I believe you need the remote to operate the fan speeds and light. I would call 1-855-434-2678 to order another remote.

I ordered the white model for kids room and went with brushed nickel on the spare room. Install was a breeze since I have installed quite a few ceiling fans with remotes previously but let me say that this Southwind by Hampton Bay has been by far the best ceiling fan controlled by remote to date. I averaged about 45 minutes each fan from start to finish. I highly recommend this fan for anyone looking for a replacement or just as an upgrade. The finished look is very clean. Thanks HD for the fast shipping and smooth experience. This product is amazing and wife/kids approved.

In fairness, the fans themselves are fine and the remotes work well, BUT the lights are so dim we will have to install additional lighting in our living room and especially our kitchen. Two 60 watt bulbs should be more than sufficient for our tiny house, but the bulbs that come with these fans provide the dimmest 120 watts of lighting I've ever seen. I do recommend the fans if you don't need the lighting or all you want from your ceiling fan lights is a soft, warm glow. And yes, the dimmers are all the way on.

I purchased this fan due to it's low price, included remote control, and ease of installation I've experienced with other Hampton Bay fans. The biggest selling point for me was the included remote at such a low price point. I wanted this fan for my home office, and having a remote on the desk saves me the aggravation of having to get up and go over to the switches across the room. Hampton Bay makes a decent product. Quality is overall good for a budget product, their fans always look good and installation is typically less complicated than other brands. I had my fan installed in about 1 hour total with no help. You have the option of mounting it with the included down rod, of with no down rod, bringing the fan closer to the ceiling. The fan puts out a good amount of air for a small room such as a bedroom or office, although I wouldn't expect it to do much in a larger space such as a family room. The remote control is easy to operate and has buttons for fan speed, light on/off and light dimming (by long pressing the light button). Overall operation of the fan is simple and functional. There is also a wall mount bracket for the remote included. This is nice if you want to use it like a typical wall control. There are however some issues with this fan. First off the light is far too dim to be useful in any room other than a closet. It uses 2 60 watt candelabra bulbs which are no where near sufficient for putting out any real amount of light. I tried replacing them with 60 watt equivalent LED bulbs, which were brighter, but the dimmer no longer functioned, and still not quite bright enough for a small room. The real issue however is how noisy this fan is. On the low setting there is very little noise, small clicks and clacks here and there, however once the speed is increased to medium or high the fan becomes quite vocal. On the medium setting there are a whole bunch of clicks and clacks, metallic sounds as if something is hitting of scraping. On high it sounds like a small motor boat running. I checked the balance of the blades, tried inverting the blades, and moving the blades around all with no effect. Upon closer inspection there appears to be some scraping between the fan blades and the motor housing as if the motor is improperly seated within the housing. I've tried disassembling the housing and found that the holes that mount the motor to the housing were not drilled correctly. Unfortunately there was no way to correct this. I'm well past my return period, so I will just be running the fan at the low setting from now on. I can't say that my problems are indicative of this product as a whole. It's possible I just received a bad one and you may not have this issue at all. Overall for the price I paid and the features I find this to be a decent fan. The lights are too dim to be usable, so you might as well not even install the light kit. If it weren't for the noise issues and poor quality control, I would have rated this fan at 4 stars, but as it stands I cannot recommend this fan.

I bought six of these fans and they are clearly superior to more expensive fans (of which we bought and had to return due to fan wobble). The SouthWind fan is VERY easy to build, hang, and operate. NO fan balancing required!!! And they did NOT include any device or weights for correction. I bought the six more expensive fans (about $169+ and had lots of problems). I then bought the Southwinds and they went in WITHOUT an issue... Then I saw the add where within 30 days I was able to save about $18.00 on each fan.... I had hit the lotto!!!!!!!!!! Via Home Depot.... Ha! And I got a rebate on my purchase of the SouthWinds. I highly recommend this fan. A great purchase and a GREAT fan! I recommend you buy the fans! GB
