What is the life expectancy of the Power Pet Electronic Patio Pet Door for Sliding Glass Doors? It is a large investment and I want to know how long they last. I see that it has a year warranty...but that is not my question.

Can this be used with a double slider? Two sliding doors that slide each way?

Asked by: Brandy

With the door in place, how do humans go to the patio

We have a 2 panel sliding glass door to out patio. The right facing panel is fixed in place and we use the left one to go to and from the patio. I'm assuming this door attached either to the frame of the sliding patio doors or to the door that slides to go out to the patio but need clarification before investing in this product.

I was actually unable to use the door, which is why I am giving it a 3 star review. It might be great... it might not, but I didn't have a chance to test it. When I tried to install the door, it was slightly taller than the sliding glass door we have, even without the metal slider on the top of the door. When we received the door, the collar was missing from the box (it looks like the door may have been returned and someone didn't check the box for all the parts before sending it back out again) so I couldn't play with the door to test it out. I called customer service for Home Depot and they were very helpful in getting this returned for me. 5 stars for their customer service department, honestly. I even called twice because I originally told them parts were missed, and then called and had to tell them the door didn't fit. It ended up working out for us because our cats are suddenly door ninjas and try to run out everytime we let the dog out so I don't think the door would have worked for us.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My dog thinks she is a queen, and we are both more relaxed. This product works awesome. Even my big 80 lb dog can go in and out easily. I no longer have to rush home to let the king and queen out, and she no longer has to yell at me to let her in and out. I would highly recommend this product. It was a breeze to install, and works like a charm. One problem was the dogs stand with their heads sticking out and the cat went out the door. Luckily he got scared when he could not get back in, and he has not tried that adventure again. The other problem is the door for human is much smaller now, and if we were large people we could have issues going out back.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best Gift my dog has ever received. First of all the door looks great, and works right out of the box. My dog never using a door before adapted quickly to it after about 10 minutes of training. She is a German Shepherd so she learns quickly. The sonic sensor the dog wears is a separate collar. Make sure the round metal portion that emits the sonic wave is not covered by the tags on your dogs collar. It will effect the range and accuracy. The automatic door works flawlessly, it opens quickly and closes quickly. Too quick for our indoor only cats to access. The dog has to be pointed directly at the door and up close for it to open. If she is walking past the door it does not open. However there is the occasional random opening from time to time (Possibly ricocheted off dog tags or other object?) You have the option to adjust the range for both inside and outside. You can also turn off the inside or outside sensors to keep your dog inside or out. I found the door panel size I ordered to be the perfect size. Be sure you measure the height of the track of your sliding glass window. Being so, the installation was a breeze for me. However the panel that fits into the sliding door frame does not fit snug so you have a gap allowing air to come inside and leave the house. That can easily be remedied with calk. Also, the fasteners on the top of the panel that allows you to adjust the height and lock in place the spring load upper portion of the panel, got in the way while attempting to slide the insert into door frame. In spite of this I managed to make it work. Be aware once the panel is inserted there is no way to lock your sliding door using the lock in the handle. The reason for this being if you did lock the sliding door to the dog door panel all you have to do is open the sliding door and the panel will slide out with it since the panel is not secured onto the door frame. To solve this problem the panel comes with a metal bracket. You will need to use metal screws to attach to the upper or lower portion of the sliding door (opposite end from panel). Drill a hole into the frame, the bracket slides into the drilled hole to prevent door from opening. I also use a broom stick cut to size placed inside the door track to prevent the door from being opened. The description stated door opening accommodates dogs up the 100 lb. My dog is 75 lb, thin built and barely fits. She has learned to stoop slightly lower to access the door. I feel the price is a little steep for the dog door. However, once I had it up and running and no longer having to rush to get the dog outside while keeping my cats safe I soon forgot how much it cost. Also, although the panel is not bolted into the track, the sliding glass door combined with the spring loaded upper portion of the panel securing it inside the track appears to be difficult for anyone to removed. the automatic sliding door would be difficult to pry or kick open from the outside. I personally feel secure with it in. You may also have to adjust the wheels of your sliding glass door to fit flush against the inserted panel. Mine did not fit flush until wheels were adjusted. The provided weather stripping will not solve the gap if door does not fit evenly against panel; wheels MUST be adjusted. Also expect to lose width with entering or exiting through your sliding glass door. The dog door panel takes up a lot of space. I have to enter and exit sideways. I was expecting this issue since i measured prior to buying door. I hope my two since worth helped you. It wasn't as difficult to install as I thought it would be. The most difficult part was getting the sliding door and panel to fit flush.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Both Dog and I Love This Door This door works great. Our dog had no trouble using it. We use it to enable him to go outside whenever he wants but keep our cat safe inside. It leaves only a small amount of room for people to go in and out but overall this is a great product and solved a dual pet problem in our hoime.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I ordered this doggie door to keep my cat inside while giving my dog the freedom to go out whenever she wants. I love it. The only drawback to it is the size. Once put in the sliding glass door, there is not much room for a human to go in or out of the sliding glass door. I would still recommend it though because it has made my life so much easier. Although it is a bit pricey, it is definately worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This door is top quality, problem free. I bought this door for a very busy dog that goes in and out all day. It is of execellent quality, sturdy and easy to use. The collar transmitter is very sensitive and works very well. I no longer have to watch the clock and rush home to let the dog out, she can go in and out as she pleases. This door was worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Product and Customer Service This dog door is amazing and I couldn't be happier. It took less than 60 seconds for our dog to get used to it. The sensitivity is perfect. It has the auto-retract feature if it detects something blocking it which is reassuring. Installation: Literally consisted of setting it in the doorway and attaching some weather stripping. The door will actually fit a slightly shorter doorway. Customer Service: After using the door for a day, the sensor range suddenly dropped to a few inches. We contacted customer service and they immediately sent us a replacement sensor and a free collar to make up for the trouble. People need to remember that anything electronic can break, but how well the manufacturer fixes the issue is what matters. Tip 1: Remove the plastic cover on the dog collar and paint it using Krylon Fusion spray paint meant for plastics. Locating a hot pink collar sensor in a giant flower garden is much easier than black plastic. Tip 2: The dog door panel and the sliding glass door frame butted up to one another when installed. Adhesive weather stripping will keep it stable, but I wanted increased protection. I recommend taking two pieces of aluminum channel, putting them back to back, and connecting them with pop rivets. The result is a “H” shaped channel that slides over the door jam and dog door panel. Tip 3: The screws which tighten the top of the frame are exposed on the external side of the door. Theoretically you may be able to loosen it from outside. I added small white rubber plugs to cover the ends for added safety.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product As others have said, I don't have to watch the clock and get home before an "accident" can happen. It took a couple of hours before my dog was comfortable with the noise that the door motor made. Now, she comes and goes whenever she wants. We have not had any "accidents" since I installed the door, which by the way, was very, very simple. I would suggest that you order an extra transmitter, just to have. Somehow my dog was able to pop the cover open and lose parts. Luckily she did this while in the house and I was able to find everything I needed to put it back together. The door can be manually opened for the dog to come and go, but this kinda defeats the purpose. I hated to pay so much for a dog door, but it has been a good investment, considering the cost of a new wood floor and/or carpet!!!
