Answer:
It is free-standing and quite heavy. Don't place tight up against the wall as it needs to have incoming air for the heater. The air is drawn from the back and needs perhaps a 1 inch gap to draw air efficiently.

So was I. Not many true white ones out there with the right look. Researched this, and found that white zinsser bullseye 123 primer, water based, should be the first coat. You can get it in a spray can for an easier application. Then follow with a min wax polycrylic clear satin finish, also water based, and it too comes in a spray can.

Hey Duff,
Since this is an antique white finish, you can still top coat paint it in a bright white if you wish.
The key is to first apply an oil-based primer that will successfully attach to it. Once the primer has dried, then you would apply a high sheen and high quality top coat in the white of your choice.

As I said in a previous comment. When you put this together have someone with you to put the fireplace on it's front and then tighten the left side of the fireplace together. I had a very difficult time getting it to line up.
After your frustrating attempt you will find that the fireplace is the best investment you ever made.
It's absolutely beautiful.

Something like an Edenpure heater.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Nice Fireplace I really thought this would be a chintzy product for under $300, but I was surprised to find it was a solid piece of furniture that is a wonderful addition to our basement game room. This unit comes with a top corner piece that can be added to fill in the majority of the space if you place the fireplace in the corner. It should be noted that the piece does not fully cover the corner space behind the fireplace. With our TV above it and the soundbar across the top, it hides the space nicely, but if you plan on it in the corner with nothing above it, you will see the space in the back. Having an outlet directly behind the unit would help hide the cord, but it is fine with us. This fireplace is heavy, the box is over 100lbs, I was able to tilt, drag, and scoot this unwieldy box out of my truck, inside and downstairs with my 9 year old boy's assistance. I would assume that most people will need help getting the box out of the car/truck and into their home. If you would like to add the look and a little heat from a fireplace, but not spend the $1000's on a direct vent, then this is a perfect choice. The color is a whitewash, not a gloss white, which was a surprise to me, but luckily fits in nicely with our tan based color scheme room. December 15, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by we love it !! we love it , we already knew it was not going to be white , it is a green ivory color ,we went to home depot got some decorations and add it to the fireplace, we added trim , we caulk it and sprayed it it and now it looks like we what we had in mind , it is a good size furniture and definitely heats up the rooms, we love the different lights settings , the assembly was simple , we did not have any problems , good materials for the $$$ November 26, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very pleased with my purchase. It was an easy project to put together, except for the part where I had to join the mantel to the base....I had to adjust by undoing the screws, & adjust until it fitted. Otherwise it was a breeze. July 1, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great style at a great price Absolutely love this fireplace. Easy to assemble - looks amazing, adds warmth and style. March 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love it! I absolutely love this fireplace!! It looks beautiful in my living room; I've been getting a ton of compliments. I love that it has a remote control that you can use to turn it on and off as well as control the temperature. It takes awhile to heat up the room but I have a decently large living room. The only issue we had was with Home Depot itself. We never received notice that it arrived at the store so we waited around for an extra 4 days to pick it up. We finally just went to the store to check on it and it was ready. Pretty frustrating but we haven't had any issues with the product itself. I highly recommend this fireplace! December 15, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice looking piece of furniture The fireplace was easy to assemble and looks great. The insert (heating unit) does not produce a whole lot of heat and the thermostat does not seem to work. I contacted Home Depot and they are arranging to send me another insert. Other than that, the flame looks good and has a variety of settings and colors. I am pleased with the purchase overall and would recommend it. The price was certainly right. February 3, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product! I always read the reviews before purchasing and the reviews for this fireplace were dead on. It was a great purchase for our living room. It's not the real thing, but close enough! It was easy to put together and very sturdy. You can use the flames without having to use the heat. The only thing is that it's more of a cream off white color than white. If you are looking for a true white then this one isn't for you. I prefer the cream color over the white anyway. Definitely recommend this! September 27, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by perfect addition to my glam boudoir! I planned to purchase this fireplace for my all white living room but after reading the reviews and learning that the frame is more ivory or off-white, I knew it would be a better match for my bedroom. We opted for the free delivery to my local Home Depot and picked up from there. The box is heavy and large, it will not fit in the back of a Camaro! It took my boyfriend about an hour to assemble it, directions pretty clear. I decided to use the corner attachment and replace the old TV Stand with this unit. I love it! The faux fire looks really nice, not at all fake or cheesy. The heater works well and the case/frame looks like I paid way more than $270! I saw the same exact model on other sites for more than $500! What a bargain! December 22, 2015
