Customer Questions & Answers

I lost the remote control. how can I get another one?

Asked by: Mannol
You should be able to replace the remote control in the store. Just go to where the ceiling fans are & there should be packages with a remote inside that works for the ceiling fans that Home Depot sells. Good Luck.

to install this fan w/ light do I need a 3 wire w/ ground?

Asked by: vince
You only need a 2 wire ceiling mount with ground. The junction box should be metal instead of plastic, but that is not hard to replace.

Can I directly hot wire the remote receiver?

I have a hot power line crossing through my studs directly above where I want to mount this, so I could easily install a junction box and run a load line to my newly installed fan box. I want to be sure this receiver box included is rated for hot power 100% of the time? To run a line to a wall for a switch to kill power would not be optimal at this time. Please advise ASAP. Already have two in my bedrooms!
Asked by: Customer
Thank you for your interest in the Southward fan. This fan can be installed directly to the house hot wire. It is not necessary to include a wall switch.

Customer Reviews

Southwind 52 in. Brushed Nickel Ceiling Fan is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 860.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty ceiling fan - does not give off a ton of light This fan is nice in appearance. Installation was a bit difficult. We had to secure the remote control receiver on the outside of the fan - where no one can see it. As it did not fit in the ceiling electrical box - under the mounting plate nor in the mounting canopy - as it described. The fan works great & so does the remote (with a dimmer). The only other thing to note: is it does not have a bright light. It's very warm lighting - but not enough to light up an entire room - you will need additional lighting. It is made to accommodate 2 - 120v (60 watt) bulbs. Not regular bulbs (as I was expecting). But for the price it is good and it looks great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Piece of art I am pleased to say that the Hampton Bay 52" brushed nickel ceiling fan is totally beautiful and is challenging at first to see all the parts included in the box but once you read all the carefully illustrated step by step instructions you'll have it pieced together in no time. Once it's put together and installed you'll be amazed at how easy it was to actually have had the skill to do it without any fuss or frustration. I am so proud of my ceiling fan it looks so wonderful and the ease of having a remote control is just a blessing (for I am less mobile) looking at my ceiling fan is like looking at a "Piece of art" that I created.

This fan is nice looking and we were really looking forward to the remote control since we have high ceilings and didn't want to have the long chains hanging over the bed to adjust fan speed. The manufacturer states on the box that this fan is approved for mounting to sloped ceilings. In our case, with 45 degree sloped ceilings in our master, it was impossible to align/set the remote transmitter in the ceiling mount and still allow the fan to hang true vertical. So we returned it and exchanged it for a fan similar to this one but with manual fan settings. The light and fan have their own wall switch. The light is bright so we use the wall switch to turn it on and off. We leave the fan wall switch on and adjust the speed via chain. If you have steep ceiling slopes we would not recommend this product. Disappointing that it wouldn't fit on the steep slope but Home Depot customer service was great with the return/exchange.

My only problem was installing the remote receiver in the fan. The wires of the receiver were too short. The instructions said to wire it and place connections up into junction box. then slide receiver into bracket. when I tried that the wires were to short to allow the receiver to be put into bracket. If I slid it into first it blocked the access to junction box to put wires as their instructions. So I had to place wiring connections around the receiver and install the trip cover. I used extra electricial tape to insure there would be np problems in the future.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Two problems aleady wihin 2 weeks of purchase. First phone call was for fan wobble. Customer service was great! Offered a free weight kit. Showed real concern. Second call was for remote inop. Again good customer service. Offered potential replacement part. I have been asked for this review before the part has arrived. I am hoping this will fix the problem and in turn work for a long time. As mentioned I've had the fan for two weeks. It looks great and I didn't install it thus two Excellents'. Its disappointing that I had this experience. There for I would not recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fans look awesome and are so quiet I bought these fans because they looked good and hoped they would be quality. I am impressed this far. I've had them up about two weeks. Installed them with the help of a friend (who knew a little about electricity). The fans run extremely quiet. I suggest putting them up and running them on high. If you hear a "click" sound very sporadically it just means the blades need to be tightened. I did this buy just removing the globe and giving each blade screw a tighten. They are the quietest fans I've had.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Most Dissatisfying Purchase From Home Depot A month after buying this product the remote stopped working. Lights and Speed of this this fan cannot be controlled without a remote control. (There are no alternatives). I paid a professional to get this installed. After talking to Hampton bay they have send me a remote receiver without any instructions. And I have no idea how to get it installed. Looks like I will have to pay a lot to the professional who installs it . I would never recommend this product to any of my friends or colleagues. The light in my master bedroom was replaced to install this fan and for the past one month or so I am adjusting with my night lamp.

I needed a replacement fan as the motor in my old one burnt out but it also was no longer made. I really liked the quality of Hampton Bay and settled on this model. It arrived well packaged and quickly. I hired an electrician to install it and they had no trouble at all with it. Now installed I like it even more than the old one and it is very quiet. I like the dark wood which matches the cabinets in my study. I would highly recommend this model and Home Depot as the place to buy it.
