How much square footage can it heat

I am using this Holmes extra large heater in a studio that I use as a short-term vacation rental. The studio is actually a converted garage (built in 1924 with little insulation if any) and is approximately 400 sq.ft. Since it is in Southern California, one block from the beach, we don't get extremely cold weather but night time temps in the winter do occasionally dip into the upper 40's to low 50's. I've had no complaints so far from guests that they were too cold.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Can't turn off or disable Frost Protect? I received the heater today and think I will be quite pleased with the wifi capability. The one concern is that I can't seem to figure out how to turn off the Frost Protect mode. I purchased the heater for a finished (but not insulated) shed so I wouldn't want it turning on itself. I only want the heater to be activated if I elect to do so on the app. Should I be able to disable Frost Protect? If not, it kind of defeats the purpose of the Wemo if I need to completely shut the heater down in between use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Heater works app does not The Holmes extra large heater with WeMo went beyond my expectations as a room heater. First thing out of the box I was impressed with the aesthetics of such a large device being able to blend into a room like furniture. I was impressed by how much heat was circulated throughout my home within just 5 min of run time. The one thing I am not impressed with is the WeMo app and the way it works. The device will not turn off completely from the app and the controls within are very clunky. Discontinued using app after less than a week. It worked fine for a few days then stopped controlling the fan on the heater and needed to be shut down manually.

It looks like something out of the 1960s, which is fine with me. It heats. Yep. It wasn't cheap. You can get a decent heater for $35 and put a $20 WeMo smart switch on it for a bastardized version of this (that's what I'm doing for my teenager's room). I bought it so I could program the heating. You can program it and set the temp remotely with the app. The short comings are these: there is just one daily schedule you can set and although WeMo boast integration with IFTTT the Holmes heaters are not able to work with it. For instance, I want it to turn off when I get further than a mile from home or turn on when I get within a few miles of home. IFTTT would let you do that. Still, I can manually turn it on from my phone when I leave work. I can set a low overnight temp when I go to bed then have the daily schedule switch to a warmer temp an hour before my alarm. Anyway, we'll get through one winter like this then I'll get the gas heater in my condo replaced (it's from 1957). Gas is much more cost effective.

The fact that I can monitor the heater and set up a schedule from my smart phone using the WEMO app is very convenient. It also allows me to monitor the heater when I'm away which is great to prevent anything from freezing. My only complaint about this heater is that if the power goes out and then the power comes back on the heater will no longer run. The heater has to be physically turned back on. In my opinion that is the only shortcoming of this heater. Other then my one complaint I couldn't be happier with the product. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Heater! We've been using the Holmes Smart Heater for about a month and are loving it. We placed it in several rooms of the house before settling in the master bedroom. Had it in the guest room for a while - my guests really enjoyed being able to change the temps their needs. I may buy another to keep in there. We are very happy with how well it works, the digital thermostat and the fact that it is extremely quiet. It's not too big so it fits in nicely too. At first I had trouble with the WeMo app on my phone but finally got it figured out but I don't use it very often. I think to have a regular remote control for when just at home would be a nice bonus so you could use it either way.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not worth the Price I purchased the large one and it arrived defective so I spent more money and purchased the XL heater. What a waste of money! The unit does get warm but the fan isn't powerful enough to heat the room. For the money I paid I expected this to heat a room 12X12 easily and when the Holmes heater is on it can't get it warmer then 60 here in New England. Save your money and buy a different one with a better blower!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from First one failed on updating firmware, HD took it back, 2nd one I could not get a reliable conne... First one failed on updating firmware, HD took it back, 2nd one I could not get a reliable connection to, returned that as well. HD gave me no grief, good, because I wasn't in the mood for it. Same issues others reported. My solution was to get a wemo switch, find a location in my garage where I could get a 60 dbm signal (using WiFi Analyzer on my phone), and plugging a heater into that. Seemed to work Ok, so far. However I do have to restart wemo app occasionally as I get undetected switch error. Less than 60dbm wouldn't work for me. Check DBm first before you even think of wemo in a detached building. Wasted a lot of time on this, Holmes people were unfamiliar with it. Perhaps contacting Belkin wemo people would know more.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Remote that came with the unit stopped working In general I like the heater. It takes a long time to heat a 10 x 16' room but the Wemo feature is nice and works reliably. The remote that comes with it stopped working after about a year. No idea why. Batteries are good. That's annoying because sometimes I like the simplicity of picking up the remote to turn it on, rather than searching for the app on my phone. Other than that I think the unit is ok.
