I would go with 000 unless you are using water base poly. You must use synthetic wool with water base finishes.

Answer:
Thank you for your inquiry. #0000 is to be used for the final finish on fine woodwork. #000 is used to scuff/sand between coats to remove dust rubs and surface imperfections. It depends on what you are trying to do. I would use either of these listed.

Would this product remove paper stuck on a varnished oil painting?

This question is from #4/0 12 Pad Steel Wool, Super Fine Grade
Asked by
Chicago, Illinois

I have a potential art show coming up and want to display some of the paintings I did for my senior thesis this past spring. They are paintings on MDF board. When I took them home from school, I wrapped them in brown paper, and then bubble wrap to protect the edges. I've unwrapped one of my paintings and discovered that some of the paper had stuck to the varnish in some spots. Partially unwrapping two more have yielded the same result. Either the varnish was not completely dry when I wrapped them, or the fluctuating humidity in the house has caused the paper to stick.
I do not want to take the varnish off and completely re-varnish 6 paintings. My mom's boyfriend suggested a fine steel wool as it would get the paper off with very little varnish removed. I just want to be sure before I buy one and take it to my paintings.
Thank you!

Thank you for your inquiry. I would not recommend that use as it may end up removing the varnish off the painting.

Answer:
They should carry one that is more resistant to corrosion. But not sure of the name or what grade it would be 5 down to four ought. It would be around the paint department if the store carries it. Or you may be able to order it from their online store.

Thank you for contacting The Homax Group.
Unfortunately, we do not supply Home Depot with a 316L type of steel wool. You may want to contact a Home Depot associate to find out if they have a stainless steel wool from another supplier.
Thank you for your interest in our products.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Quality Product It is just steel wool but it is a good quality and preforms very well for it's intended purpose. Highly recommended..... =) As with any steel wool don't let it get wet with water or it will begin rusting right away. October 13, 2015

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by works Steel wool works fine. What concerns me is I still have not received my refund on the defective hedge trimmers. Where's my money? August 19, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great for cleaning car windshield I bought this steel wool to gently clean off water spots from my car windshield. Use this fine grade steel wool and some vinegar, gently scrub the windshield, and they're gone. Simple and effective. February 25, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product for cleaning glasses Used this to clean windshield and shower door glasses. February 11, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by It's a package of small wool rolls. Works great. I use it for my jewelry projects, to remove patina or polish oxidized metal. Works great. September 30, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Has become a cheap, ineffective and costly product for woodworking This used to be a good product when there were 9 in a package. Then they went to a 12/pk and claimed you received 25% more free. NOT TRUE! These thinner/looser pads fall apart quickly, make a huge mess,....and the really horrible and costly problem is that this steel wool now gets stuck in your woodworking and even tack cloth doesn't pull it out! I had to sand down below my first 2 coats of varnish in order to get it out of the wood. November 9, 2012
