What type of wood is this? What type of sealer is required?

What type of wood is this made from? What type of sealant is needed? How many coats need to be applied? How often does it need to be applied?
Asked by: SB
This sample is the distressed version of the black walnut. Black walnut is a semi-dense hardwood native to eastern North America with a distinctive dark brown, swirled grain. This wood makes an excellent choice for countertops because of its stable grain structure and density. The distressed version will have more imperfections and knot inclusions, along with a slightly grayer color, thus giving your countertop a more "aged' or "reclaimed" appearance. Care for this wood is a simple application of food grade mineral oil/ natural wax combination such as Howard Feed-n-Wax every 4 to 6 months, depending on use.

4 in. x 4 in. Wood Countertop Sample in Distressed Black Walnut Plank is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst purchase ever We were so excited to get this countertop for our kitchen island that we almost didn't mind waiting months to have it installed! Once installed, it looked great with the other Quartz countertops. However, we quickly realized that this was in no way "fine for everyday use" as the Home Depot designer told us. My son sits at the island everyday for breakfast and then again for homework. I was extremely disappointed to see that handwriting left a permanent impression after each time he worked there. Upon inspection by another countertop professional, who also agreed this is disappointing product performance, I contacted Home Depot and the installers. Then after just a few weeks, there are now cracks in the surface. It's been five months of phone calls and emails. They refuse to even come out to inspect their inferior product. Unless you have the luxury of unlimited counter space and only want to look at your countertops and not use, DO NOT SPEND THE MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from love my heirloom wood island countertop! I got this sample and then did end up going with a Distresed Black Walnut wood countertop from Heirloom. I tested the waterproofing on the sample and it did completely protect against water and the other stuff i tested on it. I was pretty surprised by that. apparently you only need to apply another coat of oil every 3 or 4 years to keep up the waterproof seal. nice. so, basically it's the same maintenance as my granite. and if I ever have a problem I can just sand it out and rub on a little oil. anyway, it was completely worth it. I did granite counters around the edges of my kitchen actually (they were a bit cheaper in all honesty) and then i upgraded to a wood island counter top. plus i think it makes my kitchen look WAY more "design-ie" that I didn't use builders standard granite on the whole thing. I totally recommend going with heirloom wood. even if you also go with another surface. that way it's cheaper and a cool designer look. oh, and the whole deal from order to install for me was 5 weeks. so that was a bit longer than the granite would have been but it wasn't bad at all.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love love love this countertop I will be using this on my kitchen island when we remodel. My designer has used it before and her customer that hs had it for 2 years gives very positive feedback. However my builder says the company that installs it hates it because they've seen too many quality issues. So we will be addressing quality with our sales rep to try to avoid any issues. I am still going to use it though!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Beware ordering wood countertops! I ordered and paid for my wood countertop at my local Home Depot in Elk Grove, CA mid Dec 2014. A measure was scheduled for Jan 19, 2015 after the holidays and cabinet installation with an expectation that the countertop would be delivered a couple of weeks after. The install went fine on 1/19 but after a couple of weeks I realized I hadn't heard back about the install date. I called the contact number which wasn't Home Depot or the countertop manufacturer but rather an installation company. They told me the countertop would take 4-6 weeks and that if they had any questions they'd let me know. I told them, I am the customer and I have questions which they couldn't answer. Long story short, the countertop didn't arrive for 15 weeks! My entire remodel came to a screeching halt and I enjoyed almost 4 months of cooking on a portable electric burner! The Home Depot people were nice and clearly didn't seem to know that the wood countertop could take this long but there really didn't seem to be anyone I could contact who was accountable and able to address the situation. To this day, I have no idea why it took 15 weeks! If you like the wood look just be forewarned that you need to inquire in advance as to the time frame so you can plan your remodel and life around it.
