Can LED bulbs be used ?

Can a LED bulbs used in this fan
Asked by: Jag
I have not been able to find LED bulbs which fit the mini-candelabra base or are small enough to fit in the very tight housing. There is also a general heat-dissipation issue with using LEDs in such a tightly-enclosed housing (halogens love that heat at the bulb, which actually makes it emit more light; LEDs have electrical components which will degrade over time and fail far too early if in an enclosed space like this). If you could physically fit an LED in there (and there are mini-candelabra-to-candelabra base converters which you could then screw a candelabra base LED into, but such a contraption ends up being really bulky), then you would likely have to change the bulb out far earlier than you would want to due to the LED components overheating and failing. Probably not an option, but you could leave the globe off and operate with a "bare" LED bulb in the fixture, which would yield a bit brighter light directly below and less light dispersed in the room. And of course would be pretty ugly. So, I'd say no. You are stuck with the 100W halogen bulb, which puts out light equivalent to a ~140W standard tungsten bulb would if such a beast existed. Also the airflow per watt on this fan is very low (~80 CF/Watt, operating at 78W on high, compared to others which push more air at ~35-40W on high), so if you are concerned with energy use I would look elsewhere. Qualifications: we have two of these in our house, although an older revision, which I am looking to replace with more energy-efficient models.

Can you confirm you cannot reverse the fan direction from the remote or a switch?

My living room has a 15 foot ceiling and I want to confirm the reverse motor function can only be completed via the manual switch on the fan. I would prefer not to need an extension later to change the direction.
Asked by: KO
My old Sidewinder fan that was 10 years old had the remote on the wall, but the replacement fan I just got has a handheld remote. The new fan has the reverse switch on the top of the motor housing.

Wall Switch

Does the fan need a wall switch to control the unit or can it operate with the standard pull chains to control the light and fan independently? I want to replace an old fan that is hard-wired to the ceiling but I don't have a wall switch to control it. If not, is there a similar model that does not require a wall switch?
Asked by: Hoss2112
This fan does not have pull chains and from what I can tell, it HAS to be hard-wired to the wall. The Brushed Nickel version comes with a remote but still needs to be turned on at the wall unless you're able to have constant power sent to the fan.

Great remote with dimmer etc. Installer said it wasn't too bad to install juts had to make sure there was enough room in the junction box with the dimmer/remote etc. Very quiet. Highly recommend if you want something with a modern updated look

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sidewinder - Oil Rubbed Bronze This is a beautiful fan. We also purchased the Oil Rubbed Bronze version of this fan. REMOTE vs. NO REMOTE Only the Brushed Nickel version of this fan came with a remote. The Oil Rubbed Bronze comes with a wall mount remote that requires a bit more work to install. Our existing light switch was a single panel with two stacked switches. Our options were to lose the switch that controlled an outlet or expand the panel box to be a double wide. We chose to do the double wide and had to hire an electrician as we didn't have much room to work with. Had this version come with a remote, it would have been an easier install. RECEIVER I have installed about a dozen lights / ceiling fans and it seems like the newest feature is extremely large receiver code boxes. These are about 2.5" x 5" and you have to cram this up in the ceiling along with all your wiring. LIGHT - DIM The light bulb that comes with the product is not extremely bright. It's fine for a bedroom, but if you're trying to use it to read / light a large room, you will probably need additional lighting. APPEARANCE / PERFORMANCE The fan is beautiful. The added bronze accents add a bit more detail to the fan blades. I love the frosted / tinted glass light cover. It's a bit more stylish than a plain colored glass bowl. It runs very smoothly / quietly and picks up speed very quickly. I like the dimmer feature.

Based on 3 weeks of operation, this is a quiet fan that adequately illuminates my master bedroom. My only concern during installation was toward the end of the hanging activity in seating and turning the two Canopy Cover screws to the Canopy Mounting Bracket. There is little room to work and little tolerance in lining up the screws from an underneath position.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from wouldnt work by remote after 2 years This fan worked by remote only, it ran fine for 2 years. It just stopped working so I bought new batteries for he remote, that didnt help. Noone at homedepot could tell me what to do, so I had a electrician hard wire the fan but not the light and that only worked for about a year

Arrived with a broken glass and one blade scratched. I called customer service and received the pats a week later which was fine. I had a handyman install it and it took him 30 minutes. We are very happy with it.
