How to turn it on? Is it "auto"?

I just bought six of these lights. I looked at the instructions and do not understand the part how to turn it on or off. I do not know these are "auto switch" or not, since there is no indication on the light or the instruction. I pressed the white plastic button several times, but there is no effect. The diagram in the back of the light is confusing. The looks of "on" and "off" positions are not very much different other than the width of the "button". If it is "auto on and off", then why is there this diagram? Attached please find the picture of the back of the light. I am placing them now under the direct sun light and wonder whether they will work. Thanks for your help.

Answer:
Ted, you have to set the switch to on or off in a darkened area because the auto off feature will keep the lamp from lighting in daylight or bright light even with that switch placed to the on position.

Look to see if the battery is making contact. Sometimes the manufacturer puts an insulator between the battery and it's contact for shipping. If battery is making contact the battery may be discharged. If the battery is completely discharged the light will not come on even if the switch is placed to "on". If battery is making contact the battery may be discharged. If the battery is completely discharged the light will not come on even if the switch is placed to "on". Let them sit in the sun for 6 to 10 hours to charge up the battery. After charging cover the grid (solar collector) completely or take to a very dark area to shout out any light. If the light does not come on push the switch on the bottom once. When it comes on remove to a lighted area and see if light goes off automatically. If it does you now have it set to go on at dusk and off at dawn. Good luck. Read Less

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 33 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It has a very good looking design I like the design and flexibility of the product. I bought six of those and one came with a cracked solar panel. I returned that defective one to Home Depot and received credit, since they do not have the same product in store for replacement. The instruction is poor regarding how to turn the light on. For example, the illustration in the back for "on" and "off" look very much alike (attached please find the picture). I had to open some of them to turn them on. I wonder how well they will last after being rained on, since the joining edges of the opening in the back do not look well sealed (please see the attached picture). The angle of the light is not easily to be adjusted to the desired direction. However, when it is, the effect is really nice. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Rockin' Rock Light We bought a few of these years ago and picked up a few more for our new home. They're a great inexpensive way to highlight plants, landscaping, etc. without breaking the bank. After about 3-4 years we replace the batteries and we're good for a few more years. April 21, 2016

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by I like! They work great and provide a good amount of light. June 24, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Rather disapointed. I purchased 2 to start with and liked them enough to order two more. However within a month 3 out of 4 started wain. You do have to provide them with as much sunlight as possible and I make every effort to make sure they got a full charge but 3 of the 4 continued to wain. I went ahead and replaced all the batteries but to no avail, 3 of the 4 just won't charge sufficiently even under the best of conditions. I guess the bright side is I now have a 7 year supply of replacement batteries :\ June 2, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Bright apots Very bright for such a small solar light. Not a large light, but bright for what it is June 7, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Be Careful Here Unit works well but it's much smaller then then its portrayed online. Maybe five inches by three. Use to accentuate very small shrubs and floral. Fine for the price. May 17, 2016
