Product Overview

Cork flooring combines the beauty of a natural and truly renewable material with the comfort of a cushioned, warm and silent surface. It is highly sustainable since the cork oak trees are not cut. Only the outer bark is harvested, and it will grow again each 9 years. The new narrow and beveled plank format creates a more appealing and elegant look than traditional cork floors that are made in large panels. Cork flooring is warm underfoot, comfortable and soft to walk on, anti-microbial, fire and moisture resistant and provides unrivalled noise reduction properties. Installation is made easy with the precision milled glueless locking system. This floor features an integrated underlayment made out of cork. Easy maintenance: simply vacuum. prefinished cork requires no additional sealing after installation. Warm to the touch and resilient, cork floors are a great addition to your home. Ideal for all levels of installation. This floor qualifies for 4 LEED points: (1) EQ4.3 (Indoor Environmental Quality)Low Emitting, (2) MR4.1 (Materials and Resources)Recycled Content, (3) MR 6-Rapidly Renewable Materials, (4) ID 1-Innovation in Design.

Answer:
For floating floors such as the Millstead Cork, any permanent fixtures such as cabinetry must be installed first and then the flooring laid, allowing the necessary expansion space around the perimeter and at all vertical obstructions.

Our room is 36 feet by 26 feet. How large of an area can you install of the Millstead Thick x 11 5/8 in. Wide x 36 in. Length Cork Flooring before you must have an expansion gap?

Install is on a raised foundation with crawl space under part of it and a basement under the other part. What type of underlayment is needed?

Answer (1)

Answer:
0.40" (2/5") expansion space should be left at the perimeter and at all vertical obstructions. Areas greater than 900 sq. ft or 30 feet in either direction require extra expansion gaps.
Millstead Cork Floors have an integrated cork backing, so underlayment is not required. On concrete slabs, 6 mil polyethylene film should be installed as a vapor barrier.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.0 out of 5 by 1 reviewer.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Technical difference from some other products that may affect your project There is one significant difference between this and some other comparable products. This flooring uses the 'click' to assemble feature - but this feature is only available when the long edge is attached to another long edge. The end (short) edge is not designed to click in - it is deliberately cut shorter so that end-to-end assembly is a drop-in, not a click function. This also has the effect that if you are in a situation where you have a long run in one direction and want to make a 90 degree turn in your installation, you cannot 'click' the long edge of the new run to the assembled short edges of the long run. Indeed, you will have to trim the long edge of the first piece of the new run flush with the cork surface to enable even a drop-in connection. I was working in a long hall with many doors where I needed to add a threshold piece in each doorway - I was forced to glue the threshold pieces in place which is not an optimal solution. I bring this up because other products on the market that I have used before do in fact offer the 'click' feature in both edge-to-edge and edge-to-end linking. So think carefully about how you plan to install this flooring so you don't get unpleasantly surprised. August 14, 2014
