Customer Questions & Answers

Hello, I have a very sunny front yard in FL and need to lay grass... will this St. Augustine work for me? It says Shade Sod but may b brand?

My front yard gets 10+ hours of sun and want St Augustine to put down... if this isn't the correct sod, which is that Home Depot carries?

Trying to figure out what type of Saint Augustine grass we need for our VERY VERY shady front house

Hello, I know that Saint Augustine has various types of grass. Some S. Augustine grass like more sun than other. I heard the Palmetto Saint Augustine is best SHADE tolerant grass. Am I right? We have huge problem to keep our grass alive. Two Previous owners of our house been planting sods. We have no grass these days. We have 4 over 40 feet high oak trees (2 red oaks +2 live oaks, they been professionally trimmed few months ago, but fool of leaves again :-(. So, its quite a shady spot. During the day from maybe 1 to 5pm due to leaves foliage we have little sun spots here and there on ground and we have straight sun maybe from 6 to 7 sh pm. (How much streight sun we needed to grow loan? is partial sun during the day good enough?) So, the question is, will this grass growing or not? I'm not looking to waste another $2 000. If grass wouldn't grow we might will work with another solution, which we hate to do. we don't like idea to have ground cover. Mean time we cultivating our soil, about to put composed layer of soil on top of it, fertilize and etc. We got a lot rain here in North Texas. So, pls help us with advice what to do. We really wanna have green loan. The good thing that we got sooooo much rain here and our soil almost like butter (which is unusual for Dallas area), great time for planting... on another hand, bad history of growing grass around our house makes us worry.

Hi Mila, I'm Travis from The Home Depot. Thanks for visiting our site. All prayers are answered, but sometimes the answer is no. St. Augustine grass needs at least 4 hours of intense, uninterrupted sun exposure to thrive. An hour here and there will not add up to enough sun. Trimming the trees will help, but it seems that you have described a lawn that is too shady for grass. Without proper sunshine, the grass will decline over time. Shade tolerant plants that are surrounded by mulch will give your yard a cultivated appearance without causing any additional maintenance issues. Embrace and enjoy your trees for the shade that they provide. Thank you for asking, -Travis
