How easy is this to install with little or no plumbing experience? This is a replacement for an older version of the same model.
Asked by: Carrie
Not too bad. If you already have a like model it is very easy. If it is a new install, still not hard. Do the following for best success: Make sure you watch a video on how to use PVC dope, measure your pipes and make sure it all fits together before starting to glue it together and don't be afraid of buying extra parts for the plumbing PVC and starting over. It's not expensive and buying two of such things and taking back the unused parts is what Home Depot is for. It will save you some trips. You know you are going back to HD for the next project, but why do it in the middle of this one?

Can i use this pump to pump water from washing machine line to drain if drain is about 20 feet from machine

Asked by: Ben
You couldn't pump directly from the washing machine. But you could attach this to a laundry/utility sink and drain the washing machine into the sink. From there the pump could move it 20 feet (but you didn't specify which direction the 20 feet is in, so I would double check the pump's specs). The sink wouldn't even need to have a water supply. Just be sure to filter the washing machine discharge to remove the lint. There's plenty of filters that clip on to the washing machine drain hose available.

Can I plumb a dishwasher that sits next to a sink to this unit?

Asked by: JW
I would be cautious about plumbing a dishwasher to this. It isn't a macerating pump and dishwashers tend to send debris down the drain. This pump is meant to pump water, not "stuff." If you used a portable dishwasher which drains into a sink, and the sink that had a good strainer I think it would be okay.

Purchased this pump after cheaper 1/3 HP pump that was better advertised on website was incompatible for drain connection in my bar sink application. Had seen this particular pump installed in a youtube video from a This Old House episode. Works perfectly and the pump is more than sufficient for the task. The ball valve was adjusted to provide a significant restriction to smooth the flow rate of the pump (a standard adjustment included in the instructions). This pump costs significantly more than the other pump, but it fit the job well and is performing. Not much more to say.

It worked well, except it would occasionally fail to shut itself off after emptying the sink. At first, this would remedy itself if a bit more water was added to the sink. But after 10 weeks of occasional (10-15 operations per day) use, it apparently came on after hours and ran till the pump failed - also taking out the GFI outlet as well. Good design; we will replace with the same Make/Model hoping our first unit was a one-off out of box failure.

The pump fits the same space as the previous pump that was professionally installed 13 years ago. The replacement pump is the same manufacture and model, so that is not surprising. The instructions are written for experienced people and not for novices. Some information on what the additional pvc plumbing parts are for would be appreciated. The pump comes with a check valve, a slip ball valve and a connector piece. The instructions were very light from there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice pump I installed this pump under a bar sink in a finished basement. The pump was easy to install and came with a check valve and several pipe fittings. The pump works very well. It pumps water up a 6 foot vertical rise plus several other smaller vertical rises on its way to the drain pump. Great buy - I'm glad I went this route.

So when I needed a utility sink in my basement it was an obvious choice (and simpler than the reservoir/sump pumps that need venting). There's a few things to keep in mind. I used a "step-up" utility/laundry sink. I'm not sure how the standard thermoplastic sinks sold at HD would do with the weight of this pump. Also, assuming your sink has a separate drain (as opposed to one molded into the sink itself), remember this replaces the nut that holds the drain in place. And it does weigh a bit, I banged up my fingers trying to twist it into place from an awkward position. Eventually I placed a couple of bricks under it temporarily to help me get it into position. It is surprisingly quiet and the PVC hardware supplied is good quality. Home Depot should stock these things in the store.
