Is it possible to install windows and insulate this shed to make a workable outdoor office?

Asked by: hilarycole
Yes. Handy Home the makers of the shed have windows available. You could also purchase others to install. Insulation would be easy.

Customer Reviews

Montana 8 ft. x 10 ft. Wood Shed Kit with Floor Frame is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from This product is a Good value for the price The instructions have a few misprints in them and you have to be extremely careful when looking at the instructions because of this. They need to make it more clear what goes on the primed side of the panels and what goes on the unprimed sides of the panels. If you cannot find the size of wood piece you are looking for, refer back to the actual inventory product list as it may be a misprint on wood sizes. We had to purchase a 2 x 4 for the frame as the ones included were all the same size and one had to be an inch longer. It took about 3 full days to erect and roof, this does not include the painting. You ionly need 5 packages of shingles to roof this product not the 6 they claim.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good use of space It looks nice, but a little cheap. If your looking for a useful shed that will blend in and isn't an eyesore this is a good value. Overall I like the design and being able match the colour to my house (it has the same baton board design). It has good space inside with the high roof and loft. This is a bigger project then a lot of people can handle, but if you have reasonable experience with a hammer and patience it's not out of reach. It took me a good 3 days to put it together and another 1.5 days to shingle and paint it. Being made of wood there are a lot of imperfect pieces, but its manageable. Getting the floor flush and the walls straight before putting them together is key. Take your time here and read the directions carefully and the rest falls into place. Also being so high its a little tricky working on the roof. Budget an extra $180 for paint, extra 2x4's on the floor (they recommend this for heavier use) and shingling ( 4 1/3 bundles easy).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not what I had in mind I bought this shed for three reasons, it's a good size, it's wood (strong - theoretically), and it's all pre-cut, so assembly is all that's required. I have now spent the better part of the last 3 days (with some help) doing the preparation (concrete pier block foundation), and assembly. While it's not a complete loss, I'm disappointed with the finished product. First of all, this shed is very similar in design to another one at a major US-based retailer. I can't reference it here, but take a look for reviews before you make a decision. Here is a list of my beefs: 1. Despite including a floor, the "treated" wood provided would very likely wick water into the particle board floor if placed on the ground. 2. The floor is structurally weak, even with 12 well-placed deck/pier blocks under it - the floor surface is particle board. 3. Walls have no bottom plate and studs are 24" on centre. 4. Nails and screws were poor quality, I ended up buying better ones. 5. The instructions were cryptic in places and required a bit of trial and error to figure out. 6. Two pieces of 2x3 for the window frame were not included in the materials. 7. The door frame is not reinforced in any way. 8. No venting - will get very hot if in direct sunlight. 9. Substantial painting is required after assembly I read the assembly instructions on-line before I purchased the shed, but I guess I didn't pay close enough attention to the details. Make sure you factor in the extra cost for the following materials: - concrete foundation of some type (patio blocks, pier/deck blocks, or poured concrete foundation) - nails/screws - roofing felt, shingles (6 packages), roofing nails, drip edge (30 ft.) - caulking for all exterior seams (4-6 tubes) - paint - 2 gallons for walls, 1 quart for trim (and primer for exposed wood). Having assembled this shed, I would recommend finding some plans on-line or at your local lumber yard. After you put together your materials list, go price it out. You will get a much stronger and better quality shed with virtually the same amount of work. And if you're doing that anyway, go with 2x4 lumber instead of the 2x3s that are included. If you're going to spend $1,300 - 1,400 (all in), you should expect to be happy with the finished product. I hope you can learn from my experience. If you do decide to buy this shed, allow 3-4 days for construction, including the foundation, assembly, caulking, painting and shingling.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Shed kit that should be an easier build is a NIGHTMARE! I found this shed to have some real flaws in the materials provided. Also the plan to assemble the walls entirely with frame and wall complete before installing them very time consuming and more difficult than just framing the walls up and THEN installing the siding. Fortunately I was careful and it came together ok. Details of issues are below: - The instructions that came with the shed are very minimal, and differ from the ones I downloaded(outdated according to Handy Homes) downloaded from the Home Depot site which got me into trouble since they weren't current, but at least they had more detailed instructions. - Precut walls and lumber were not cut to stated measurements, including where two sides should've matched with each other but didn't due to size differences. For example: - Part "VW" was over an inch short - The OSB roofing, some of the panels were 35 5/8" as the plans stated and some was 36", which made it difficult to line up when installing the roof panels - I had to get creative... -Also the directions to bend the roofing shingles at the angle half-way up in the gambrel/barn style roof state to use nails to hold them down - you never should use nails through the top of a roof, especially her in the rainy NW! -The quality on a number of the boards was poor, gouges and chunks out of them. I have a good picture of one if you want it. So I can't recommend this shed kit. I'm handy and have helped build homes and built my own garage in the past, but this was not a good experience and cost me a lot of time trying to figure out to manage these issues. You could have better quality materials and less headaches to buy the materials and build yourself. I wouldn't make this choice again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bigger project than we thought We loved the barn look of it and it had tons of room with the loft so we bought it thinking I could do this in a few days. I have average capability when it comes to home projects and this one seemed within my abilities. Turns out it wasn't and I spent one day of frustration before I hired a carpenter apprentice I knew and he builit it in 25 hours and it turned out great and I love it. He said this project is beyond the average guy as everything is precise and needs to go together perfectly square for it to work properly in the end. I started slightly off and it just got worse from there so he was right in that remark for sure. But in the end it is a good shed for the price and it will do the job I want it to...just be sure you know what you are doing and start with everything perfectly square and it will go well for you...don't and it will bite you back and you will need to tear it all apart and start over as I did...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY THIS KIT!!! The kit was delivered without any floor decking. Also, no instructions. The link on the home depot site is NOT to the correct instruction manual. You will have to go the manufacturer's website for the correct manual. The lengths of lumber in the kit and the lengths given in the manuals are rarely the same. This is ok when they're too long, that can easily be remedied, but too short is not acceptable. There are even errors in measurement in the instruction manual for spacing. It is largely impossible to get this shed square because of the lumber issues. Also, it is grossly under built. The manual suggest purchasing additional lumber to improve the stability of the shed. That right there is a big warning that your shed is not going to be of good quality. Save yourself some money, and likely time, and buy some plans and the uncut lumber and build from scratch instead of this dreadfully low quality product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Shed This shed is very nice and quite large. We love the upper storage space also. Not too bad to put together but definitely a 2 man job. Needs to be painted and does not come with shingles.
