BY AND CALLED THEM AGAIN--THEY SAID I WOULD HAVE TO SEND THE WHOLE UNIT BACK!!--BY THAT TIME THE BIG BOX WAS LONG GONE!---HOME DEPOT SHOULD BE MORE RESPONSIVE AND NOT DEAL WITH VENDERS THAT DON'T BACK UP THEIR PRODUCTS---IF YOU BUY ONE CHECK IT BEFOR THE SHIPPER LEAVES!!! December 22, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by meh.... it works like it's supposed to, but the materials are somewhat cheap, and it didn't hold up to shipping. It was chipped in places and a corner on the bottom was broken off. January 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Gas Firepit There was no assembly required other than adding the lava rock and propane tank. We had it working within minutes and have been enjoying it ever since. It was a great addition to our patio.I wouldn't suggest ordering it online. It was delivered by UPS and was slightly damaged. The damage wasn't worth the hassle of returning it but I would have preferred having one that didn't have a corner chipped off on the top basin. July 10, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Patio Addition So far so good. Had delivered to the store and picked up from there. No damage to the unit, however the box was a bit torn. Tank fits nicely inside, no external hoses to worry about. Ignition works great, nice flame and good heat. Construction seems good so far, no issues. December 23, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Close to perfect The fire pit came in just 24 hours, even though I didn't pay for any special shipping!!! The product came out of the box in great shape and was very easy to set-up. The only issue I've had is that frequently the electronic igniter doesn't work properly. Often I need to try several times to get it going and a couple times I resorted to using a grill lighter to save the frustration. Other than that minor (but very annoying) problem, we love the fire pit! December 10, 2015
