Wall Switch

Does the fan need a wall switch to control the unit or can it operate with the standard pull chains to control the light and fan independently? I want to replace an old fan that is hard-wired to the ceiling but I don't have a wall switch to control it. If not, is there a similar model that does not require a wall switch?

Answer:
This fan REQUIRES the light switch, there are no pull cords & no remote. The fan has a mechanism that must be coded to match the wall switch so in theory, you may be able to get a remote & pair it to than, bypassing the need for the wall switch. I don't know about the other models.

Awesome Fan! NO pull chains though. I believe it came with a remote, however I installed 8 fans (2 Sidewinders) in all and I can't remember for sure. I did not deploy the remote option because the unit comes with a very good wall switch. It controls speed, direction and light. Also dims lighting and can control multiple Sidewinders from any one switch location, and that was the option that worked best Read More

If that is the case for you, use this tip. Get a second person to hold the motor assembly, the part that doesn’t rotate – not the fan blades – while you grab the glass globe and turn. The globe might be quite tight, but only about a quarter-turn is needed. Here’s a second tip: When you reassemble the globe, notice where the installation pins mate with the track. Apply a very small amount of high quality non-flammable lubricating grease to the pins and track to make it easier next time. Read Less

This fan can be used with nearly any size downrod; however, it come with only two, a normal 12 inch down rod and another one a little bit smaller.

Yes! I have two Sidewinders in my living room, both on 12" down rods. My local HD has 12", 18", 24" & 36" rods in the store. They don't have every finish though, so I ordered mine from HD on-line.
JFYI.. I love my sidewinder fans!

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 58 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Fan Really like the fan. Looks great in our family room. Works great. Thought it came with an "actual' remote, but it is really a wall switch where you can control the fan and light - works well though. Installation of the blades was a little difficult though, you have to screw in the blades through a little slot on the motor. It didn't specify this in the directions. May 10, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Looking and Excellent Quality I bought this Hampton Bay Sidewinder Ceiling Fan for our downstairs family room. It took the place of a very contemporary three blade nickel ceiling fan which I moved to our game room upstairs. I looked at a ton of fans but chose this one because it came in oil-rubbed bronze, came with an in-wall remote, and it appeared to fit well in 8 foot ceilings. Installation took me about two hours but that included taking down the current fan. I've done over 50 fans over the years and did not find anything unusually challenging with this one. I used the 4 inch downrod which made it a tight squeeze when it came to the wiring. I also had a fair amount of wobble when I first turned on the fan. I took the blades off and put them back on in a different order and that solved the problem. I really love this fan. It compliments our transitional décor and moves a ton of air. I also love having the reverse on the wall remote. The only negative thing I can say is the light bulb. I've switched about 70% of our lights to LEDs. The bulb for this fan uses 100 watts. I can turn on 10 LED bulbs and still use less watts than this one. I was aware of that when I made the purchase so it obviously wasn't a deal breaker. At any rate, I love the fan and I'm happy with this purchase. March 6, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Love the look of this fan! This fan looks so contemporary, but really kicks up the wind. My only complaint was the glass globe was cracked, but it was replaced by Home Depot in a couple weeks. My contractor did not complain about installation, so I'm assuming it was good. I like the switch for the wall with independent controls for the fan and light (dimming capable too) -- that was a nice bonus, is easy to use and looks great. Overall, extremely happy with this fan. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great apprearance and functionality I purchased 7 of these fans, work great, however one of the recent fans is defective in the way it was wired and needs to be returned for a replacement. I like the permanent mount fan control in the wall switch. December 15, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very nice fan. exactly what I was looking for. The fan didn't come with a long enough ceiling extender so I had to go buy one from Home Depot. Other than that it is great. July 8, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent quiet fan, but see installation tip I’m very fussy about mechanical things. So when I say this fan is quiet, it is absolutely dead quiet on low. No sound, no motor hum. On Medium and High, all you hear is the air rushing. I don’t think you could buy a better quality fan at any price. The remote control, which is the type that you install in the electrical box to replace an existing light switch, works perfectly. It controls fan speed, forward-reverse for winter use, and light dimming. The 100w halogen bulb included is bright for lighting a table or space below the fan, but the light shines down, so it doesn’t provide much light to the surrounding area. Installation took several hours. The instructions were clear, although I would expand one area: when you do the final installation of the blades, you must insert a screw up through an access hole to get to the blade. I could not have done it without my screwdriver with the clip on the end that holds the screw onto the tip of the driver while inserting it into the access hole. Also, be prepared that the receiver of the remote which gets installed into the canopy at the top of the hanging rod is a tight fit and took some time to maneuver into place. But the fan is beautiful and works perfectly and is well worth the time spent in the installation. September 30, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks great! It looks awesome in our bedroom. Wasn't hard for Husband to put up either. Very bright light May 21, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Really nice fan Nice fan. If your house is wired correctly the installation is no harder than a normal fan. hiding the remote under the housing is a bit tight. If the blades rub at the globe just tighten the bolts a bit more and they straighten right out, no problem. September 22, 2015
