Hi Gloria. I know it's been 9 months since you asked this question, but I thought I would answer you.
I don't know how high up the lights are above your head, but there are three bulbs on the fan, you might want to look at the different types of bulbs that are available. There are bulbs that produce a more natural light color, more of a blue tint, that some people find it easier to read under.

Gloria,
The CFL Bulbs that come with the fan are equal to 60watts in normal bulbs. There are three total. If those do not give off enough light you might be able to go to hardware store or home depot and show them what you are looking for and they may be able to get you different bulbs. You just want to make sure you do not get more then the 60 watts equivalent for each bulb. I hope this helps with your question. Read Less

The fan is very bright. The three CFL bulbs that come with the fan seem to be 60 watt equivalent and are very bright. The only problem I've had with the bulbs is that they don't work on a dimmer switch.

The various combinations of these factors are what make bulbs different from one another although they all have the same purpose - to make light. The Hampton Bay Indoor Ceiling Fans: Glendale 52 in. Oil Rubbed Bronze Ceiling Fan uses three 13 watt CFL bulbs, they are included. Although together they use only 39 watts of total power, they have the Lumens (light output) of three 60 watt incandescent bulbs. This makes the total lighting output seem like 180 watts of light. My Grandma says that that's more than enough for even the most tired eyes to see everything by. This lamp will allow you to read beneath it with no problem. Hope this helps! Read Less

Answer:
Hi Gloria, CFL's are compact florescent light bulbs. These are energy saving and last a long time. Each bulb in this ceiling fan is 60 watts. There are three bulbs in this fan, so you have a total of 180 watts of light. This should be plenty of light.

Yes to both questions. We have one on a 14 ft tall sloped ceiling. The Glendale comes with a short down rod, about 5 inches long, for typical 8 foot tall ceilings, but you can buy a longer one for a sloped or high ceiling. If possible, when you buy the fan, make them show you the rod fits your fan at the motor connection (the threaded end with the pin hole). Some of the Hunter brand down rods do not fit Read More

My ceiling slope is 12 / 4 { 12" horizontal, by 4" vertical). With a 12" down rod extension, (purchased separately) it gave me a 12" spacing from the tip of the blade to the sloped ceiling.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great fan for the money We have several of these fans. I purchased one today and had it up in the dinning room in less than 45 minutes. Purchased a drop rod and extended the fan 18" from the ceiling. Very easy to convert. Simple installation and wiring. Fan comes pre-wired with 2 feet of power wires. Lights put out plenty of illumination for the area. Couldn't ask for a nicer fan at the price. Puts out plenty of breeze. Looks nice. September 3, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Good Investment The fans look GREAT in the FL room. The price was right, and the installation was easy enough that my son and I could do it with out any problem August 1, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice fan, but installation was not the greatest This fan took way longer to install than other brands we have purchased--this is mostly due to the instructions not being complete and having to uninstall weird screws and things that just didn't make sense. Also, we did not use the extender rod so when we were trying to install the mounting bracket and then the motor, it was not fitting--we had to add multiple additional washers with the mounting screws to make it all work. Other than the ridiculous installation/poor instructions, the fan is quiet and does an excellent job cooling our large bedroom. The bronze with the dark blades looks nice as well. July 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ceiling fan i saw the product online for cheaper than it was in the store, but did not want to have it shipped since it was large and fragile August 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Buy! The ceiling fan was pretty much easy to install. The problem we had was with the wiring the builder had in that bedroom. There were half/hot outlets but we got it figured out so that the fan turns on with one switch and the lights with the other. Looks great and is quiet. The timer is perfect since this is a rental home and guests don't care if they leave the fans on all day. This way, 4 hours is tops. August 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy install This ceiling fan looks great and it was easy to install. We're looking at getting another one for a different room. August 3, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor Quality Did Not Last 1 Year Here's a review after using 4 of these fans for about 1-2 years. I would never purchase these again, all of the chains have broken off right around the year mark they are VERY difficult to replace. Also almost 2 years in after the fan chains have broken off now the light chains are becoming faulty. I would have certainly expected a good 3-5 years of use before any issues. The previous fans in the house were here for 10+ years and still worked, they looked dated so we replaced with these. They look nice but if you want something that lasts continue shopping.
