I changed the battery but it still isn't working. The light on the remote does not illuminate. What are my options? Do I need to purchase another remote? Would this indicate a poor receiver?

Is there a way to operate top and bottom lights individually?

I am thinking about buying this fan. But I have read that you either have both lights on, or both off. Can I switch the top lights on without the bottom...or vice versa? Otherwise, not sure what's the point in having 2 sets.

They are either both on or both off. They will both dim at the same rate too. I was hoping they would be independent but they are not.

Hi OxfordGirl. Thank you for your interest in the Minorca fan. The light for this fan is either all on or all off. The light kit is dimmable. The newer version of this fan is the Home Decorators Collection Chardonnay fan (currently only available in brushed nickel). That fan's light kit operates the uplight and downlight independently via the remote control.

Answer:
If you didn't change it on the fan part, the default for the 4 dip switches is all on. (that was the default in the remote too) If you changed them on the fan part & remote when you installed it, you'll need to take a ring off, unscrew 2 screws & twist off the dome thing that covers wiring. You might be able to see what the fan is set to & then match that to the remote.

Answer:
Hi Dave. The remote code is set by the dip switches in the battery compartment of the remote. You can set the switches to any setting and then set the switches in the receiver to match. The remote and receiver are shipped with all dip switches in the up position.

Replacing some existing hardwired fans with lights and do not want to use the remote that comes with this fan and light system. Will purchase 5 fans if we can bypass the remote receiver and hardwire the fans?

NO. That is the reason I wanted it so I wouldn't have to run wires down plaster walls. This thing is a bear to install though. The fishing walls would have been easier.

Answer:
Hi Rev46. You can bypass the remote as long as you use separate switches for the lights and fan speed control. Please note that we do not recommend using one switch to control multiple fans.

Minorca 52 in. Indoor Gilded Mahogany Ceiling Fan is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 122.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful, quality fan. Not the easiest to install. This is a beautiful fan and the quality is very good. There are no 'pull strings' since it is remote controlled. I am a little concerned about what to do if the remote control fails. This fan is not easy to install. The remote control receiver has to fit in a very tight space and since there are a lot of wires for the remote, getting all of them to fit in the junction box is a challenge. Also, because of the configuration, some of the wires will not reach the junction box and just fit in the fan housing. Not a big deal, just cumbersome. All of that aside, this is a really nice fan that operates quietly and smoothly. Really nice look, especially the way the blades attach to the fan.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful, but lights are not controlled separately. I got this fan that specifically says uplight AND downlight. It was installed and when I saw it I was so impressed, it is so beautiful. The remote control is a new feature for me and it's so simple to use. Also, it has a light dimmer, which is really nice. The downfall to this item, that completely suprised me is that the lights do not operate separately. I want to be able to just use the upper or just use the lower light or have the option to have them both on at a single time and it does not have that feature. I'm still looking for some sort of conversion for this product so I don't have to send it back, I love it, but I want that option. I would recommend it for it's looks and give it a 5 if it worked the way I wanted it to...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Big Disappointment We had this fan in our previous home, re-ordered it thinking we would be getting the same one. Absolutely not the same at all even though it had the same name for the model! It has been cheapened until it does not look the same at all, plus you can no longer control the top light from the bottom, but must have them both on at the same time. Very put out with you, Home Depot, and we've purchased from you for years!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not the Brightest Bulb... Aesthetically, this fixture is excellent. It has a very quiet motor on the fan; so quiet I've several times forgotten to turn it off because I didn't hear to remember it was on. One thing I didn't see specified when buying it is that it can only be operated with the included remote--at least that's what my electrician tells me. There is a switch on the wall that determines whether it's powered (and if not the remote won't work), but the switch is no good so far as fan operation. (With the remote telling the light to be on the switch will turn the light on or off. Basically, both switch and remote have to agree for the light to be on.) The light isn't especially bright. It would qualify as mood lighting, but not much more. Definitely not a strong task light. This doesn't bother me, but it could be significant for others. I'm using the included bulbs. Both pics are taken after dark with only this light on, but one uses a flash. I was trying to show how much light was produced.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Elegant looking and great value Looked at every store for a look that would blend in with the furnishings of our new house. Went online to Home Depot and found exactly what I was looking for. Most white fans show the motor and are cheap looking. This fan with the double light, hiding the motor, and the brushed nickle accents make the fan look elegant and expensive. Great value. The only thing was the assembly. Because of the design, the blades had to be put on first before hanging and was a bit difficult hanging with all the weight and size. But it was worth it. We bought 3 of them and they look great in the bedrooms and the great room which we added a longer pole.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very good looking but brightness of light inadequate. This fan is really great looking. However, the light globe is made of thick white plastic and let's very little light through. It gave a yellowish tint to the room. We had to go out and buy a light kit ($40) with a globe of white frosted glass. It wasn't easy to find but luckily we found one to fit and my husband was able to change the globe. We discarded the rest of the light kit. It is now awesome looking and gives off great white light. If you don't have the ability to buy a new light kit and change the globe I would not recommend you purchase this fan.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Dim lighting and relay click Like many others, I really like the look of this fan. They have done a good job at hiding all the screws and ugly parts of the fan assembly. However, there are several things that could be better. 1) The lighting is very dim. The bulbs at the top are a max of 15W and barely cast any light on the ceiling. The bulbs in the bottom are a max 60W, which is fine, but still not very bright for a 20x20' room. Maybe I just like a lot of light, but these seemed really dim. We ended up replacing the 15W bulbs with LEDs that were 40W equivalents. That was MUCH better. 2) The dimmer works well, but I wish the remote had an up/down button. The way it works now is that you push and hold the "light" button on the remote and then hope the light goes the way you wanted it (brighter or dimmer). When you get to the dimmest setting it immediately starts getting brighter again, but when you get to the brightest setting it just sits there. While it works, it could use some improvement. 3) As a couple of others have said, the wiring makes it very difficult to get the receiver into the correct position at the ceiling. There is very little wiggle room for the receiver fitting into its proper location. I suspect this is so that it doesn't rattle when the fan is on, but it makes for a challenging assembly. 4) The receiver clicks whenever you change the fan speed. It's mildly annoying, but was surprising to me the first time I heard it. Other than the lights being dim (which can be replaced with brighter lights) and the dimmer needing a better design, this is a nice fan. It's quiet, it looks nice, and it moves air well. I like having a remote and a dimmer option. We've had no problems with the light or fan speed memory (whatever we set it to when we flipped the wall switch is what it comes back to when we flip the wall switch back on). A few minor changes and this would be a really awesome fan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful I bought two of these fans & had to hire an electrician to install them because I found that part of it complicated. Also, if you are going to install more than one within a few yards of each other, you need to change the remote setting BEFORE you install it. Mine are about 10 feet apart one remote controls them both because I didn't read the instructions before installing them.
