Can LED bulbs be used ?

Can a LED bulbs used in this fan
Asked by: Jag
I have not been able to find LED bulbs which fit the mini-candelabra base or are small enough to fit in the very tight housing. There is also a general heat-dissipation issue with using LEDs in such a tightly-enclosed housing (halogens love that heat at the bulb, which actually makes it emit more light; LEDs have electrical components which will degrade over time and fail far too early if in an enclosed space like this). If you could physically fit an LED in there (and there are mini-candelabra-to-candelabra base converters which you could then screw a candelabra base LED into, but such a contraption ends up being really bulky), then you would likely have to change the bulb out far earlier than you would want to due to the LED components overheating and failing. Probably not an option, but you could leave the globe off and operate with a "bare" LED bulb in the fixture, which would yield a bit brighter light directly below and less light dispersed in the room. And of course would be pretty ugly. So, I'd say no. You are stuck with the 100W halogen bulb, which puts out light equivalent to a ~140W standard tungsten bulb would if such a beast existed. Also the airflow per watt on this fan is very low (~80 CF/Watt, operating at 78W on high, compared to others which push more air at ~35-40W on high), so if you are concerned with energy use I would look elsewhere. Qualifications: we have two of these in our house, although an older revision, which I am looking to replace with more energy-efficient models.

Can you confirm you cannot reverse the fan direction from the remote or a switch?

My living room has a 15 foot ceiling and I want to confirm the reverse motor function can only be completed via the manual switch on the fan. I would prefer not to need an extension later to change the direction.
Asked by: KO
My old Sidewinder fan that was 10 years old had the remote on the wall, but the replacement fan I just got has a handheld remote. The new fan has the reverse switch on the top of the motor housing.

Wall Switch

Does the fan need a wall switch to control the unit or can it operate with the standard pull chains to control the light and fan independently? I want to replace an old fan that is hard-wired to the ceiling but I don't have a wall switch to control it. If not, is there a similar model that does not require a wall switch?
Asked by: Hoss2112
This fan does not have pull chains and from what I can tell, it HAS to be hard-wired to the wall. The Brushed Nickel version comes with a remote but still needs to be turned on at the wall unless you're able to have constant power sent to the fan.

Sidewinder 54 in. Oil-Rubbed Bronze Ceiling Fan is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 173.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sidewinder - Oil Rubbed Bronze This is a beautiful fan. We also purchased the Oil Rubbed Bronze version of this fan. REMOTE vs. NO REMOTE Only the Brushed Nickel version of this fan came with a remote. The Oil Rubbed Bronze comes with a wall mount remote that requires a bit more work to install. Our existing light switch was a single panel with two stacked switches. Our options were to lose the switch that controlled an outlet or expand the panel box to be a double wide. We chose to do the double wide and had to hire an electrician as we didn't have much room to work with. Had this version come with a remote, it would have been an easier install. RECEIVER I have installed about a dozen lights / ceiling fans and it seems like the newest feature is extremely large receiver code boxes. These are about 2.5" x 5" and you have to cram this up in the ceiling along with all your wiring. LIGHT - DIM The light bulb that comes with the product is not extremely bright. It's fine for a bedroom, but if you're trying to use it to read / light a large room, you will probably need additional lighting. APPEARANCE / PERFORMANCE The fan is beautiful. The added bronze accents add a bit more detail to the fan blades. I love the frosted / tinted glass light cover. It's a bit more stylish than a plain colored glass bowl. It runs very smoothly / quietly and picks up speed very quickly. I like the dimmer feature.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from wouldnt work by remote after 2 years This fan worked by remote only, it ran fine for 2 years. It just stopped working so I bought new batteries for he remote, that didnt help. Noone at homedepot could tell me what to do, so I had a electrician hard wire the fan but not the light and that only worked for about a year

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pro install only! Very difficult to install fan blades, I'm a contractor who has installed many fans and this one you should not try unless you are a pro.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT AIR MOVEMENT Bought this fan along with a 36" down rod. This fan really blows some air. No movement at all, even with the 36" down rod. Quiet...doesnt make a lick of sound. On high, this fan really blows some air. Previous fan was always set on med or high. This fan is on medium when the AC is off, low when the AC is running. Highly recommend. Plus it looks awesome too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Sidewinder, well what can I say... I will tell you this it was a great addition to our Loft, i... My Sidewinder, well what can I say... I will tell you this it was a great addition to our Loft, in our freshly built home. I customized my Sidewinder to go with the theme "Deep Red" that my creative wife came up with. We had it about 3 weeks now, I like that it looks fancy & contemporary at the same time, a very quiet motor, & the remote control access. The installation was pretty darn simple, it took me 30 minutes to install. I would recommend this product to whom ever. The accessibility of ordering this product online was quick & simple, & the delivery time was less than 5 days.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful fan! I ordered two of these fans for my family room. I was impressed with the unique look and quality of the item. These fans circulate a lot of air. However, once installed, one of the fans was whisper quiet and the other one sounds like something in the motor scrubs with every complete spin of the blades. That was disappointing as we now have to completely disassemble the item for return. The online customer service gladly ordered me a new one to be delivered. I will return the defective one to my local store. I would still highly recommend the item. Remote is not the quality that I would have expected and does not have a reverse button. That must be done manually from a switch on top of the motor housing.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible Electronics for Remote System Shortly after purchasing this expensive fan. The remote or receiver failed intermittently. The code was checked and the battery; as well as, the antenna was checked . The receiver ( I assume) finally totally failed and no longer works, The motor has a lifetime warrantee but nothing else does. Hampton bay will not replace the electronics, it's up to the owner to re-purchase electronics that fail prematurely. Typically fans with pull chains can last 15-20 years or more. Add fancy electronics to them and they become disposable. Now the lifetime fan is worth nothing since it no longet works. Way to go Hampton Bay.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fan for a Cowboy Fan !!!!! Only had this fan up for one day now, so this review will lack long term use. I have installed over a dozen fans and this one was bit harder than most. Tightening the two small shoulder screws to hold up the canopy was a bit challenging as there is not much room between the canopy and the top hood cover on top of the motor. I had to use just a screwdriver bit and a short holder that fits a drill and use my fingers. If you are installing a longer down rod then you could use a normal screwdriver. Attaching the blade arms to the motor is also tedious as you only a small window to insert the mounting screws one at a time as you are trying to hold the blade in position while you are fighting gravity. Once installed though, I love this fan. It looks awesome, build quality is very good, the light is bright (100 watt halogen) and really illuminates the bedroom and I love how the light will dim as you continue to hold the light button on the remote. This fan is quite and will really move the air too. Be sure you go and buy an A3 battery for the remote before you install the fan, because it is not included in the box. ( you would think they would include the battery for a fan of this cost ) I wired it to just a on/off wall switch, so once the light is turned on by the remote, I can turn the light on and off with the wall switch and it will keep whatever the light level the fan was dimmed at the same level. The other thing I wished it had was the ability to reverse the direction of the fan from the remote. It has switch on top of the motor to do that, but it will reverse. Just not handy.
