Questions & Answers

Is it necessary to paint over this product?

I'd like to use it on a ceiling and I think the white color should be fine. Is there any reason that I'd need to apply regular paint over this product?
Asked by: Gabbi
No. Taggers would tag at my restaurant. I used to prime, texture & paint. Now, I just roll this texture and call it good. About a year after initial usage, the white color turned yellowish. So, it will be replaced very soon with a new one. At $27, I don't mind getting good a new one every year. If you do paint it, it does look a little better as long as you use semi or gloss. If you plan on using flat, then don't bother.

What roller pad should be used

Asked by: Vera
Hi, We used a 'knockdown" texture technique and rolled it on with a "loop goop" roller. You can get them from Home Depot. I hope this helps.

what is difference between sand and popcorn paint?

Asked by: jake
The sand has small grit size particles added, the popcorn has much larger particles added. The finished product is much rougher with popcorn. I hope this helps.

As a contractor renovating a 60's era rent house, I needed to re-texture a few walls to match the adjacent sand textured walls after pulling the old wallpaper. After making a couple of test applications, I was able to closely match the existing texture by thinning the 'mud' and applying it with a paint pad. The roller created a stipple, close but not exact. When the sand saturated an area, I used a brush to move it and dab it to match the surrounding area. In the past, I've added Homax's Sand Additive to paint. If you don't get the slurry correct, you're stuck with it. The Roll-On Texture allows the applicator to scrape it off before it sets and start over. This is not as easy as shooting on an 'orange peel' texture, as found in newer construction, but if you prefer to maintain the sand texture, this will work.

I did my bathroom with it and it came out BEAUTIFUL! So a couple years later I decided to do my kitchen and couldn't find it, so used the Homax and it is terrible. No comparison! Thin, little definition. I should have just mixed the compound myself at a fraction of the cost. This stuff is garbage. I will try to find Behr online, but what as shame to discontinue such a wonderful product. Boo.

Although the best method of application is with a roller, a paint tray wastes a lot of product. Best applied to a roller with a putty knife on two sides. This stuff won't drip even upside-down. Like any project, take your time and results come out well. If you roll the roller too quickly. sand goes everywhere. A word to the wise. Primer IS necessary. I used Glidden gripper on drywall and left three small areas of mud unprimered. They will show through. Primer will need to be applied over the texture---primer, texture, primer, paint.

Covering walls that previously had wallpaper and this seems to be doing the trick. I thinned down a bit with water to allow easier spreading with a roller. Brushing straight from the bucket is "chunky"... Only in the beginning stages and we plan to do a finish coat of regular paint. I'd recommend a thorough stir before beginning and a 3/4 nap roller to apply, and make sure that the wall surface is primed before application.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Maybe the best decision we made My wife and I hated the 25 plus year old wall paper that was in the master bath when we purchased our home. We always thought it was going to be too expensive and too difficult to put texture on the wall so we were going to use more wall paper. At the store when picking up paint for another room I saw this product. We did some research and decided to give it a try. We are not contractors i work in IT and she is a secretary but in one weekend we were able to transform our bathroom with ease. Best of all total for texture, paint, and spakle was less that $70.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Covered several layers of peeled wallpaper Was surprised to find flat walls under several layers of wallpaper so decided to research products to cover old wallpaper! Found this roll-on texture on HomeDepot.Com and chatted with one of their professionals about covering old wallpaper and they recommend painting with oil based primer. So I sanded the edges of the torn paper and painted with Kilz low oder oil based primer. Was able to paint on texture same day! You can get creative or just roll on which I did. Was very pleased with the final look of the project!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the money The stuff worked really well. It goes on easy after you mix a pint of water in it. Definitely use a mixer attachment on a drill to mix. If you need more than 1 bucket then buy a larger bucket and mix all the product together for a consistent coverage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Stuff - Read this Review!!!!!! I read some of the negative reviews and was compelled to leave a review because I love this stuff. First off, I'm a DIY homeowner that sits in an office Monday thru Friday 9am-5pm. My house was build in the 70's and had a random sand swirl finish in every room. After demoing my kitchen and master bathroom to make changes, I wanted to finish the new walls to match the existing walls in the house. I also had a room with wallpaper glue that wouldn't come off - tried every liquid, scrapping and even the steamer with no luck. Before you leave Home Depot, go to the concrete section and buy a Marshalltown Model # 829-HD brush. It's only $7.50 and makes the application simple. What I do is hold the brush by the wooden block the bristles are attached to, dip the bristles into the bucket and apply using a half circle motion - similar to windshield wipers. I'll continue to do this in random patterns, overlapping previous strokes which gives me that random look. Works perfect and you can't tell the difference between the new finish and the original finish to the house!
