My living room has a 15 foot ceiling and I want to confirm the reverse motor function can only be completed via the manual switch on the fan. I would prefer not to need an extension later to change the direction.

My old Sidewinder fan that was 10 years old had the remote on the wall, but the replacement fan I just got has a handheld remote. The new fan has the reverse switch on the top of the motor housing.

I see three answers that say you can't reverse the fan via the remote or switch. I have the fan. You can't reverse it via the handheld remote, but you can reverse it from the in-wall switch. I'm attaching a photo of the switch with the reverse button on it (and I've verified it works).

Having said that, I do not recommend this fan. We were never able to properly balance it. I installed 3 other fans in my house (I think all Hampton Bay) and this wasn't a problem with any of the others.

Answer:
Yes unfortunately this is a manual reverse fan. It does not come with a full feature remote control that would allow you to reverse from the handheld remote.

Hi Kelly, this sounds like this fan was hardwired, which means it was wired bypassed the receiver, and you turn this on with a wall switch.
If this is the case, you will not be able to reverse this fan. In order to get this fan to reverse you will have to have a receiver and remote.

Answer:
Hello Jag
The bulb used in this fan is what I would consider a speciality bulb. I have searched extensively but have yet to find an LED equivalent. I doubt that one exist at this time. Packing 100 watts into a small halogen bulb is possible but every 100 or even 75 watt equivalent LED bulb I've ever come across has been rather large.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 89 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great looks, quiet The fan looks great with its unique curved blades. It was easy to install. I swapped out the downrod for a longer 12 inch due to sloped ceiling. Its very quiet. The included light is pretty bright and in our 14 x 15 master bedroom, I barely turn the light up. Works well as a night light too at its lowest setting. The remote is simple, with logically laid out buttons and is easy to operate. No complaints here. July 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fantastic Circulating Fan The Sidewinder is an excellent fan. The first one I owned lasted 10 years before the motor burned out. It is a very nice looking fan and circulates air like a fan should. The blades are larger and there is less gap between them, than there is on other fans. We can feel the air circulating in the room very well. It is very quiet, has a bright light and a remote control that operates both the fan and light. The fan requires the remote control to operate it as there are no chains for the fan and light like other fans. The light can be operated by the remote or the light switch on the wall. I cannot comment on ease of installation because the electrician installed it, however it was put together and installed in a relatively short period. I didn't look at the clock, but it was probably 1 1/2 to 2 hours time. August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Fan for a Cowboy Fan !!!!! Only had this fan up for one day now, so this review will lack long term use. I have installed over a dozen fans and this one was bit harder than most. Tightening the two small shoulder screws to hold up the canopy was a bit challenging as there is not much room between the canopy and the top hood cover on top of the motor. I had to use just a screwdriver bit and a short holder that fits a drill and use my fingers. If you are installing a longer down rod then you could use a normal screwdriver. Attaching the blade arms to the motor is also tedious as you only a small window to insert the mounting screws one at a time as you are trying to hold the blade in position while you are fighting gravity. Once installed though, I love this fan. It looks awesome, build quality is very good, the light is bright (100 watt halogen) and really illuminates the bedroom and I love how the light will dim as you continue to hold the light button on the remote. This fan is quite and will really move the air too. Be sure you go and buy an A3 battery for the remote before you install the fan, because it is not included in the box. ( you would think they would include the battery for a fan of this cost ) I wired it to just a on/off wall switch, so once the light is turned on by the remote, I can turn the light on and off with the wall switch and it will keep whatever the light level the fan was dimmed at the same level. The other thing I wished it had was the ability to reverse the direction of the fan from the remote. It has switch on top of the motor to do that, but it will reverse. Just not handy. April 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks Great I didn't do the installation, but at first the fan ran practically silently. After about 3 days it developed a "ticking" sound like something had come loose and was hitting the housing as the blades rotated. The contractor came back out and adjusted the fan, and now runs silently again. Looks great, especially with the 24" brushed nickel down rod I purchased. August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Pretty and functional, has flaws The fan is beautiful and the air it moves it quite impressive. However, the light comes on all by itself as does the fan. August 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful!!! Looks beautiful and moves a lot of air. Fantastic value, we love this fan. August 9, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent purchase . The installed fans are very attractive and do a great job. The only small issue i have is that both fans emit a slight humming noise when on, otherwise we are very happy with the quality and performance of the fans. July 19, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Lots of wind Best air circulation I've ever seen in a ceiling fan. Light not very bright. Not an easy instal at all. Be prepared to use many more hours than intended installing this fan. June 22, 2016
