No, the light fixture bowl is not covered. We have not had any problems with bugs on our ceiling fan/light fixture. It is very quiet and works really well for us.

Thank you for your question. The bowl is open as are most indoor ceiling fan light kits. Typically, the enclosed light kits are designed for use outdoors, but the Southwind is an indoor fan, so bugs and dirt shouldn't be an issue.

Turn the fan off and let it stop. Next, climb up on a ladder and flip the switch the opposite of where it is now. When you turn the fan back on, you should notice the fan moving in the opposite direction and less airflow on you.
You may want to consider the height of your ceilings and where your air ducts are located in your home. Heat rises, so with very high ceilings (15'+) you may want to leave the fan pushing the warm air down. Try it both ways and see what works best for you.
If you need help next Spring putting the fan back in 'downward' direction, simply follow the steps above again. Good luck. Read Less

Answer:
"During the summer you want the fan to blow air straight down, so your ceiling fan needs to run in a counter clockwise direction (as you look up at it). The warmer it is, the higher the speed should be. During the winter, your fan should run at a low speed in a clockwise direction."

Southwind 52 in. Brushed Nickel Ceiling Fan is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 770.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty ceiling fan - does not give off a ton of light This fan is nice in appearance. Installation was a bit difficult. We had to secure the remote control receiver on the outside of the fan - where no one can see it. As it did not fit in the ceiling electrical box - under the mounting plate nor in the mounting canopy - as it described. The fan works great & so does the remote (with a dimmer). The only other thing to note: is it does not have a bright light. It's very warm lighting - but not enough to light up an entire room - you will need additional lighting. It is made to accommodate 2 - 120v (60 watt) bulbs. Not regular bulbs (as I was expecting). But for the price it is good and it looks great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Piece of art I am pleased to say that the Hampton Bay 52" brushed nickel ceiling fan is totally beautiful and is challenging at first to see all the parts included in the box but once you read all the carefully illustrated step by step instructions you'll have it pieced together in no time. Once it's put together and installed you'll be amazed at how easy it was to actually have had the skill to do it without any fuss or frustration. I am so proud of my ceiling fan it looks so wonderful and the ease of having a remote control is just a blessing (for I am less mobile) looking at my ceiling fan is like looking at a "Piece of art" that I created.

This fan is nice looking and we were really looking forward to the remote control since we have high ceilings and didn't want to have the long chains hanging over the bed to adjust fan speed. The manufacturer states on the box that this fan is approved for mounting to sloped ceilings. In our case, with 45 degree sloped ceilings in our master, it was impossible to align/set the remote transmitter in the ceiling mount and still allow the fan to hang true vertical. So we returned it and exchanged it for a fan similar to this one but with manual fan settings. The light and fan have their own wall switch. The light is bright so we use the wall switch to turn it on and off. We leave the fan wall switch on and adjust the speed via chain. If you have steep ceiling slopes we would not recommend this product. Disappointing that it wouldn't fit on the steep slope but Home Depot customer service was great with the return/exchange.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Two problems aleady wihin 2 weeks of purchase. First phone call was for fan wobble. Customer service was great! Offered a free weight kit. Showed real concern. Second call was for remote inop. Again good customer service. Offered potential replacement part. I have been asked for this review before the part has arrived. I am hoping this will fix the problem and in turn work for a long time. As mentioned I've had the fan for two weeks. It looks great and I didn't install it thus two Excellents'. Its disappointing that I had this experience. There for I would not recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smoothest, quietest.............. This fan replaces our old '97 Hampton Bay remote reversible which was disabled by an electrical surge during a storm. Although not reversible by remote control, we are extremely happy with the product. The fan is the smoothest running, most quiet I have ever had. No wobbling, humming or rattling. Smooth as silk. Ease of installation was enhanced by the excellent set of instructions and parts that fit together perfectly. We are now considering this same model for replacement of other fans in the house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fans look awesome and are so quiet I bought these fans because they looked good and hoped they would be quality. I am impressed this far. I've had them up about two weeks. Installed them with the help of a friend (who knew a little about electricity). The fans run extremely quiet. I suggest putting them up and running them on high. If you hear a "click" sound very sporadically it just means the blades need to be tightened. I did this buy just removing the globe and giving each blade screw a tighten. They are the quietest fans I've had.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Most Dissatisfying Purchase From Home Depot A month after buying this product the remote stopped working. Lights and Speed of this this fan cannot be controlled without a remote control. (There are no alternatives). I paid a professional to get this installed. After talking to Hampton bay they have send me a remote receiver without any instructions. And I have no idea how to get it installed. Looks like I will have to pay a lot to the professional who installs it . I would never recommend this product to any of my friends or colleagues. The light in my master bedroom was replaced to install this fan and for the past one month or so I am adjusting with my night lamp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have purchased and installed four of these fans. I have purchased and installed four of these fans and love they're operation and quality look. They're in use 24/7. Installation is always a challenge but with a little cussing and using the 800 telephone helpline for any assistance, the fans are cooling my house as I write this review. The regular price is about $90 but can be bought on sale for about $65. I strongly recommend this product for an inexpensive solution to your home cooling needs.
