Customer Reviews

21 cc Straight Shaft Trimmer with Tap and Go Head is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 72.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Had it for 3 years now I've had this for 2 seasons now and it has beyond impressed me. Both times I've put it away for the season I can pull it out and it will start right up. I have YET to replace the spark plug and I have a large culvert that requires some heavy use. I grew up with a nice $400 Honda 4-stroke and this may not be as perfect but it's about half the weight and 90% of the power (not on the low end though). I also prefer the 2 stroke oil mixing since you don't have to worry about oil changes. Reasonably quiet. Really a great product. Only complaint is the shield is a bit small and the few control surfaces like to rotate and need to be re-tightened.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Trimmer. Assembled in about 30 minutes. Starts easily. Use the primer bulb, then choke, then pull. No problem. Has a lot of power. I like the fact that the unit has a centrifugal clutch, meaning the string stops spinning at idle speed. Also, the clutch engages smoothly at the slightest blip of the throttle; so, it does not do the shimmy shake like other brands. You can still use it to trim at lower engine speeds and the clutch is still engaged. Also, the trimmer String that comes with it is very tough. Got tough new growth at the base of a tree? --No problem for this trimmer. Wind it up to full speed and hold on tight! I guess my only complaint would be that the cutter guard is a bit smaller than I would like.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a high quality product at a reasonable price. I recently purchased this unit to replace another new trimmer that I purchased and returned to a Hm Dpt competitor. The reason I purchased the Hitachi is because of the quality of a Hitachi cordless drill that I purchased over 10 years ago tha'ts still running strong. This unit has not dissapointed me in the least. It starts easy, purrs like a kitten at idle, and roars like a lion when in use. (Very strong.) The line it came with seems to be strong and very durable. I think this one will last me anther 10 years or so. (You do get what you pay for.)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good trimmer for home use - one suggested modification I've only had the trimmer for a couple weeks, so this review doesn't speak to its longevity or durability. The seven year warranty does seem like a commitment indicating it will give good service long term. My prior Homelight trimmer was in heavy service for almost 20 years. The trimmer works as advertised, is very easy to start, light to carry and quiet. Since it uses a 50:1 fuel/oil ratio it produces no perceptible exhaust. I did make one immediate modification. I installed a "Pivot Trim" cutting head rather than the stock unit. Google Pivot Trim to see what stores in your area carry them. The Pivot Trim doesn't eat line like stock units do. I ran my former trimmer, with a Pivot Trim, for at least three weeks at a stretch without using any additional line at all and I'm sure the Hitachi will do the same. I don't understand why the Pivot Trim is not OEM on most trimmers. When you add the Pivot Trim you have to adjust the placement of the line shield along the shaft so that the unit cuts with the spinning line in a horizontal plane. This is no big deal. I also installed the shaft grip handle outside the recommended section of the shaft housing so that I can stand upright while trimming. Otherwise, it looks like a good investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality product I did fairly extensive research on weed eaters, and purchased the Hitachi 21cc Straight Shaft Trimmer because it seemed comparable to some higher-priced professional weed eaters. After having used it several times for 25-30 min., I have been perfectly pleased with its quality and performance. In most respects, it appears the equivalent to the Husqvarna 28cc Straight Shaft Trimmer (which I have also used in the past), which I have seen priced $30 more than this one. A good value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from best gas trimmer ever owned I have owned 3 gas trimmers, this Hitachi 21cc engine blew away the 25cc and 30cc engines on the previous trimmers I've owned. I've had this trimmer for 3 years now. The only disappointed was that the gas line deteriorated after a year and a half, but once I got that replaced, it was good to go. the 2 previous trimmers would bog down in foot high grass and weeds sometimes taller, but this Hitachi just goes through them without any problems, like slicing through soft butter. no problems starting majority of the time, 2-3 pulls. This is light and easy to control. The balance to me is good. This is the best money I've spent on any of the gas powered yard tools I've purchased.
