I have been using mine for over 5 years *(probably closer to 8) - 2 units stacked with a mantel on top. I have heavier books (cookbooks/magazine caddies) on the bottom 3 shelves, and paperbacks on the upper shelves. I have had NO problem with sagging. I would say not! I had to buy expensive L-brackets to hang them, and, I am only storing lightweight things like teas!

I want to place this bookcase on top of a desk. Do you think it could be placed upside down, so there would be room for the monitor?

As the design calls for the 3 shelves to fold DOWN, into place when the sides open out (from the folded position), & I believe only gravity & a 'stop' holds each shelf in it's final position, you probably would need to install small L-brackets for each shelf if you want to use the bookcase upside down (to allow for your PC monitor). I'D SUGGEST INSTEAD you use the bookcase right-side-up AND JUST DON'T LOWER THE BOTTOM SHELF INTO IT'S INTENDED POSITION. THAT WAY THERE's plenty of room for your monitor AND you still have 2 great, sturdy shelves above. Just remember to clamp the lower shelf to the posts so it doesn't fall onto your monitor. Read Less

Is it possible to have two mantle tops when the bookcases are stacked (i.e., bookcase on the bottom, a mantle top, & another bookcase & mantle top)?

Medulla,
Thanks for your question. For safety reasons we do not recommend using two mantle tops when the bookcases are stacked. Atop each bookcases are pegs that must align with the bottom of the top bookcase. Thank you for shopping with Home Depot.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly what I needed The shelving units were easy to set-up. No screws required. One of the units had cracks from shipping but I did not want to deal with returning and waiting for a replacement unit. September 22, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by folding/stacking shelf great ;smaill shelf. no tools, just unfold and put in place. February 23, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice shelves, but color ??? Easy to assemble, sturdy, nice looking; but honey oak seems more like fruitwood than oak. I like the bar in the back so books will not fall out. Good quality at 1/2 price sale! January 31, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by This bookshelf is attractive and adequate for my needs. I had no problems setting it up. The top shelf is handy for parking things I am currently working with, and the two shelves below, in each copy, have enough space with enough overhead for all these books. October 6, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by bedroom special space purchase Came well packaged and in good shape. Just what I needed. January 26, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Swaying without a breeze Very disappointed in the quality. I have two others of this style that are quite old. They are so much sturdier and heavier. I thought the mantle would stabilize the swaying but it doesn't. I also tried tightening the screws. And the mantle doesn't fit snug no matter what I do. Also, the hole caps on the sides are too big for the holes so they really don't fit properly. I would never consider stacking 2 of these, it would be disaster! Pros: Nice honey color, no assembly required, portable, good size. A mantle is a nice addition. Very good customer service. Cons: flimsy, sways even when fully loaded with books, Mantle doesn't quite fit snug, Not a good value for the money, would never buy another or recommend February 4, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great folding bookcase I recently purchased this bookcase. I have others similar to it & love the fact it requires no assembly. It costs more than others I've purchased elsewhere but the quality is better. The stain color is true to the photo on the website. I recommend these bookcases to anyone needing additional storage who doesn't want to assemble the item. January 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ideal for my purposes, plus easy to set up or move. I needed some basic, sturdy, wood bookcases that would bring a little order to books and small baskets of other items I sell in my online shop, because it all resides in my main living area. These serve the purpose perfectly. The wood and finish are very decent (not high end, of course, because of the price, but they do have a nice appearance). The shelf space they provide is just right--neither too shallow (front to back) nor too deep. I also ordered the tops and am pleased with the added stability and extra surface for setting things. They're sturdy for my purposes (mostly books), but I wouldn't overload them with extremely heavy items (follow their advice here). These are a worthwhile purchase if your aims are at all similar. Note that two bookcases in their boxes just barely fit in my older Civic. Something to think about when deciding whether to pay for delivery if your car is any smaller. September 22, 2015
