Rated 5 out of 5 by love my heirloom wood island countertop! I got this sample and then did end up going with a Distresed Black Walnut wood countertop from Heirloom. I tested the waterproofing on the sample and it did completely protect against water and the other stuff i tested on it. I was pretty surprised by that. apparently you only need to apply another coat of oil every 3 or 4 years to keep up the waterproof seal. nice. so, basically it's the same maintenance as my granite. and if I ever have a problem I can just sand it out and rub on a little oil. anyway, it was completely worth it. I did granite counters around the edges of my kitchen actually (they were a bit cheaper in all honesty) and then i upgraded to a wood island counter top. plus i think it makes my kitchen look WAY more "design-ie" that I didn't use builders standard granite on the whole thing. I totally recommend going with heirloom wood. even if you also go with another surface. that way it's cheaper and a cool designer look. oh, and the whole deal from order to install for me was 5 weeks. so that was a bit longer than the granite would have been but it wasn't bad at all.
